Benjamin Alexander, a 38-year-old from Northampton shire, will become the first athlete to represent Jamaica in an al pine skiing event at the Winter Olympics.
Alexander is the child of a Jamaican father and an English mother. “My mother, my father and my brother all have spent the most part of their working career either in factories or driving,” he said. “None of the three of them finished high school with any decent GCSEs or O-levels.” Alexander, however, was acknowledged as a gifted child and earned a scholarship to a private school before studying physics and then engineering at Imperial College London. I never hired the services of a manager or agent as a DJ because I wanted to do it my own way.”
Alexander will become the 15th athlete ever to compete for Jamaica at a Winter Olympics. “You’re going to have the determination to suffer and to struggle, but also to have both pride and power,” is Stokes’s advice to the former DJ. “That’s the attitude you’ll need.”

If you tend to trip or lose balance, then researchers in Japan may have an unusual solution: a robotic tail. A team at Keio University in Tokyo has designed a wearable human tail, which is fastened using a support system and may help the wearer correct their balance the same way animals do.
The thick meter-long tail, attached to the wearer’s waist, looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. Covered in vertebrae-like(椎骨状)plates, it swings and twists like a real tail. The tail contains sensors and four artificial “muscles”, which allow it to move in response to the wearer’s movements. For example, if you lean left, the tail swings right. If you lean down, the tail swings upward. This counter-movement provides enough force to change the body’s momentum(冲力)and center of gravity, helping to correct balance and give wearers greater stability.
The project, called Arque, is led by Yamen Saraiji, Junichi Nabeshima and Kouta Minamizawa. The researchers came up with the idea last summer. “We were interested in asking, ‘how can we empower the human body with wearable technologies ’” Saraiji told CNN in a phone interview. At first, the researchers experimented with prototypes(原型)based on cat and tiger tails, though both proved too light to affect the body’s balance. So they switched their focus to seahorse’s tails because they’re larger and heavier, giving the necessary amount of force and momentum.
Beyond people with balance and muscle disorders, the tail could also be used to help steady elderly users, or to provide extra support for jobs that require lifting heavy objects, Saraiji said. Saraiji emphasized that the tail is still in the research and development phase, and won’t be available anytime soon. Researchers hope to add more artificial muscles so the tail responds quicker to users’ movements. They are investigating the potential side-effects of long-term use.
32. Why do the researchers develop the robotic tails
A. To make a sci-fi movie.
B. To build up people’s health.
C. To keep people’s balance.
D. To enhance people’s appearance.
33. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A. How the tail responds. B. What the tail contains.
C. What the tail looks like. D. How the tail works.
34. What did researchers take into consideration when designing prototypes
A. Length. B. Weight.
C. Cost. D. Width.
35. Which can be the best title for the passage
A. The effects of losing balance.
B. The side-effects of a robotic tail.
C. A new way of keeping balance.
D. Different types of wearable technologies.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起)great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warned me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden ” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.” “Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
