【原文】In the US the most popular way to welcome the new year is with a big party. Some parties are at private homes, but in recent years, it has become more and more common for Americans to go to a hotel or eating place on the night of December thirty first. There they can eat a big dinner, drink champagne and dance to music. Most new year’s parties are usually noisy. The biggest and noisiest new year’s party in the US takes place on Times Square in New York. Thousands of people gather there. Some of them ring bells and set off fireworks. Others blow whistles. The Times Square celebration includes another well-known American tradition. Since 1929 the band of musician Guy Lombardo has given a concert on New Year’s Eve. Guy Lombardo died in 1977. But Bill Lombardo has kept the tradition alive with a band concert at a New York city hotel.

24.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Ferreira’s new article discusses the new ways that scientists value whether babies are conscious: measuring brainwave responses to unexpected sounds, using imaging to value the brain’s networks, and tracking eye movements such as blinks to see how babies react to different stimuli (刺激).(Ferreira的新文章讨论了科学家评估婴儿是否有意识的新方法:测量对意外声音的脑电波反应,使用成像来评估大脑网络,以及跟踪眼睛运动(如眨眼)来观察婴儿对不同刺激的反应。)”可知,Ferreira是通过测量婴儿的大脑活动来获得新证据的。故选A项。

Until quite recently, people thought that babies needed more brain development to be able to feel pain. Now we know that even though the baby brain is still developing, the feeling of pain seems to already be there.(这对婴儿护理也很有用。 故选A项。

40.空处是段首句,总领全文。后文“Probably the most important aspect of education that travel helps is your education about yourself.”(旅行对教育的最大帮助可能在于它对你的自我教育。)是对段首句的解释,强调的自我教育是旅行对教育的最大帮助,A项“You learn about yourself.”(你了解自己)符合语意,再结合其它段首句的结构,都是you learn…,故选A项。

67.One morning, something amazing happened. At that time, I went to water the plant as usual. To my surprise, a small bud appeared in the plastic cup. Under the supervision of grandpa, I spent three weeks watering the soil, not caring about the result, just watering it, and it did give wonders to me! I told my grandfather with excitement. He gave me praise kindly and said, “Nothing in the world is difficult if you are willing to put your heart into it. Keep trying.”
This was perhaps my first lesson in the power of perseverance. I couldn’t help feeling that no matter how big a problem I encountered in my study. I could devote myself to solving it if I kept at it. Thank my grandpa for giving me such a precious plant. It is grandpa that let me understand that life on the road is easier as long as you don’t give up. It is possible to create a miracle! Therefore, whether it is to treat their own life, or treat their own work, the most important thing is to stick to it and act actively. There may be unexpected good harvest!

Babies blink and cry — and a few weeks into their lives, they might smile. But do these movements mean that newborns have conscious (有意识的) experiences of understanding the world around them
Based on recent studies valuing babies’ brain activities and eye movements, the case for consciousness in newborns is increasingly strong. “We still don’t have a final answer, but new evidence has contributed to an increasing agreement that consciousness starts early, in comparison with other theories that claim we need more cognitive (认知的) development for babies to become conscious,” says Ferreira, professor of bi ology at the NYU School.
This new evidence for consciousness relies on methods that creatively value brain activity in newborns. Babies can’t respond to directions and sleep quite a bit, making their minds difficult to study. Ferreira’s new article discusses the new ways that scientists value whether babies are conscious: measuring brainwave responses to unexpected sounds, using imaging to value the brain’s networks, and tracking eye movements such as blinks to see how babies react to different stimuli (刺激).
Knowing when and how consciousness arises is really important for parents’ relationships with babies. Parents usually already believe that their babies are conscious creatures and can experience suffering and pleasure. They try to make their babies comfortable and make sure that they have a better environment for their development. If we have a better understanding about babies’ conscious minds, we may be able to better the way we relate to babies.
This may also be useful for baby care. Until quite recently, people thought that babies needed more brain development to be able to feel pain. Now we know that even though the baby brain is still developing, the feeling of pain seems to already be there.
24.How did Ferreira get the new evidence
A.By measuring babies’ brain activity. B.By searching for related experience.
C.By collecting unknown sounds. D.By comparing different pictures.
25.What is the challenge of studying consciousness in babies
A.Behavior observation is unreliable.
B.Babies can’t follow researcher’s directions.
C.Babies’ sleep state is completely different.
D.Valuing the brain’s networks is not scientific.

A.Our knowledge of baby consciousness needs improvement.

