In 2017, Jennifer Flewellen’s life took a dramatic turn while driving to work. After dropping her kids off at school, she felt light-headed and drove off the road, crashing into a pole. She ended up in a serious condition and was in a faint for five years.
Throughout this challenging time, Jennifer’s mother, Peggy Means, never lost hope for her daughter’s recovery. Doctors repeatedly told Peggy that Jennifer’s chances of waking up were slim and that even if she did awaken, she would not be able to function.
“They encouraged me, by like day two or three to take her off life support,” Peggy recalled. “I said, ‘No, not as of today, I’m not going to do that.’” Peggy’s hope never wavered(动摇).
Despite the difficulties, Peggy cared for Jennifer daily, maintaining a positive attitude and treating her as if she could hear. “I’d tell her what the kids are doing, what we’ve been doing, and I tried to encourage her,” Peggy told GMA. “For years I would hold her hands and say, ‘Just hold my hand, Jennifer. Hold my hand.’" But she never did.
Finally, on August 25, 2022, during a walk, Jennifer laughed at a joke Peggy made. After nearly five years, Jennifer woke up. In the following weeks, with speech treatment and Peggy’s support, Jennifer progressed from making small sounds to saying words and even spelling words. In less than a year, she returned home full-time. Last fall, Jennifer attended her son Julian’s high school football games, fulfilling a dream for both of them.
Despite the progress, Peggy remains focused on Jennifer’s continued recovery and sets goals for her, emphasising the need to stay positive and keep working towards improvement. “We have a lot of work to do still, so we stay busy,” Peggy said. “I want her to walk. I want everything, as much as possible, and we don’t know what’s possible, so we just have to keep doing it.”

Tea has delighted and fascinated the world for thousands of years. China first started exporting tea during the Ming Dynasty(1368—1644), and the drink has since come to lead humanity’s drinking habits far beyond Asia. It is the most widely consumed drink on Earth today, aside from water and coffee. China’s traditional tea-making was added to the intangible cultural heritage list of UNESCO in 2022.
The traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices in China consist of knowledge, skills and practices concerning the management of tea plantations, picking tea leaves, manual processing, drinking and sharing of tea. Since ancient times, Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea. Tea producers have developed six categories of tea: green, yellow, dark, white, oolong and black teas. Together with reprocessed teas, there are over 2,000 tea products in China.
Tea-related customs are not only found across the country, but also influence the rest of the world through the ancient Silk Road and trade routes. Tea is everywhere—in families, workplaces, tea houses and restaurants. The practice of greeting guests and building relationships within families and among neighbours through tea-related activities is common to multiple ethnic groups, providing a sense of shared identity and continuity for the communities.
In China, 44 registered national-level intangible cultural heritage entries are related to tea. There are over 40 vocational colleges and 80 universities that have set up majors in tea science or tea culture, resulting in over 3,000 graduates specialising in tea production and art every year.
28. When did China begin to export tea
A. In 2022. B. Thousands years ago.
C. During the Ming Dynasty. D. In 1644.

D. Picking tea leaves is the most important tea processing technique.
30. How does the author promote Chinese tea culture in the last paragraph
A. By listing figures. B. By making definitions.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
31. Where does this text probably come from
A. A science report. B. A travel journal.
C. A story book. D. A cultural magazine.

Funding of $2 million has gone to researchers developing a new type of solar sail as part of NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts(NIAC)programme, which backs projects that have the potential to transform future missions.
Traditionally, solar sails work by reflecting sunlight—each particle of light that bounces off the thin, shiny material gives a small amount of power to the craft. One big limitation is that if you want to move in any direction other than directly away from the sun, you have to rotate(旋转)the entire sail, so such craft aren’t particularly flexible.
Amber Dubill at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland and her team have developed a solution to this disadvantage. They are working on a sail made of a diffractive(衍射的)material, one that can bounce light in various directions without having to be rotated. It does this via tiny ridges(脊)in the material; the direction of which can be changed by running an electric current through the sail. The resulting sail would have a rainbow appearance.
When the light bounces sideways, it would push the entire spacecraft to the side rather than directly forwards. “Even a small side way kick turns out to be significant when you’re trying to push in a direction that would be difficult or impossible to do by physically rotating the entire sail,” says NIAC science adviser Ron Turner.
Dubill and her team have proposed a mission on which to use their new solar sail. The spacecraft would use this new sail to get to a polar orbit around the sun and observe its top and bottom, which is difficult to do with traditional spacecraft.
The researchers plan to test various materials for how well they work on the sail and in space, while also developing tracks and instruments for the solar mission. If all proceeds without a hitch, at the end of the two-year NIAC award the team will be ready to send a group of spacecraft around the sun.
32. What’s the disadvantage of the traditional solar sails
A. They are not efficient to rotate to the direction needed.
B. They can only be made to reflect a small amount of sunlight.
C. They are made of heavy materials that are hard to carry.
D. Even with a small move, you have to turn the whole sail.
33. What can we know about the new solar sail
A. With it spacecraft would reach a polar orbit.
B. It can do part of work of the traditional sail.
C. No ideas have been made about the access to it.
D. Scientists plan to use one material on it.
34. What does the underlined part “proceeds without a hitch” in the last paragraph mean
A. Is designed. B. Keeps up.
C. Goes well. D. Fails finally.
35. What’s the best title for the text
A. Advancing Rainbow-coloured Solar Sail Project
B. Making Up for the Shortage of Energy in Space Tour
C. Transforming Sunlight into Power to the Craft
D. Working Principles of Rainbow-coloured Solar Sail

