I was born missing my left arm. In 1986, at 18 months, I was fitted with a prosthetic (义肢) device, I spent my entire childhood and adolescence trying to ease the pains of the stares and pointing fingers from my classmates. By the time I was 8, I had no self-confidence, and the hand I was wearing was making it harder for me to fit in. So I decided I was better off without one.
To prove that I wasn' t limited by my disability, I developed a love for all sports, in particular swimming. I was selected to my first Australian women' s swimming team at age 13 and successfully represented my country for eight years. I realized I' d made a name for myself because of my disability.
In 2021 I was first contacted by Covvi, a company trying to create the world' s most advanced bionic (仿生的) hand. They asked me to try the hand and, if possible, to become a patient advocate (代言人). At first, I said no. Then, curiosity got the better of me.
While I was busy advocating for disability rights, a new generation of leaders, like Amy Purdy and Nick Vujicic, used the power of technology and social media to display wheelchairs or prosthetic devices without explanation. People feared disability less. Society was beginning to see a person first, and their disability second.
As those conversations shifted, I realized that there was an opportunity to use technology to guide future generations. In July 2022, I decided to try the hand.
The role of patient advocate is a great honor. Through sharing my journey, I' m able to reach thousands of other people who would benefit from its extraordinary capabilities. That' s why I wear a bionic hand — not because I' m broken, but because I have an opportunity to improve the human capabilities that already exist.

The world' s most famous tire (轮胎) graveyard (坟地) of 42 million tires in the sands of Kuwait is finally being cleaned up and recycled. This news in itself would be a major relief to locals who have to suffer from the clouds of black smoke arising during fires. But the government isn' t stopping there. They are aiming to create a green city of 25, 000 homes in line with a post-oil Persian Gulf, with a focus on sustainability and tourism.
The first step is to clear the ground. The Salmiya area, nicknamed " Rubber (橡胶) Mountain" , is formed from hundreds of small mountains of spent tires — a reaction from the one million cars which were added to Kuwait' s roads over the decade.
EPSCO Global General Trading recycling company has opened a recycling plant for the tires, where they' ve been collected, sorted, cut up, and pressed into other materials like rubbery coloured flooring tiles (铺地砖). The plant opened in January of 2021, and can recycle up to 3 million tires a year. The recycled material is then exported out to nearby gulf neighbours and Asia. In the place of the tires will be South Saad Al-Abdullah City, a green city characterizing a new era in the Middle-Eastern country.
Spent tires are a major environmental problem worldwide due to the room they take up and the chemicals they can release.
" We have moved from a difficult stage that was characterized by great environmental risk, " says Oil Minister Mohammed al-Fares. " Today the area is becoming clean and all tires are being removed to begin the launch of the project of Saad Al-Abdullah city. "
Expected to cost ?3. 3 billion and require 30 years to complete, the city hopes to feature green technology, probably like the kind one can see in other cities on the Persian Gulf, both existing and not. New research suggests that a gene that governs the body's biological (circadian) clock acts differently in males versus females and may protect females from heart disease. The study is the first to analyse circadian blood pressure rhythms(节奏)in female mice.
The body's circadian clock-the biological clock that organizes bodily activities over a 24-hour period—contributes to normal variations in blood pressure and heart function over the course of the day. In most healthy humans, blood pressure dips(下降)at night. People who do not experience this temporary drop, called "non-dippers", are more likely to develop heart disease. The circadian clock is made up of four main proteins (encoded by "clock genes") that regulate close to half of all genes in the body, including those important for blood pressure regulation.
Previous research has shown that male mice that are missing one of the four clock genes (PER1) become non-dippers and have a higher risk for heart and kidney disease. A research team studied the circadian response and blood pressure of female mice that lack PERI and compared them with a healthy female control group. On both low-and high-salt diets, both groups "kept an apparent circadian rhythm" of blood pressure, the researchers explained. Unlike the male mice in previous research, the females without PERI showed normal dips in blood pressure overnight.
These results suggest that the lack of PER1 acts differently in males and females. The findings are consistent with research showing that women are less likely to be non-dippers than men of the same age. "This study represents an important step in understanding sex differences in the regulation of cardiovascular(心血管的)function by the circadian clock," the researchers wrote.

The body's circadian clock-the biological clock that organizes bodily activities over a 24-hour period—contributes to normal variations in blood pressure and heart function over the course of the day. A research team studied the circadian response and blood pressure of female mice that lack PERI and compared them with a healthy female control group. On both low-and high-salt diets, both groups "kept an apparent circadian rhythm" of blood pressure, the researchers explained. Unlike the male mice in previous research, the females without PERI showed normal dips in blood pressure overnight.
These results suggest that the lack of PER1 acts differently in males and females. The findings are consistent with research showing that women are less likely to be non-dippers than men of the same age.
