A Famous Figure in Chinese History
The river of history keeps flowing, leaving the giants shining like diamonds. Among all the
famous figures in Chinese history, the one that attracts me most is Su Shi.
Su Shi, also known as Su Dongpo, is a writer, poet, and politician in Song Dynasty. Born to a
family with an extreme talent in literature, he wrote thousands of delicate poems, and even started
a new genre. However, his political career wasn’t smooth, and kept wandering farther and farther
in his later part of life. Nonetheless, whatever hardship he was faced with, he managed to
overcome it, leaving us with the legendary pieces.
In my childhood, he showed me the beauty of poems, and enhanced my interest in literature.
But as time goes, I start to realize that his influence on me is beyond literature. In the face of
frustrations, he never compromised. Instead, he always kept his cool and optimistic attitude. I shall
never lower my head, and will shout in the rain, just like him.
第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
One possible version:
Hannah was confused by this reaction and a little hurt too, but she did not give up on
her books. The next day, she quickly ate her breakfast and made her way to the cottage
again. When reading the books, Hannah found they were too interesting filled with stories about
different creatures. Each page was just an adventure waiting to be embarked on. Hannah’s
imagination took her to a world of talking animals, mystical creatures, and daring nights. The little
girl was so inspired by the books that the characters and the stories within them became her
mentor. She learned the power of love and friendship, and that the true strength lies within one’s
own heart!
With the good in heart, she decided to share the tales with the people of her village. She
wanted to light the sparks of curiosity and imagination in her villagers. Making this her mission,
Hannah started telling tales every day at her cottage. She added her own touch of curiosity every
now and then to different stories, making them more interesting. More and more people would
gather around Hannah in awe as she told her stories. The old cottage was no longer withering

away as people from her own village helped her build the cottage again. They transformed it
together into a paradise of adventures and imagination. Hannah reminded everyone through her
tales of the importance of human connection, empathy, and love.

Going through life can be very challenging at times, when we were young no one told us how hard it will be in the future but here we are. One of the gigantic problems of adult life is having self-doubt, and it is nasty and can kill your confidence levels if not controlled from the get-go. We will all experience some traces of self-doubt, which is natural. It happens to us during normal days or whenever we are going to start a new job, a new task, a new relationship, or anything new in life will make you self-doubt.
There are some people out there that mistake self-doubt for something else. Self-doubt is when you are unsure about one or more aspects of yourself. For example, when starting a new job, you might feel inexperienced or might think that you are not fit enough for the job---this is a prime example of self-doubt.
Self-doubt isn't all that bad. Let us tell you why! Low-level of self-criticism is actually good for you, which motivates you and pushes you to be better in life, to become greater than yesterday. This type of feeling will push you to work harder and faster than before and will also increase your productivity, but it should be a low level of self-criticism, and you don't want to punish yourself over things that are beyond your control.
In plain and simple terms, self-doubt is the inability to have confidence in your own skills and capabilities. It is a venomous mindset that limits you from achieving your true potential, Humility is one of the best traits that you can possess but if it comes at your own expense, then there is no use in having that kind of trait. Anything that proves harmful to your mental or physical health, is something that you shouldn't possess in the first place.
Self-Doubt isn't something that you are born with, which is developed as you pass the different stages of life. There are many ways a person can develop self-doubt. The best approach that we can take is to eliminate any kind of self-doubt we have, but before that can happen, it is necessary that we understand the very cause of self-doubt.
24. According to the passage, people in the following situation can experience self-doubt except
A. John working in a new environment.
B. Sophia who starts a relationship with her boyfriend lately.
C. Lucy being called on in English class to answer questions.
D. A girl taking the plane for the first time.
25. What can we infer from the text
A. Only adults can have self-doubt.
B. Self-doubt is nothing but a natural phenomenon.
C. Humility is one of the best traits that you should possess at all times.
D. All levels of self-criticism can increase our productivity.
26. What's the purpose of using the prime example of self-doubt in paragraph2
A. To further explain when people experience self-doubt.
B. To find out what people do when going through self-doubt.
C. To study why people have self-doubt.
D. To test if self-doubt would disappear in a new environment.
27. What will the writer possibly write in the following paragraph
A. Possible reasons of self-doubt. B. Elimination of self-doubt.
C. Different types of self-doubt. D. New definition of self-doubt.
C
The ocean covers more than 70% of Earth's surface, yet around 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. To put it simply, we know very little about most of the ocean. Seafloor mapping is the first step to uncovering the mysteries of the deep. Sea floor maps increase the scope, efficiency, and pace of deep-sea exploration, keeping scientists and boats from “flying blind.”
A vital part of exploring the seafloor is mapping the density of the ocean crust. But probing the ocean's crust requires a significant wave source. The most common method for determining crustal structure is also controversial — firing seismic air guns from ships. While this method is effective, it is potentially harmful to marine life and not easy to use.
The song of the fi n whale is one of the loudest in the animal kingdom, and is detectable over great distances. Their low-frequency calls generate more than 185 decibels(分贝) underwater, on par with a large ship. Part of the energy of this powerful song transmits into the ground as a seismic wave. The wave travels through the oceanic crust where it reflects and refracts off layers in the crustal interface. Ocean-bottom seismometers(地震计) off the coast of Oregon picked up on the seismic waves of these fin whale calls. Researchers Kun a and John Nábelek, from Oregon State University, analyzed six whale songs. Using these signals, the team was able to map the thickness of sediment and rock on the ocean floor.
While fi n whale songs are never going to replace seismic air guns entirely, they do provide a free and natural alternative for scientists looking to explore the ocean floor. In the future, scientists think broader-frequency vocalizations, like those of sperm whales, may produce higher-resolution imaging.
The researchers write, "our study demonstrates that animal vocalizations are useful not only for studying the animals themselves but also for investigating the environment that they inhabit.”
28. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1
A. Sea floor maps helps scientists and boats fly further in the air.
B. Sea floor maps guides scientists and boats to sail with clear direction in the sea.
C. Sea floor maps equips scientists and boats to sail with a fi rm destination in the ocean.
D. Sea floor maps keeps scientist sand boats from flying blindly.
29. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Around 80% of the earth's surface remains unexplored.
B. Fin whale songs are going to replace seismic air guns entirely.
C. Our study benefits the animal's living environment.
D. Their low-frequency calls of the fi n whale is louder than that of a large ship.
30. Which of the following best describes the most common method for determining crustal structure
A. Effective but controversial. B. Inefficient and costly.
C. Harmful but fruitful. D. Ineffective and harmful.
31. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To arouse the readers' awareness of wildlife protection.
B. To share the latest development of the seafloor mapping.
C. To inform us an alternative way to replace the original method of measuring the ocean floor.
D. To emphasize the importance of whales to ecosystem.

