Sia Godika was 13 when she noticed the barefoot children of construction workers at a building site near her house.“Their feet were bare. Cracked(开裂的)! Dirtv! Blroding!”reflects Sia, now 17.“They were just walking around that building site.”And it was at that mo ment that Sia realized the troubling contrast to her own privilege (优待).
“I went back home, looked at my own feet and thought. Wow,I'm 13 years old. My feet are so tender. These children are just seven or eight...”She describes opening her wardrobe(衣柜)doors and seeing shoes, many of which hadn't been worn for months or years. Then she rushed to give them all away to the same children she saw at the building site.
Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity aimed at providing footwear to those in need, with the slogan:“Donate a sole.save a soul.”
After that, she spread the word with posters and WhatsApp groups, then enquires (咨询)from people who wanted to help came flooding in. Now in its fi fth year, the organizabon runs activities to collect used footwear, repairs it and donates the finished products to people in need.
In its first activity, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes. Today that number reaches around 28.000 across the UK. the United States. China and Liberia. thanks to the hard work of a core team of about 80 volunteers.
But the organization's growth also faced challenges.“Being a 13-year-old. I did encounter a lot of bus(偏见) because at my age. people were less willing to he ar me out,"says Sia.
In 2021. Sia was given the Diana Award, which was awarded by a UK-based charity of the same name. It's one of the greatest honors a young person can receive for social action or humanitarian(人道主义的) work. But her work is still on the road.“Our goal has always been to touch a million feet,“she says.
