Best outdoor theatres to enjoy this summer
With the seasons changing, now is the wonderful time to start planning summer experiences at outdoor theatres in parks, city squares, woodlands and even the side of a cliff!

Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre; seeing anything at all, back dropped by the blue Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. If you want a show particularly fitting for this unique surroundings, check out The Pirates of Penzance playing in July.

On Oct. 9, the economist Claudia Goldin was doing what most people do at 5 am: sleeping. But then the phone rang, and her life changed. That day, she became the third woman ever to win the Nobel prize in economics—and the first woman to win it on her own.
Goldin, 77, has dedicated herself to studying women and work. Over the course of her career, she has published foundational research on the ways women balance career with family and the gender wage gap. All of this has made her the world’s leading expert on how the workforce has changed women’s life and how women’s participation has changed the workforce.
Goldin’s work started with an observation on who was being left out of the conversation about families and labor. “We would talk about the children and the male head of the household. We would talk about single women who were working or widowed,” she says. “But we hardly talked about the married woman—the wife, the mother—and I realized that her story was unfolding through the 20th century, and it was a story that dug deep into the history.”
For all of her achievements in economics, Goldin confesses that when she was growing up in the 1950s, she didn’t picture herself in the field—in fact, she says, “I don’t think I knew what an economist was.” It was science that drew her in—specifically the experience of observing bacteria through a microscope in high school. But, once she arrived at Cornell University, Goldin did what she now encourages her undergraduate students to do: experiment, try new things, see what resonates.
“I don’t give advice,” she says, “but the one thing I do tell my female friends—because most of them have spent an enormous amount of time on families—is that never dim (使变暗) your light.”
( )24.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.Women’s dilemma at work. B.The achievements of Goldin.
C.Goldin’s living conditions. D.The current status of workforce.
( )25.What inspired Goldin to focus on women and work
A.Her sympathy for single women. B.Her personal misfortune in family.
C.Social discrimination against women. D.People’s ignorance of married women.
( )26.What quality does Goldin value in her students
A.Innovation. B.Talent. C.Imagination. D.Passion.
( )27.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.A Life-changing Phone Call. B.A Pioneer in Women’s Career.
C.Goldin, Centering Women at Work. D.Goldin, Dedicating Herself to Work.