When both planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the airline announced which planes were involved in this horrid event. MacFarlane then realized that he was supposed to be in the second plane.
Family Guy and American Dad isn't Seth MacFarlane's first rodeo with animation. He showed a unique kind of love and passion for animation from a very young age. He actually submitted one of his drawings to a local newspaper. He was so talented that the newspaper company was impressed by his skills. The company hired him and he used to draw for them once a week for$5.
Seth MacFarlane currently stars in The Orville, a comedy sci-fi series that he himself wrote and created. He stars as the captain of the infamous space ship whereas his ex-wife in the show is the first officer. The Orville is something that Seth wanted to create since childhood. Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a small village. The village thrived in the heart of a big jungle. Surrounded by the mountain s and in the shade of green trees, the villagers happily lived a life of bliss. All of them were used to their robotic daily tasks and none of them had the imagination or the will to try something new, except for one girl named Hannah. Very few people in the village could read let alone write, and Hannah was one of them.
Hannah was an adventurous spirit with an imagination far beyond her time. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the woods looking for new things. She loved to create stories in her head and used to imagine herself as one of her characters.
One afternoon, when Hannah was on one of her adventurous quests, she came upon an abandoned cottage. The cottage looked very old in its condition. The door was barely hanging and the wood was chipping away. Even though Hannah's mother had strictly warned her not to go wandering in abandoned places, her curiosity got the best of her.
She tip-toed slowly to the door and slowly opened it and she was left stunned. In front of Hannah was a room full of books! Books glistering in the dust, basking in the warm sunlight just waiting to be explored. Hannah's excitement was visible on her face as she jumped up and down with glee!
She dusted the books, the shelves, and what was left of the furniture. Hannah broomed, swept, and dusted all day long until she realized that it was dark and she had to go back to her home. She met her friends on the way home who were curious by what Hannah was carrying. With excitement, Hannah shared everything with her friends. She was thinking that her friends will share her excitement but instead, she heard roars of laughter!
