Fish genetically engineered to glow blue, green, or red under blacklight have been a big hit among aquarium lovers for years. But the fluorescent (发荧光的) pet is not restricted to glass displays anymore. The red-and-green-glowing versions, more vivid than normal zebrafish even in natural light, have escaped fish farms in southeastern Brazil and are multiplying (繁殖) in creeks in the Atlantic Forest, a new study shows. It is a rare example of a transgenic animal accidentally becoming established in nature, and a concern for biologists, who worry the transgenic fish could threaten the local fauna (动物群) in one of the most bio-diverse spots on the planet.
In the 2000s, companies saw the potential of the fish as pets. Trademarked as Glofish, they became the world’s first genetically engineered species to be commercially available. Now, they are one of the first to escape and thrive in nature. Early on, environmentalists worried about the possibility, and Glofish sales were banned in some U. S. states such as California and several countries-including Brazil. In 2014, a single Glofish was spotted in canals of Florida. But it had not multiplied, probably because native predators such as the eastern mosquitofish and the largemouth bass ate the intruder, said the biologist who spotted the fish, Quenton Tuckett. Unlike Florida, Glofish thrived in the Brazilian creeks. In 2017 he and colleagues began to survey five creeks in three cities, finding transgenic zebrafish in all of them.
The Glofish are reproducing all year round, with a peak during the rainy season — just as native zebrafish do in Asia. But the transgenic fish seem to achieve sexual maturity earlier than their forebears, which allows them to reproduce more and spread faster. The invaders are also eating well: a diversified diet of native insects, algae, and zooplankton.
Despite Brazil’s ban on sales of the fish, stores all over the country sell them as pets. They may soon colonize other parts of the country. Tuckett says it should be “a wake-up call”. For now, the glowing fish “could be considered little weeds growing up out of the concrete”, Tuckett says, but points out that even little weeds can grow to cause a lot of damage.

From a young age, I would climb up and down for fun. My first introduction to gymnastics was through my older sister Arielle, who used to be a gymnast. She taught me how to do my first cartwheel(侧手翻). By the end of the week, I was teaching myself one-armed cartwheels and my sister said to my mom, “You need to put this kid in gymnastics.”
At about age 9, I realized that I wanted to pursue the Olympic path. I was used to the public eye, but the Olympic stage was different. The Olympics teach you to act in a certain way and to be disciplined(守纪律的). They teach you to be a mature young lady, and you grow up fast.
When I started this journey, I never knew what it actually took to get to the Olympics. I thought it was: Training. I had to quit a normal kind of life for gymnastics, but I didn’t mind. I moved from Virginia Beach to Iowa to get a different coach. I sacrificed my privacy. Gymnastics was what I was going to eat, breathe and sleep with. It takes a lot to be an Olympic athlete. You may have a talent, but the people who work harder than you will overtake you.
Throughout my career, a lot of people have doubted me. When someone tells you that you can’ do it, especially when there are many people, you start to believe it. It took me years to figure out how great I was at gymnastics. Fear held me back when I hurt my leg in 2011, but I told myself that I had a talent and that I was going to use it. I went to the world championships and got a team gold.
I won three gold medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and helped Team USA win gold at the 2011 and 2015 World Championships. My mom used to say, “Inspire a generation.” It’s one thing when you say it, but I never thought that I would be a pioneer and that people would draw inspiration from my story.

According to a study done by University of Michigan researchers, shopping to relieve stress was up to 40 times more effective at giving people a sense of control and shoppers were three times less sad compared to those who only browsed for items.
More than half of the 1,000 consumers participating in the survey said they have impulsively (冲动地) shopped to deal with feelings of stress, anxiety or depression. Twenty-three percent of respondents said they’ve maxed out a credit card in the past year. Millennials, 68 percent, responded by saying they have stress spent in the past, compared with 53 percent of Gen Xers and only 26 percent of Baby Boomers.
By gender, 48 percent of men and 31 percent of women who have stress spent said they had purchased alcohol when stressed. 82 percent of women stress spent on clothing compared to 52 percent of men. Women also lead stress spending for jewelry, 42 percent, compared to 22 percent for men, with men stress spending more for electronics, 44 percent versus 30 percent for women.
In fact, shopping to reduce stress can actually help you live a healthier life by making sure that your blood pressure is lowered. Shopping to relieve stress is also known as retail therapy (疗法) as a form of regulating stress. The survey found that 82 percent had only positive feelings about their purchases and that the positive mood boost that followed those purchases was long-lasting.
However, the side effect of retail therapy, for many, can start out as a relatively harmless mood booster but could possibly grow into an impulse that uses up money and cause conflict, thereby adding a significant amount of stress to a person’s life.
