One night, our house burned down. As a single mother with four kids, she cried bitterly. We had to move into the Ramada Inn, where my mother worked. This was the room where putting one foot in front of the next felt impossible. After four months of not having any of our own air to breathe, we were on the edge of just giving up.
One day Mother stood up, looking crazy. “Let's go for a ride, ” we looked at one another cautiously, not sure if we had heard right. “Come on,” she urged. “It'll be fun. ” We didn't have fun in our family. Fun. was something we might have known about once, which, however, seemed foreign to us now. Still, we piled into our 1972 blue Ford Torino, a blue so faded as to appear almost white. Mother started the car, saying “I thought we'd go to look at all the houses we've lived in.”
Embarking on rides that night was my first. Gradually, going for a ride in my mother's car became a regular thing. Every night we piled into the car and the world changed. We even sang “You Are My Sunshine” and a million other songs. The hope we seemed to have lost in the rest of our life was real again in the car as we sang. One night as we were singing loudly, “In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines and you shiver when the cold wind blows . . . ” Mother suddenly stopped the car. “This is it! ” she cried.
“This” was a house, and a for-rent sign in the front yard brought me more joy than I could believe. “Really ” I asked in a low voice. My mother was excited and we all went to look. We might have a house again. That night, I realized my mother was like us. The following weekend, we moved in. The nights in the car were over. Better off, we had new jobs and activities now. As evening fell, five people moved nervously around a baby elephant. All the science, all the ideas leading up to this moment, checked out. But now, it was a question of practice: Would this baby elephant like the newly developed baby formula (配方) Would her body react well to it
The five people, keepers at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, northern Kenya's only elephant orphanage (孤儿院) , held one another's hands. They hoped that she would be healthy. As baby Sera gulped (吞咽) down one bottle after another, they smiled with relief. And in the days that followed, the weak two-week-old put on weight and had the strength to play with the other baby elephants at the orphanage.
The keepers celebrated the breakthrough. The formula was simple and the main ingredient (成分)of the new formula was easy to get: goat milk.
The team had been thinking about how to improve their milk recipe for a long time, says Katie Rowe, co-founder of Reteti, in the community-owned Namunyak Conservancy. The orphanage had used human baby formula since its establishment in 2016, but costs were high, cans had to be bought from foreign countries, and ingredients weren't always natural. “I was looking at the ingredients, believing there were better choices out there, ” Rowe says.
The new formula has also been a success for the Samburu community, which sells goat milk to the orphanage. Each morning, Stamen Lemajong's family and others travel along tree-lined roads to sell more than 150 liters of milk to the orphanage. “We use the money from selling goat milk for everything the kids to school, paying hospital bills, ” Lemajong says. “And in times of hardship last year, it has been a huge help. Who would have thought a teenager's mobile phone could help them manage their men tall health by supporting a good night's sleep A new app aimed at 12-to 16-year-olds is showing strong early results, improving both the hours of sleep and reducing depression and anxiety.
Sleep Ninja, a free app created by a mental health research organization—the Black Dog Institute, has shown significant early results in improving teenagers' sleep patterns (模式) , so critical not just for school readiness but for overall good mental health, co-creator Aliza Werner-Seidler said.
“Adolescents (青少年) struggle to get the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night,” Dr Werner-Seidler, a clinical psychologist, said. “As a result, approximately 40 per cent of all young people will experience a significant sleep problem by early high school which heightens their risk of mental ill-health, which is a risk factor for a range of disorders including depression and anxiety.”
Those using the app nominate (指定) a time to be up in the morning to make it to school or other activities. From there, it work backwards, determining when they should be in bed. The app gives an alert to start a pre-bed routine, which launches at least an hour before bed time. Part of that routine is to put the phone and other devices away, and engage in behaviors more suitable to sleep. Some of this is simply to have a shower, clean teeth, read a book. But the app also offers a form of practical tips to help them establish sleep routines, things like how to set up their bedroom, what to do during the day to improve their chances of sleep and how to reduce those negative repetitive thoughts that come in at night.
Dr Werner-Seidler said Sleep Ninja was the only such app designed specifically for adolescents, and the results so far had been very encouraging. She added that we also saw rates of depression drop from 77 percent at the start of the study to 44 percent after using the app.
32. What do we know about Sleep Ninja
A. It aims to improve adults' mental health. B. It's a new mobile phone for teenagers.
C. It is invented by 12-to 16-year-olds. D. It's a free app designed by Black Dog Institute.
33. What does the third paragraph focus on
A. The creating process of Sleep Ninja. B. The heavy burden of schooling.
C. The practical need for Sleep Ninja. D. The cost of making Sleep Ninja.
34. How can Sleep Ninja work on teenagers
A. By reducing negative repetitive thoughts. B. By setting an alert in the morning.
C. By putting digital devices away. D. By helping form good sleep routines.
35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Education Report. B. Society Report.

