Growing up, I was often the first Jewish person my classmates had ever met.I lived in Mississauga, Ontario, and was the only Jewish student in my grade一sometimes the only one in the whole school. This difference set me apart.
Every September, I hated presenting the note my parents had expertly made to a teacher I was just getting to know. The note explained that I would be absent during the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.I flatted that my teachers would label me the “Jewish kid”.
The real trouble always came as the local new year’s festival approached.I was Jewish and celebrated Hanukkah, not this festival. At school, on one day before the winter break, every class would sit in neat rows in the gym and sing songs from the festival. However, the music teacher sometimes played Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel, a Jewish festival song, and I would feel hundreds of eyes staring at my red cheeks. As my friends counted down the days until the festival, I counted the days until it was over and I could go back to feeling normal.
Each year during primary school, my mother would coordinate(协调) with my teacher to come to my class and tell the story of Hanukkah. She would prepare treats and materials depending on my age.Every time I would proudly stand beside her as she told the story of Hanukkah and explained the symbols. The children who had attended the presentation previously competed to answer questions. After my mom left, I would overhear them showing off their fried treats to kids in other classes.
My mom’s annual visits to my school sparked interest from other parents as well.Over the years, we had visits from parents who shared how festivals were celebrated in Germany and Italy.
My mom showed me, my classmates and their families that what sets us apart should be celebrated and shared, an intention which I continue to set for myself as I cycle through another holiday season.
4.What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Noticed. B.Disagreed. C.Worried. D.Expected.
5.How did the author’s classmates react to Mom’s coming
A.They welcomed it warmly. B.They gave away her treats.
C.They showed off themselves. D.They expressed sympathy for her.
6.Which of the following best states what Mom did at school
A.She protected her child from being hurt.
B.She encouraged cross-cultural understanding.
C.She made Hanukkah a school-celebrated festival.
D.She saved the Jewish tradition from being changed.

Loss aversion(厌恶), the idea that losses are more psychologically influential than gains, is widely considered the most important idea of behavioral decision-making and its sister field of behavioral economics. To illustrate the significance attached to loss aversion, Kahneman, winner of Nobel Prize in economics, wrote in his book, Thinking Fast and Slow, that “the concept of loss avers ion is certainly the greatest contribution of psychology to behavioral economics.”
Why has such profound importance been attributed to loss aversion Largely because it is thought to reflect a fundamental truth about human beings—that we are more motivated by our fears than by our aspirations. This conclusion has implications for almost every aspect of how we live our lives.
However, as documented in a recent critical review of loss aversion by Rucker of Northwestem University, there is no general cognitive(认知的) prejudice that leads people to avoid losses more strongly than to pursue gains.Contrary to claims based on loss aversion, price increases do not affect consumer behavior more than price decreases.
If losing $10,000 means giving up the roof over your head whereas gaining $10,000 means going on an extra vacation, it is perfectly reasonable to be more concerned with the loss than the gain.
Why has belief in loss avers ion been held so strong for so long An idealized view of science is that theories are accepted or rejected based solely on evidence from experiments. In fact, science is not simply an impersonal search for truth, but also a social process, in which supporters of a theory must convince other scientists, through logic and argumentation, of how evidence should be interpreted.
In sum, our critical review of loss aversion highlights that, even in contemporary times, wrong ideas can continue to exist for a long time despite contrary evidence, and therefore, that there is a need to critically assess accepted beliefs. While loss aversion has frequently been used to explain why people are prejudiced toward the current situation, perhaps fittingly, the case of loss aversion illustrates the importance of challenging the present state of science.
7.Why did Daniel Kahneman write Thinking Fast and Slow
A.To record the process of our thinking.
B.To test the contribution of loss aversion.
C.To show loss aversion is viewed important.
D.To figure out how loss aversion comes about.
8.Which situation worried people most according to Kahneman
A.Rising price. B.An extra holiday. C.Decreasing price. D.Pursuing gains.
9.What does the author think of science
A.It is solely based on experiments.
B.It bears little relation to evidence.
C.It interprets logic and argumentation.
D.Its research process is objective and social.
10.What can be a suitable title for this passage
A.Why Is An Important Idea False
B.How Can Loss Aversion Be Defined
C.Is An Accepted Idea Really Objective
D.Can We Take Loss Aversion for Granted

My Favourite Character
As part of the school reading festival, I would like to share with you my favourite character. from the classic story, The Million Pound Bank Note.Written by Mark Twain, the story features Henry Adams, a penniless American man, whose life totally changed after receiving a million-pound bank note from two wealthy brothers.
Among the various characters in the story, my favorite character is Henry Adams, whose outstanding qualities leave a deep impression on me.Such an honest man is he that he would rather earn a living by working hard instead of receiving a charity from the two brothers.Besides, he inspires me with his integrity and compassion, who refuses to take advantage of his newfound wealth but instead uses it to help others in need. What moves me most is his optimistic attitude to life.Faced with numerous challenges and difficulties, he always stays positive, tackling problems with determination and perseverance.
It is Henry’s noble personality that motivates me to pursue my dream positively even in face of the most difficult circumstances. His commitment to doing what is right inspires me to stick to the values I cherish and become a better person.