A flexible film (薄膜) with tiny sensors could make surgery safer for patients with brain diseases.
The experimental film, which looks like Saran wrap (保鲜膜), rests on the brain’s surface and detects the electrical activity of nerve cells below. It’s designed to help surgeons remove diseased tissue while preserving important functions like language and memory. “This will enable us to do a better job,” says Dr. Ahmed Raslan, a neurosurgeon at Oregon Health and Science University who helped develop the film.
During an operation, surgeons place a grid of sensors on the surface of an awake patient’s brain, taking care not to tear the delicate film. Then they ask the patient to do tasks, like counting or moving a finger. Some of the tasks may be specific to a particular patient. “If somebody is a mathematician, we’ll give them a math formula; if somebody is a painter, we’ll give them what’s called a visual cognition task.” says Raslan.
The technology is similar in concept to sensor g rids already used in brain surgery. But the resolution is 100 times higher. Imagine that you’re looking on a clear night at the moon, then imagine looking through a telescope. In addition to aiding surgery, the film should offer researchers a much clearer view of the neural activity responsible for functions including movement, speech, sensation, and even thought.
“The new grid is one of the tools,” says John Ngai, who directs the BRAIN Initiative at the National Institutes of Health, which has funded much of the film’s development. It also promises to improve care for people with brain disorders. Ultimately, the goal was to develop better ways of treating human beings. Ngai says, “and I think this gives us a pretty big step toward that goal”.
( )28.Why is the experimental film designed
A.To protect the surface of patients’ brains.
B.To relieve patients’ pain during operations.
C.To restrict the electrical activity of nerve cells.
D.To maintain brain’s vital functions in surgery.
( )29.If the patient is a musician, what task would a surgeon probably give him/her
A.A recipe to look through. B.A composing task to finish.
C.A math formula to figure out. D.A visual cognition task to conduct.
( )30.What’s the advantage of the technology according to paragraph 4
A.Improved resolution. B.Broader view. C.Multiple functions. D.More convenience.
( )31.What is John Ngai’s attitude towards the new technology
A.Critical. B.Cautious. C.Supportive. D.Dismissive.
D
On June 6,1944, the Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy and took the Nazis by surprise in the largest sea-to-land invasion in history. This would be remembered as D-Day. It ultimately led to the end of World War II in Europe. However, this planned attack wouldn’t have been possible without deep, specific knowledge of ocean tides.
Earthly tides have a lot to do with celestial bodies (天体) beyond our planet. They are contingent upon the sun, the moon and earth gravitationally pulling on each other.
One way to visualize this is to think Earth being entirely covered in water—like being engulfed in a giant water droplet. When the sun and the moon pull on this huge droplet, the water bulges (凸出) where those gravitation al pulls are strongest. As Dusek explains, “If I’m standing on this water-covered Earth at a point somewhere, the Earth is rotating underneath this water. And so as I pass one of these bulges, I’m experiencing a high tide. And then as I get past it, I experience a low tide.”
But the connection between the tides and the moon goes deeper. The tides also vary according to the phase of the moon. When there is a full or new moon, the tides are at their most extreme. Humans have long been aware of these changes to the ocean. People have been charting tides for over a thousand years—and discussing them for thousands of years longer.
In modern times, understanding tides not only helps win battles, but also affects how we ship goods globally and where we build homes. That’s why NOAA has put out a report capable of predicting coastal flooding up to a year in advance. Scientists also hope to harness tides as a green energy source. Underwater turbines can generate power when strategically positioned in areas with strong tides like the Bay of Fundy.
( )32.Why is D-Day mentioned in paragraph 1
A.To present the effects of D-Day. B.To stress the importance of D-Day.
C.To intorduce the topic. D.To highlight background.
( )33.What does the underlined phrase “contingent upon” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Dependent on. B.Content with. C.Dedicated to. D.Opposed to.
( )34.Which below affects the change of ocean tides according to the passage
A.Lunar phase. B.Human activities. C.Hug e droplet. D.Coastal flooding.
( )35.What’s the last paragraph mainly about
A.The causes of tides. B.The variations of tides.
C.The drawbacks of tides. D.The applications of tides.

Mushrooms are not only tasty. They are also filled with healthy nutrients, like calcium and potassium, and vitamins, like D and B. Some people not only enjoy eating mushrooms. 36 But that is not for everyone. While some people are knowledgeable enough to collect mushrooms in the woods and eat them, many people are not. Eating the wrong mushroom can make you sick or even dead.
Therefore, buying them is the easier and safer choice. However, there is another one. 37 In a recent article for The Associated Press, plant expert Jessica Damiano explains there are two ways to do this. You can buy a set of materials from a garden store called a “grow kit” or you can put them together yourself.
38 These grow kit s include partly-grown mushroom starters, called “spawn”. The spawn is set in soil and is contained in its own grow box. You put the spawn in water overnight. Then you return it to the box and open it to fresh air. Spray it with water two times a day. Within two or three weeks, you will be eating mushrooms with more on the way. Damiano says it is a fun, easy activity.
If you are more serious about growing mushrooms and want a larger harvest, Damiano says it costs less to put the materials together yourself. For starters, you will need a wooden, metal, or plastic box or container. You will also need a growing substance—soil mixed with compost and other materials. Finally, you will need fungal spores as seeds. 39
Mushrooms usually grow, or “fruit” within a week or two. 40 Depending on the kind of mushroom, they will be ready to harvest, with their tops fully open. That will be in roughly three to four weeks. Use a sharp, clean knife to cut them at soil level to avoid disrupting nearby growth.
A.And people will likely ask you about it.
B.They also like to collect them in the wild.
C.You can purchase these online or at specialty stores.
D.You can grow mushrooms yourself inside your own home.
E.Avoid bringing bacteria or non-mushroom fungi into the box.
F.They nearly double in size daily until they are finished growing.
G.Grow kit s are a great way for beginners to try growing mushrooms.

