In Hubei, there is a small mountain village called Dongxi. Zhu Xiangbing arrived in this village forty years ago to teach children.

Huazhou shadow puppetry (皮影) is a folk (民俗的) art in Weinan, Shanxi. It’s around for over is 2. 000 years. The artists there are working hard to make it even better and more popular.
At the age of 14, Xue Hongquan began to learn shadow puppetry. Now, he makes the puppets bigger and move more like people. He also uses new art styles (样式) together with the old ones.
In 2015, Xue made a group, and the people in this group were young. Together, they made it more than 10 new shadow puppetry plays. Most of them were popular with the people. In 2023, they made a play about Ne Zha. This made shadow puppets, cartoons, and movies together. It was a big success (成功).
Xue thinks it’s important to keep the old art alive (有生气的) . He did a lot of things to make it come true. At last, Huazhou was given the name of “the hometown of Chinese folk culture and art” in 2021.
People there are also working hard to protect Huazhou shadow puppetry. Shanxi Province teaches people how to do shadow puppetry and Huazhou often puts on shows in the forest park. Many people come to watch the shows.
