(1) seldom 作副词，意为“不常；很少”，其反义词为often通常置于实义动词之前，助动词、系动词或情态动词之后。如：
She seldom goes out by herself.
她很少独自外出。
(2) seldom 具有否定意义，用于句首表示强调时，主谓要部分倒装。如：
Seldom do I go shopping by taxi, unless it’s raining.
除非下雨，我很少打车去购物。

influence既可用作动词也可用作名词，意为“影响”。

注意：此处的have不可换为give。如：

(1) absent adj. 意为“心不在焉的; 漫不经心的”，常用短语：
be absent from意为“缺席，离开”。如：

(2) absent其名词形式是：absence。
4. She advised them to talk with their son in person.

(1) advise 劝告；忠告；向……提供意见，给……出主意
advise sb. to do sth. 建议某人做某事。如：
I think I’d advise him to leave the company.
要是我，我会建议他离开这家公司。
(2) in person 亲自；亲身。如：
You have to sign for it in person.
你必须亲自签收。
5. “…, they are always thinking of me. They take pride in everything good that I do.”
(l) be always doing sth.意为“总是做某事，一直做某事” ，常表达说话人的某种情绪，如赞扬、不满、责备等。如：
He always asking his parents for money.
他总是向他的父母要钱。
(2) take pride in“为……感到自豪/骄傲，与be proud of 同义。如：
The young mother took pride in her son.
=The young mother was proud of her son.
这个年轻的妈妈为她的儿子感到自豪。
