After Miles Fetherston-Resch learned that sharks were in trouble, he was confused by how people treated the oceans and the creatures that lived in them. “I saw a polluted beach,” he said. “The adults are doing something about it. Why can't I ”
With the help of his mom, Miles then started an organization called Kids Saving Oceans. What started with $13 from his piggy bank as a 6-year-old boy has grown to $26,000 raised for ocean conservation (保护). If you have been out and about in Atlanta, you have probably seen something very unusual—groups of people who are reading silently to themselves. These meet-ups are a way for people to read and socialize, which is part of a growing trend of Silent Book Club (SBC).
The global organization has over 1,000 branches where adults of all ages come to read. The first chapter was founded in San Francisco in 2012 by two women, and the idea really took off and is now fostering this love of reading and connection in 50 countries.
The Atlanta chapter usually has between 130 and 170 people attending. It is increasingly popular with the participants. “It is a space where I can quietly read with others,” Danielle Clarke, a reader with SBC Atlanta, said.
Once the reading session ends, people can move around and socialize with one another, or not. “As a new reader, I thought it would be special to step into this space with my books and hopefully meet new people,” said Spencer Bonner, another reader with SBC Atlanta.
SBC is part of a new resurgence (复苏) of the old-style book clubs, where everyone reads the same book and comes together to discuss it.
In this digital world where people work long days on computers, book clubs are a way to make genuine human offline connections.
“I want to connect with my friends in a context that doesn't rely on spending money and the book club offers at least one inexpensive social opportunity per month,” one book club regular said.
Some book clubs focus on economic issues while others focus on literature. What they all have in common is that they give people a sense of belonging, something everyone needs.

Climate change is a big problem for corals (珊瑚虫). I div e to find out. By keeping track of corals in French Polynesia, I hope to determine how much stress they're under.
Coral reefs are like underwater cities made up of tiny animals called corals. They are in symbiosis with tiny plants called algae (海藻). The algae make food for the corals using sunlight. This is called photosynthesis (光合作用). In return, corals produce carbon dioxide and waste, which can be used by the algae as raw materials for photosynthesis.
In French Polynesia, there's a place called Moorea where scientists study corals. My colleagues and I use special floating platforms to look at the corals from different angles. This helps us find problems, like when other plants try to take over.
Two types of coral, Acropora pulchra and Acropora cytherea, are being studied. The pulchra stays its usual dark yellow color, but the cytherea, which is usually light brown or purple, has turned white. This white color is not good. It happens when the water gets too warm for too long. The corals get stressed and push out the algae. Without the algae, the corals can't get food and they turn white, which can lead to them dying.
When my colleagues and I go diving, we use a plastic sheet to help us look at the corals and write down what we see. We check the water temperature, the color of the corals, and if we see any signs of the corals being in trouble.
Some corals seem to be stronger and can handle warmer water better than others. We want to find out why this is, so we can help protect corals. But the best way to help corals is to stop pollution and global warming, which are making the oceans too warm for them.
