A small mouse has set a new world record for the oldest known living mouse. The mouse, named Pat, is a Pacific pocket mouse. It is the smallest kind of mouse in North America. It is about four to six inches long and weighs about as much as three coins.
Mice generally live for about 12—18 months while Pacific pocket mice usually live for 3 to 5 years in the wild. Even when being cared for by humans, they don’t usually live much longer than 7.5 years. Pat, however, was 9 years and 209 days old.
The mice are an important part of the environment. They help spread the seeds (传播种子) of the plants that grow naturally in sandy areas. Their digging underground also helps the plants grow.