How to Make a Personal Budget in Several Steps
Though making a budget may not sound like the most exciting activity, it’s an important part of keeping your financial house in order. 36 If you spend less in one area, you can spend more in another.
Gather your financial paperwork. Before you begin, gather up all your financial statements, including bank statements, investment accounts, credit card bills and so on. You want to have access to any information about your income and expenses. One of the keys to the budget-making process is to create a monthly average. 37
Calculate your income. 38 If your income is in the form of a regular paycheck where taxes are automatically deducted(扣除), then using the net income(or take-home pay)amount is fine. If you are self-employed or have outside sources of income, such as child support or social security, include these as well. Record this total income as a monthly amount.
39 Write down a list of all the expenses you expect to have during a month.
Determine fixed and variable expenses. Fixed expenses are those mandatory(法定的)expenses that you pay the same amount for each time, including rent payments, car payments, set-fee Internet service and so on. 40 For example, you need to spend on groceries, gasoline, entertainment, eating out and gifts.
Make adjustments to expenses. If your expenses are far above your income, you may need to reduce your fixed expenses and increase your income to balance your budget.
A. Create a list of monthly expenses.
B. That’s because budgets rely on balance.
C. Total your yearly income and expenses.
D. How much income can you expect each month
E. The more information you can dig up, the better.
F. But you are not sure how much you spend in each category.
G. Variable expenses are the type that will change from month to month.

There were many people at the event. After seeing their poster, some people came to them and talked with them. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Lily got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lily started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today.”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” another volunteer said.
While they were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to them. He stood in front of their poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer ”
Lily explained what cancer is. Then she said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That’s why we’re collecting money for it.”
“Do children suffer from cancer, too ” asked the boy.
“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help.” Lily nodded and said.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, “How much money have you collected ”
Lily was embarrassed to tell him that they didn’t raise much money. The boy looked into their donation container and only saw a few dollars. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. What’s more, people always watch or participate in dragon boat competitions in honour of Qu Yuan who is a great patriotic poet in Chinese history.

The boy happily ran to Lily and asked, “Would you accept a donation from children ” Lisa couldn’t believe such a little boy would care. Though she didn’t believe it, she said, “yes”. The boy put his hand in his pocket and took out 100 dollars. He said, “I just asked for them from my mother. I really want to help the children suffering from cancer.” After speaking, the little boy put the money into the donation container without hesitation.
Lisa was deeply touched. She wanted to thank the boy, but he left soon. Looking at his back, Lisa and other volunteers were greatly encouraged. They wanted to try harder to raise money. So instead of just standing there, they went to people and told them about the programme. At the end of the day, they raised over three thousand dollars, a lot more than Lisa had expected in the beginning.

One possible version:
Dear Jack,
Hearing that you are interested in the Dragon Boat Festival, I’m writing to introduce you something about it.
The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on May 5th according to the lunar calendar. During this festival, people always eat delicious zongzi which is made of sticky rice, meat, jujube and so on. What’s more, people always watch or participate in dragon boat competitions in honour of Qu Yuan who is a great patriotic poet in Chinese history.
I know you’re fascinated by this festival, so I’d like to extend a personal invitation for you to come and experience it in person. Looking forward to your visit during this festive time.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:

W: Don’t worry. I’ll make an announcement to call her to the front desk.

M: Oh, it’s my pleasure. And please call me Mike.
W: OK, Mike, you’ve been cooking since you were a child, and you’ve been a professional chef for over twenty years. Why do you love cooking so much
M: It’s the best way for people to communicate, in my opinion. You don’t need language. You don’t have to have anything in common. It’s easy to make new friends when you share a meal together.
W: So, what are differences in the food of different countries
M: Well, in the West, people eat a lot of bread, while in Asia, rice and noodles are more common. Beef is very common in countries like the United States, but it’s not popular in Northern Europe.
W: What do you think is the most important factor in cooking
M: I think that fresh local foods are the most important part of any type of cooking.
Text 10
Hello, everyone! I’m John, President of the Student Union. Now I have an important announcement to make. There are a few changes that have been made to the visit. So, please pay full attention to what I’m saying next. We still have been arranged to pay a visit to the local museum this weekend, but it’s on Saturday. We were informed that the museum wouldn’t open this Sunday due to some special reasons. And we are going to meet in the playground instead of the school gate at eight o’clock in the morning. We will go directly there by school bus. Owing to the very big museum, you’d better wear comfortable shoes for long walks. More than anything, please bring a notebook with you and make some notes. We will have a discussion about it in the class meeting next Monday.
Oh, I nearly forget to remind you of the rules. Don’t take pictures of the cultural relics. But if you do want to take a picture, you can do that in front of the museum. And nobody is allowed to touch anything there, or else they will be fined.
Have a nice weekend!
