Today, we all use Beijing Time. Do you know how it was “born” Ye Shuhua is the “Mother of Beijing Time”.
On Nov. 2,2021, Ye gave a talk in English. She told women to fight for gender equality (性别平等). It got popular online. Ye herself is a role model for women.
In 1951, Ye began her work at the Xujiahui Observatory (天文台) in Shanghai. She was the only woman there. Observatories help us know accurate (准确的) time by looking at the stars. At that time, only Xujiahui Observatory could do the job in China. But its accuracy wasn’t so good as that of other countries.
Ye did quite a few tests for several months. Finally, she found a way to keep time more accurately. This work made China have universal time system (世界时系统). It would help scientists a lot. In 1966, Beijing Time came into the world based on the system. In 1981, Ye became head of the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, the first woman to do this job in China.
Ye said that women can help make the world better. “If we want to get something, we have to fight for it. We must show our talent. In fact, if we do better and try our best, then I think the position (地位) of women will become as high as men or even higher,” said Ye.

School life is often happy and exciting. How can we keep those good memories (回忆) Most high schools in the United States have a yearbook. The yearbook comes out once a year. It is a “book of memories”for students.