One day, Bart decided he wanted to get a dog. So he and his parents drove to the local animal shelter. There were two dogs that Bart liked. But he finally picked one named Scruffy. Scruffy looked exactly like his name—he was small, naughty with hair going in all directions. He just wanted to play and run around all the time.
Bart’s parents did not like Scruffy at all. Scruffy was too energetic for them. The other dog, called Lady, was a very pretty and quiet dog. Since his parents insisted, he agreed to adopt Lady but not Scruffy.
Back home, Lady slept in Bart’s room that night and the next night, too. Bart liked having her near him. He started to love that sweet dog.
On the third day, tragedy struck. For no apparent reason, Lady quietly died in her sleep. Bart felt heartbroken.
The next morning, after they had laid Lady to rest, Bart said, “Mom, Dad, I really liked the other dog, Scruffy. I know he liked me, too. Can’t we go back and get him ”
His parents told him to forget Scruffy because three days had gone by, and it would be too late. “Too late Too late for what ” he asked. “There are so many animal-lovers coming to the shelter, and if it were too late, Scruffy might have been adopted by someone else.” replied his father.
“What ” exclaimed Bart, not wanting to hear the answer. “But let’s go back anyway. Maybe we can find Scruffy again.”
So Bart’s parents drove him back to the shelter. When Dad parked the car, the three of them entered the shelter and directly went to the wire cage that had held Scruffy days before, only to find it was empty!
“Scruffy is gone! Mom, Dad, he’s gone! Why ”, shouted Bart in great despair.
At that moment, a gentle voice came from a young woman, “Can I help you, folks ”
“Yes, I want the dog that was here, in this cage. The dog is gone. I want that dog. Where’s the dog ” asked Bart anxiously.
“Oh, sorry to tell you he has been adopted by an old man already.” replied the woman.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

W: That is great.
(Text 3)

M: For sure. How do you want
W: One fifty, five twenties and five tens, please.
(Text 4)
W: Mike has a long head. I bet he will do better in his business.
M: Yes, he started his company three years ago and now ends up becoming the richest among us. But hard work and luck are also important reasons for his success.
(Text 5)
W: Our teacher said that twelve of us had entered the Mathematical Olympiad.
M: Great! That’s one quarter of the students in your class.

M: I remember I put my phone on the sofa, but I don’t know where it is now.
W: Did you search the bedroom or the study
M: I have done that.
W: What about the toilet
M: Oh, you said it.
W: Maybe next time you can just call me. I can help you by calling your number.
M: I can’t remember the number. But I welcome your help.

M: But for me, it’s about pushing myself to the limit.
W: Aren’t you afraid of getting hurt
M: Sure. There’s always a danger of getting hurt, but we don’t do these sports competitively. It’s just for fun. I like trying new things and seeing how far we can push the boundaries of the sport. Do you want to come with us sometime
W: Me I’m not really the adventurous type. I’d rather stay at home and shop online.
M: You never know, Grace. You might like it. After cave diving, we’ll probably try climbing.
W: Oh, that doesn’t sound too bad. I’ve done some climbing before.

M: Oh, dear. Next time I hope you can teach me beforehand. I still don’t understand what the right thing is.

M: Like yesterday, I should have waited until they all sat down
W: Definitely.
M: But when they asked me to drink, I did exactly what they said. Why was I wrong, either
W: Well, when you’re offered a drink or dish, you should say no first. When they ask again, you can say yes.

W: You sure will. I will tell you more in the future.
M: Thank you, dear.
(Text 10)
M: Whenever I tell people that I grew up in London, I am usually greeted with excitement. Now I hope to show you a Londoner’s perspective of what London is really like.
Public transport is not as terrible as we say it is. I only learnt to appreciate how accessible and affordable London’s public transport system is when I moved to Scotland for university.
For a nation of tea-lovers, you’d be surprised to know that we actually consume more coffee than we do tea! It’s important to note that drinking tea is not as elegant as you may think. Tea is a very quick and easy drink to make and is usually made within five minutes. London is definitely a melting pot of culture. It is infused with so many different cultural flavors through food, performance and language. Did you know that there are over 300 languages spoken in London There are many different communities which all contribute to the London culture: Chinatown in central London and an equally big Caribbean community in Notting Hill. Although we Londoners complain about the cost of living, bad weather and poor public transport, deep down in our hearts, London is our unique home.
