第二节:Two Possible Versions

Dear Jim,
I understand your worries and concerns. AI can help us in ways we cannot even imagine, but it also has the potential to overshadow our independent thinking if we rely on it too much.
To get the most out of AI while remaining independent thinkers, I think we need to adopt a few approaches. Firstly, use AI for repetitive tasks that call for a lot of energy but do not require creativity. This will allow us to give more time to intellectually challenging tasks. Also, we need to maintain a critical mindset, always questioning the information presented by AI and not accepting it at face value.
Anyway, AI is already part of our life, and we need to learn to work in harmony with it. What do you think
Best,
Li Hua

Dear Jim,
It’s great to hear from you, and I’m glad to know AI is helping with your learning.
To enjoy the benefits of AI while minimizing risks, first, use AI as a supplementary tool rather than a primary source. This way, you can enhance your learning without becoming overly dependent on it, ensuring you still engage in critical thinking. Second, balance AI usage with traditional study methods by setting specific times for AI use and others for manual learning. This approach will help you maintain and strengthen your independent problem-solving skills and cognitive abilities.
I hope these suggestions are helpful. Looking forward to hearing how they work out for you!
Best,
Li Hua

Text 1
M: Excuse me, do you know if there’s a convenience store still open around here W: Yes. There are many stores on the 22nd Street. It’s a bit of walk, though. M: Can I take a bus W: Yes, but you may need to wait for a long time. Riding a shared bike may be a better choice. M: Good idea. Thank you.
Text 2
M: What a beautiful painting! You painted it W: Yes, I’ve been learning to paint for the past year. I go to classes twice a month. M: Wow, unbelievable! It looks like you have been painting for years. W: Thanks. I’m flattered. You can try it yourself. It’s a great way to deal with stress.
Text 3
W: Have you heard about David M: Absolutely, he is my hero. You know, he’s a famous musician. Despite his tight schedule, he devotes a lot of time to teaching music to poor kids. W: That’s so impressive. M: Exactly! He’s always ready to help others, which is truly inspiring.
Text 4
W: Hi, Eric. What do you want to work on today M: I’d like to strengthen my muscles and do some jogging. W: Well, the running machine is taken by someone else now. Do you think we can start with some push-ups M: OK. Let me get changed first.
Text 5
W: Tom, how was your presentation M: I think I did well because the teacher was smiling all the time. But I had butterflies in my stomach and made some mistakes. W: You had spent a lot of time preparing for it. I’m sure you made it. M: I hope so. Anyway, it’s over. W: Good for you. Let’s eat out after Mom comes back.
第二节
第6段材料。
M: Welcome to Tonight’s Show with Adam Knight. Today we’re lucky to have an environmentalist, Lily Freeman. Welcome, Lily! W: Thank you, Adam. Great to see that so many people are interested in protecting the environment. M: So, Lily, could you give us a brief introduction about the work you do W: Sure. Basically, I collect data on air quality in the city. I monitor the data and inform people when pollution levels are high. M: How do you inform people W: I send out push-messages on a WeChat public account. My readers subscribe to it and receive the most up-to-date air quality report every day. M: Do you have any suggestions on improving air quality for us citizens W: Of course. It’s amazing how simply taking public transportation can enhance air quality. Also, we should all advocate moving the factories out of the city. M: Sounds effective. Let’s all engage in environmental protection…
第7段材料
M: Hey, Alice! So, I’ve been checking out our cycling options for the weekend. Shall we explore White River together W: Sounds interesting. How far is it M: Well, the map says there are two routes available. If we take the southwest trail, it’s about fifty kilometers in total. It might take us around three and a half hours. W: Oh, that’s quite a long trip. M: But along the way, we can see a forest with a campsite where we can have a picnic. W: How long is the other route M: The route that goes southeast is only thirty-seven kilometers long, and there is an amazing waterfall where we can enjoy the breathtaking scenery and take photos. W: That sounds lovely! Let’s take the second route. M: Sure. It would take us about two and a half hours.
第8段材料
Telephone ring…(电话铃声) M: Hello. W: Hi, Tom. This is Diana from the creative writing class. M: Oh, hi, Diana. What’s up W: Well, I have a new project I thought you might be interested in. I’m setting up a writer’s group, you know, a support group for people who are trying to get their writing published. M: Well, how would it work W: We get together once a week. We usually meet up in the library, share what we were working on and offer each other some advice. M: I could use some advice. I’m working on a short story that I’d like to get published in the Campus Literature Review. You’ve done that, haven’t you I saw a poem of yours in the last issue. W: Yes, I was so excited to finally see my work in print, but I got turned down three times before it was accepted. You just have to keep trying if they turn you down. M: Well, I’m sure the group could help me, but I don’t know how much I can contribute. I’m just starting out. W: That’s OK. I know from your comments in class that you will be a valuable member. We will get someone more experienced to help us, too. M: Sounds great. You can definitely count me in.
第三节
Hello everyone, Our world is facing great challenges due to our consumption habits, particularly food waste and plastic pollution, which harm our climate and environment. We all need to make an effort towards sustainability. So, how can we make a difference Let’s start by choosing local, plant-based diets to reduce the loss of biodiversity. Next, consider sustainable travel options: use public transportation and cycle to cut emissions and support eco-friendly city planning. Moreover, we can make our homes more energy-efficient by practicing simple habits like turning off lights when not in use and adjusting heating and cooling systems. When shopping, choose durable and green items and embrace the concept of sharing or repairing goods rather than throwing them away to minimize waste. Together, through these mindful actions, we can pave the way for a healthier planet and secure a brighter future for generations to come. Thank you for your attention and commitment to sustainability.
第四节:
For anyone who is familiar with East Asian art, one of the most familiar subjects is bamboo. It can be found growing across the eastern and southern areas of China. Bamboo is a plant that is very strong yet flexible. It grows all year round, blossoms rarely, and can withstand some of the worst weather Mother Nature can throw at it. If cut down, it grows back very rapidly. In China, bamboo is known as one of the “Three Friends of Winter”, along with pine trees and plum blossoms. In ancient China, bamboo has the title of “gentleman” among other plants. It symbolizes a person who is mentally strong because of its straight yet flexible stem. That is, he’s flexible enough to bend with whatever he faces in life but tough enough to stand strong and keep growing. Meanwhile, due to its empty inside, it also symbolizes a person with a sound mind free from negative thoughts and feelings.
