IV. 阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,计30分)
China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: the way people shop at markets.
People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a cabbage, two potatoes and 0. 25 kilogram of beef at a time.
However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Because buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual in the north. Also, you can buy a small amount (数量), such as a single apple or a pear each time in the south. Shop owners even help you peel and cut them. But shop owners in the north hardly offer such service. And a lot of fruit is sold in baskets and boxes.
The difference could be due to the different weather. Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or the food may go bad.

This is the first year I haven’t had to think about what to buy my mom for Mother’s Day.
She passed away from lung cancer just under two months ago at the age of 68, which by today’s standards feels so young.
I thought we had many Mother’s Days in our future to celebrate together. And so I’ve avoided thinking about Mother’s Day for the most part. I haven’t thought about what kind of clothes my mom would like best. I have been avoiding Facebook memories as the day comes.
But the other day I did click into the memories section on Facebook and found a story I told about my mom.
I shared the story because that day my mom had come home from working at a factory to watch my kids so I could catch up on housework.
She had worked in a factory—hard, physical work for a woman in her 60s—and started work at 4 am most days. Here she was, most likely far more tired than me, caring for my kids.
I wanted to say sorry for needing her help so much, and thanked her for once again giving up her free time—helping me after finishing working for the whole day.
Mom, I miss you, and you will always be my good mother.

Pickleball
On a summer day in 1965, Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell Found themselves in a pickle. They had returned from a pleasant golf game to a houseful of bored kids. Pritchard wanted the kids to go out and play. Gathering several things, he and Bill took the kids to a badminton court. There they used ping-pong paddles to hit a ball with holes over a net.
The next week, their friend Barney McCallum joined the game and helped make rules for it. After summer vacation, McCallum continued playing the game that they had created. Out of curiosity, neighbors came over to watch and give it a try. The crazy game came to be known as “pickleball.”
At first pickleball was played primarily in the Seattle area. But nearly three decades later, it was being played in all 50 U. S. states. Today pickleball is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. The three dads who invented pickleball never imagined it would gain international recognition.
The unique game is so popular because it’s easy to learn. Pickleball has been called a cross between Ping-Pong and tennis. Some people describe it as “a smaller version of tennis, but a bigger version of Ping-Pong.” There’s not as much running as there is in tennis. Players don’t have to be good at playing, either. This fact alone makes it an easy sport for children and seniors. But players of any size and age can easily master the game, making it fun for everyone.
Another plus is that pickleball can be played inside or outside. Also, a lot of space isn’t necessary. The games don’t last long. Someone wins when they reach 11 point s with a 2-point lead.

Dear Laura,
I’m glad to hear from you. Now I will tell you something about Spring Festival.
It usually comes in February, but sometimes it comes in January. Before Spring Festival, we need to clean our house and sweep away bad luck. We always buy lots of food. We celebrate Spring Festival with a traditional family dinner. After dinner, we usually watch a special program on TV. On the first day of the new year, we usually wear new clothes to visit the old people. We always get a hongbao. It means lucky money.
The Spring Festival can not only make us feel love and happiness, but also show the importance of home and family.