Human experts spend years roasting and tasting coffee from many places to learn about the beans. They might then combine (混合) a coffee bean from Africa with another one from South America to come up with a new blend (混合). But, a coffee roasting company in Helsinki, Finland is hoping that artificial intelligence, or AI, can help ease the workload.
Kaffa Roastery recently brought out its “AI-conic” blend at the Helsinki Coffee Festival. The blend is a mixture of four kinds of beans, including Fazenda Pinhal from Brazil. It is the result of a joint project by Kaffa and Elev, a local AI business.
Svante Hampf is the founder of Kaffa Roastery. He and his partners wanted to do an experiment to see what blend the computer would produce. “We basically gave descriptions of all our coffee types and their flavours to AI and instructed it to create a new exciting blend,” Hamp f said. The “AI-conic” blend combined beans from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and Guatemala. It is described as “a well-balanced blend of sweetness and ripe fruit”.
Hampf said he thought the combination was “somewhat weird”. He was surprised that the AI programme chose to make the blend out of four different kinds of beans. Most humans choose only two or three beans. However, after the first blind test of the new blend, Kaffa’s coffee experts agreed that the AI-assisted blend was perfect. There was no need to change.
Elev’s Antti Merilehto said “AI-conic” is an example of “how AI can introduce new viewpoint to experienced professionals”. The International Coffee Organization says that the 5.6 million people in Finland drink the most coffee per person in the world. And the roasters at Kaffa said they hope the AI project will help to bring more things to the strong coffee culture in the country.
Hamp f called it a “first step”, adding, “I think AI has plenty to offer us in the long run. We are particularly impressed of the coffee taste descriptions it created.”

Most of us agree that life’s real education happens outside the classroom. 36 However, they are not the only ones. In fact, traveling is the best way to learn things. Here are some reasons why traveling is the best form of education.
You learn history. 37 All that was really cool. However, nothing beats traveling to historic landmarks and exploring your way around a city’s history and culture. When you visit museums, palaces and galleries, the entire nation’s history comes out right in front of you. Learning about different dynasties, conflicts and changes is so much easier when you actually explore a nation.
You learn social skills. You may be shy and find it difficult to engage yourself socially. But traveling will change that as things like talking to strangers are not an option but a necessity during travels. Taking some social skill courses is useful. However, you can achieve it by traveling your way to a wonderful place on your own. 38
You learn to do new things. When you are traveling, you are forced to do plenty of new things. 39 Therefore, you must learn to be able to adapt to a new learning environment in a very short time. It also helps in your overall learning as well.
40 Probably the most important aspect of education that travel helps is your education about yourself. By traveling, you realize your true potential, the things that you really enjoy and the person who you really are. Without travel, you probably have a very limited understanding of yourself. And you may even be completely unaware of your real personality.
A.You learn about yourself.
B.You learn a lot by chatting.
C.You are out of your comfort or familiar situation.
D.You’ll learn much better than through such courses.
E.You can study about the major historical events in your history class.
F.Classrooms with teachers and textbooks are of course one way to learn.
G.This helps you meet a lot of new people and experience some exciting things.

Often, when he came to visit, my grandfather would bring me a present. These were never the sorts of things that other people brought, such as dolls, books or toys. My dolls and toys have been gone for more than half a century, but many of my grandfather’s gifts are still with me.
Once he brought me a little plastic cup. I looked inside, expecting to see something special. But there was only some loose soil in it, which made me disappointed. He smiled at me affectionately. Turning around, he picked up a little teapot from my dolls’ tea set and took me to the kitchen where he filled the little cup with water. Back in the living room, he put it on the windowsill(窗台) and handed me the teapot. “If you promise to put some water in the cup every day, something may happen.” he told me.
At that time, I was only five years old. This whole thing made no sense to me at all. I looked at him doubtfully and asked, “Do I have to water it every day What will happen ” He nodded to me with encouragement, “Yes, every day, dear.”
And so I promised. At first, curious to see what would happen, I did not mind doing this. But as the days went by and nothing changed, it got harder and harder to remember to put water in the cup. After a week, I asked my grandfather if it was time to stop yet. Shaking his head no, he said, “Every day.” The second week was even harder, and I became regretful of my promise to put water in the cup. When my grandfather came again, I tried to give it back to him, but he refused to take it, saying simply the same words, “Every day.” By the third week, I began to forget to put water in the cup during the day. Often, I would remember only after I had been put to bed and would have to get out of bed and water it in the dark. But I did not miss a single day.
