Ieoh Ming Pei, one of the last great modernist architects, was born in Guangzhou, China in 1917 into a wealthy family. His father was a banker. His artistic mother—a calligrapher and musician—had the greater influence on him. Despite not speaking English, he moved to the US at the age of 18 to study at Pennsylvania, MIT and Harvard. He worked as a research scientist for the US government during World War Two, and went on to work as an architect, founding his own firm in 1955. He carried on working well into old age, creating one of his most famous masterpieces—the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar—in his 80s.
Although Pei worked mostly in the United States, he will always be remembered for a European project: his redevelopment of the Louvre Museum in Paris in the 1980s. Pei was the first foreign architect to work on the Louvre in its long history, and initially his designs were strongly opposed. But in the end, the French—and everyone else—were won over. His glass pyramid outside the Louvre, completed in 1989, is now one of Paris’ most famous landmarks.
He has designed buildings, hotels, schools and other structures across North America, Asia and Europe. His other works include Dallas City Hall and Japan’s Miho Museum. His style was influenced by his love of Islamic (伊斯兰) architecture. His favoured building materials were glass and steel, with a combination of concrete.
He won a variety of awards and prizes for his buildings, including the AIA Gold Medal, the Praemium Imperiale for Architecture. In 1983 Pei was given the fifth Pritzker Architecture Prize for giving the 20th century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms. He used his $100,000 prize money to start a scholarship fund for Chinese students to study architecture in America.

LOS ANGELES—There are 69,144 people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, the most populous county in the United States, according to the results of the 2022 Homeless Count released by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) on Thursday.
The number marks a 4. 1 percent rise from the last count in 2020, said the authority, adding that a count was not conducted in 2021 in the county, home to around 10 million people.

A new study proves when teenagers cut back on social media use, they seem to feel better about themselves. Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University, conducted the study. She said the research came from her own personal experiences. “I couldn’t help but compare myself when I was using social media, making me unsatisfied with my self-image,” Thai says. Although she was aware that social media posts often presented images that can be unrealistic in real life, it still had a negative impact on her. So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reduced time on social media would increase self-confidence in body image.
They hired a few hundred volunteers, aged 14-18, all of whom had experienced signs of anxiety or depression, which could make them easier to be affected by social media. Half of the teens were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media freely, which averaged about three hours per day. The researchers gave the teens surveys at the beginning and end of the study. It included statements such as “I’m pretty happy about the way I look,” and “I am satisfied with my weight.”
Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance satisfaction improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5-point scale. “This may seem like a small change, but any change in such a short period of time is striking,” the authors say.
“This research showed promising results that weight and appearance confidence can improve when people cut back on social media use,” wrote Thai. Thai says it’s encouraging that teens were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks. It’s also worth experimenting this approach with other groups, such as people with or at risk of eating disorders.
32. What inspired Thai to do the research
A. Her self-image. B. Social media posts.
C. Her own experiences. D. Her self-confidence.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about

A. Discouraging. B. Surprising. C. Disappointing. D. Confusing.

A. Teens cut back screen time easily.
B. The approach of the research is applicable.
C. Reduced screen time improves appearance.
D. The result of the research is beyond expectation.

Sam was a ten-year-old boy living with his single mother, Helen and sister, Ann. They lived a hard life, Sam felt bad for their situation but worse for himself, especially in school.
Sam’s leather (皮革) boots were worn out. They didn’t protect his feet from the rain, and his socks became totally wet as water went through the holes in his shoes. Helen attempted to fix the holes, but it was no use. Sam still walked to school with that pair of broken shoes. How much he wished he could also have new, comfortable and expensive shoes his classmates wore!
One day, Sam returned from school and complained to Helen, “It was raining today. Water has leaked into my shoes again. I hate my boots! Why can’t you get me new ones ” Helen was sad and helpless. “I spent our last savings on your sister’s medicine. She’s sick. Sam, you know that. You need to act like a responsible big brother!” she answered. Tears welled up in Sam’s eyes. “I hate you!” he shouted. “You only care about Ann! You don’t love me!” Then he cried and ran to his room.
After preparing dinner, Helen went to his room with his dinner plate. “I’m sorry, Sam,” she whispered to comfort him. “We’re going through a very tough journey recently. But I’ll get you new shoes in the future.” But Sam refused to listen to her.
The next day, when Sam went to class, he took his seat quietly and hid his feet under his chair, as usual. He was embarrassed to show his boots.
As the math teacher, Mrs Brooke, entered the class, all the students greeted her. “Today, we have a very special friend with us,” she smiled. “Everyone, please welcome Matt, your new classmate.”
Soon after, a boy with a pair of walking sticks entered. The new boy only had one leg. Sam was shocked. He and all his classmates thought how unlucky Matt was. And they thought Matt must be very shy and sad. They didn’t know Matt was actually outgoing, confident and positive. While they were showing great pity to him, Mrs Brooke asked Matt to introduce himself.

第二节
One possible version:
To Sam’s surprise, Matt walked to the platform cheerfully and confidently. He talked aloud, happily and humorously. When Matt finished, they all clapped because of his talent for speaking and also his courage. Throughout the day, Matt smiled at everyone and seemed joyful. Confused about why he wasn’t sad without a leg, Sam approached him and asked him. Matt smiled “I have lost a leg, but I have walking sticks that take me around. I’m grateful for that.”
Inspired by Matt, Sam realized he should appreciate what he had and apologize to his mom. After school, he gladly walked home. When reaching home, he said to his mom, “Mom, I’m sorry I shouted at you. I should thank you for this pair of leather shoes, instead. Otherwise, I have to go to school barefoot. And I will take good care of Ann.” “Oh, I love you, honey. You are a big boy!” Helen hugged Sam, and her tears poured down her cheeks silently.

Text 10
Hi, come in. I’m Sally. Hello everybody. Welcome to the Grange Park Sports Center. I’ll just show you around the center and explain what we offer here, and then you can ask me questions. Well, as you can see, this is quite a small center but we offer a lot of different activities at different times of the day. If you’d just like to come through here, you can see the main rooms. These are nice, bright and airy and we have a very good air-conditioning system so they are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Here we have classes of yoga, Tai chi and Zumba at different levels. We also have different types of dance class: jazz dancing, Indian dancing and Latin dancing. All our teachers are quite experienced. We have beginners’ classes up to advanced. Some of our students have been coming since we opened ten years ago.
So, if you could follow me through here—mind the steps here—we have the gym with various exercise machines. It’s quite a small gym, but usually there’s plenty of room for people to move around without any problems. Over there we have the changing rooms with showers. You do need to bring your own towel if you want a shower, but you don’t need to bring a mat for the yoga classes.
