人与社会——历史、社会与文化
Podareva, 29, was born in Russia. She has loved poetry(诗歌)
since her childhood. Growing up, she wrote many poems in both Russian
and English. After she came to China to study Chinese in 2013, the world of
Chinese poetry opened up before her.

Podareva has had colorful experiences in China in the past ten years. She
has won prizes in many Chinese poetry writing competitions and published
her own Chinese poetry collections. Her most unforgettable memory is that
one of her Chinese poems written in 2020 was turned into a song.
“Some people may praise China in a direct way, but I prefer to
express my feelings about the country and describe the friendship between
China and Russia through different styles of poems,” Podareva says.

Podareva has always wanted to be a cultural ambassador(使者)
between the two countries. In 2020, she began to make videos and shared
them online. Besides sharing Chinese poems, Podareva also produced
videos about cultural differences between China and Russia. Sometimes she
made humorous videos to explain the misunderstandings that Chinese people
have about Russians.

Besides writing poetry, Podareva has also been painting. She doesn’t
think the two art forms are different from each other. “Wang Wei was a
famous Chinese poet, and he was also a painter,” she says. In December
2022, Podareva held an exhibition in Shanghai.
Podareva says, “I hope to create a website in Russia and introduce
China through my poetry and paintings to Russians, so that the friendship

人与社会——历史、社会与文化
The main difference between China and Western countries on the dinner
table is the tableware(餐具), but that’s just a small difference.
The real difference is whether people share food on the same plate. In
the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are
placed in the middle of the table and everyone shares. In China, the meal
usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, followed by hot meat
and vegetable dishes.

Perhaps what surprises Western visitors most is that Chinese hosts like to
put food into the plates of their guests. This is a sign of politeness. It is
always polite to eat the food.
People in China tend to order more food than they could eat. They will
think it embarrassing if all the food is eaten.

1. What’s the real difference between Chinese and Western table manners?

2. What may make Western guests feel surprised when they have dinner in a
Chinese family?

3. Where are the dishes placed in China?

Whether/If people share food on the same plate.
The Chinese hosts put food into the plates of their guests.
In the middle of the table.

根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
4. How many cold dishes does the meal usually begin with at least in China?

5. Why do people in China tend to order more food than they could eat?

Four/4.
Because they will think it embarrassing if all the food is eaten.

六、 阅读理解。
人与社会——历史、社会与文化
A lot of etiquette(礼节) considerations happen when we dine in
China. There are some special differences in table manners from Western
countries.

A round dining table is more popular than a square(四方形的) one.
As many people can be seated comfortably around it and conveniently face
one another. The guest of honor is always seated to the right of the host; the
next in line will sit on his left. Guests should be seated after the host’s
invitation, and it is impolite to seat guests at the place where the dishes are
served.
Dining may only begin once the host and all his guests are seated. The
host should actively take care of all his guests, inviting them to enjoy their
meal.
On a typical Chinese dining table there is always a cup, a bowl on a
small dish, together with the chopsticks and spoons. Dishes are always
presented in the center of the table.

Apart from soup, all dishes should be eaten with chopsticks. The
Chinese are particular about the use of chopsticks. There are many no-no’s
such as twiddling(玩弄) with chopsticks, using them to stir(搅拌) up
the food, gesturing with them or pointing them at others. Never stick
chopsticks in the center of rice, as this is the way to sacrifice(供奉) and
is therefore considered to be unlucky. Use public chopsticks in some special
dishes.
Keep your dining pace in accord with other people. Never smoke when
dining.

Formal dining is always accompanied by tea, beer or distilled spirits
(白酒). The one who sits closest to the teapot or wine bottle should pour
them for others from the senior to the junior. And when other people fill your
cup or glass, you should express your thanks. Guests cannot pour tea or
wine themselves.

1. The round table is preferred because it is convenient to serve the
dishes. F
2. The guest of honor is always seated to the right of the host. T
3. All dishes should be eaten with chopsticks in China. F
4. It’s right to use public chopsticks for some special dishes. T

your thanks.

人与社会——历史、社会与文化
China covers a large area and has a great population. Different living
habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently,
another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese has
become a hot one: the way people shop at markets.
People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for
just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage
or two potatoes at a time.

However, one may be laughed at if he or she does this in the north.
Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual. Also,
you can buy a small amount of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each
time in the south. Shop owners even help you peel and cut the fruit. But shop
owners in the north hardly offer such service. And many fruits are sold in
baskets or boxes. The difference could be due to the different weather.

Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and
dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing food. But the hot
and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food
for one meal or one day, or the food may go bad.