What do you do when you receive an invitation to an event that you do not want to attend or that you cannot attend due to your busy schedule In that case, we simply can't act on everything our heart feels. 36 Here are some right ways to decline (拒绝) an invitation without hurting others' feelings.
Respond in a timely manner.
37 It's OK to put off responding if you're unsure at first, but give yourself a deadline to figure it out —and stick to it. Always respond to invitations in a timely manner.
38 .
It's OK to say you're sorry that you can't make an event, but it's better to redefine it as a positive. Rather than apologizing, say how happy you are that they invited you and that while you can't make it this time, you look forward to getting together with them in the future.
Don't say “maybe”.
Procrastinating (拖延) by saying “maybe” usually means it's a no. 39 Saying “maybe” is a way of making yourself feel better, but it leaves the other person hanging, which is unkind.
Don't try to control the other person's feelings.
There's the assumption that we can decline without hurting anyone else's feelings, but we can't ensure the other person's experience. They may feel sad or disappointed when you decline, but that's OK. 40
A. Focus on the positive.
B. Be honest but not too honest.
C. Don't leave the hoot hanging.
D. It's fine to decline via digital means.
E. Most people will understand that life just gets busy.
F. If that's really what you mean, just go ahead and say no.

The poor children who attended our church-supported Christmas party feasted on Christmas foods, enjoyed wonderful shows and received various gifts from Santa. When all the children had gone, we breathed a sigh of relief with tiredness.
Pointing to the extra gifts left in Santa's black bag, Jean asked, “What are we going to do with all these toys ”As we were lost in reflection, Bobbie said, “Remember the three sisters who were at the party Why don't we deliver the toys to their house on Monday while they are in school to give them a surprise ” Everyone agreed. Since I lived closest to the three little girls, I volunteered to deliver the gifts.
On Monday, I drove to their home, confident their mother would be there. As I got out of my car a small dog appeared. He barked (吠叫) loudly and followed dangerously close to me as I hurried to the front door. With one large bag of toys, I knocked on the door. No one answered. I knocked repeatedly for several minutes. Still no answer.
Disappointed, I said, “Okay, now what am I supposed to do I can't carry these presents around all day! ”
Managing to stay a few steps ahead of the barking dog. I returned to my car. After I calmed down I remembered hearing one lady at the church mention some needy children, who didn't attended the party, had no toys. They lived in a wooden house not far from where I sat.
As I approached that location, I saw three shabby (破损的) wooden houses side by side. “Oh, no,” I whispered. “How am I supposed to know which house is the right one ” I pulled into the large dirt yard shared by all three families. As I got out of the car, I thought to myself, “Well, I’ll try the middle one first.” I knocked on the door. As I prepared to knock again, the door opened halfway.

参考范文:
Dear friends,
In order to raise students' awareness of protecting the environment, I'm writing to call on everyone to take part in “building a greener campus”.
As we all know, climate change and pollution have seriously affected our life. Therefore, everyone of us should take the responsibility of protecting the environment. To start with, saving energy is protecting the environment. Turning off taps and lights immediately is the first step. What's more, waste sorting is of great significance to protecting the environment. Last but not least, the key to protecting the environment is to plant trees. This is because trees can absorb carbon dioxide, helping reduce the greenhouse effect.
Only by protecting the environment in our daily life, will our planet have a bright future.
With best wishes,
Li Hua
续写参考范文:
A tired-looking young woman with reddened eyes stood in the doorway. She stared cautiously at me and asked who I was looking for. I explained my intention and was invited inside. With faint light from the teetering light bulb, I could tell what a poor life the family was living. Beside an old wooden bed were two little children, who were both smiling at me, curious and amazed. I questioned if there were the other two houses alongside where two children who didn't attend the party lived. The woman nodded in silence.
Knowing that this was just the house I wanted, I was secretly relieved. Finally the toys would go to some children who they belonged to. The children's faces lit up with joy when they knew they would get their first toys for Christmas. The woman forced a smile and I could notice her discomfort and shyness. Though she appeared calming, the gentle shaking of her shoulders gave her away. I could hear the cry of her heart. I distributed all the toys at last. That day meant a lot to me. For me, it was nothing but a task, while for her, it was more than a goodwill gesture, which brought warmth to the whole family.
