2024新高考Ⅰ卷中的地道表达
1. start out
在大多数同学的印象中，start一般与to搭配,表示开始做某事，但是start out也是一个常见搭配，有以下两种常见用法：
①起初是，表示某人/某物起初作为......而存在，而后不再是这样了。
If sb. or sth. starts out as a particular thing, they are that thing at the beginning although they change later.
②着手开始做，以 (做某事) 开始
If sb. start out by doing sth, sb. does it at the beginning of an activity.
让我们回顾高考真题例句：
“Farber, a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian.”

很明显，在例句中使用的是第一种用法，意思是：Farber在他职业生涯开始时是一名更为传统的兽医，（但是现在他没有那么传统了）
第二种用法也很常见：
Eg: I'm careful to start out by saying clearly what I want.
我小心地以清楚地说出自己想要的东西开始
2. put sth. to sleep
仅从字面理解，该短语是“使某人入睡；使某人进入睡眠状态”，确实有这个含义。
但后来put sth. to sleep也衍生出了更深层次的意思：
“安乐死，为了减轻动物的痛苦，通过药物或其他方式使其安详地死去。”
真题例句：
After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber's treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months.

在例句中，根据后文“she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months”，我们也不难猜出，这里“put him to sleep”的意思是“让他永远睡去”。
例句翻译：利·廷代尔那条名叫查理的爱犬患有严重的心脏病。廷代尔说，查理心脏病发作后，她准备让他没有痛苦地离开，但法伯的治疗大大减轻了查理的痛苦，能够让他多活五个月。
又如：I'm going take the dog down to the vet’s and have her put to sleep.
我打算把这只狗带到兽医那儿，让她无痛苦地死去。

3. if the past is any indication
如果直接翻译这句话，很可能会写成“如果过去是任何迹象的话”，但是这样的翻译很难让人理解这个表达原本的意思。
其实“If the past is any indication” 是英文中一个地道且常用的表达。用来说明过去的情况或事件可以作为预测未来情况的参考。
这个短语在各种正式和非正式的语境中都很常见，可以翻译为
“以过往的情况来参考的话，以往的迹象表明”
高考真题例句：
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right.

翻译：Faber确信，随着时间的推移，这种整体疗法会越来越受欢迎。以往的迹象表明，他可能是对的。
又如，著名美剧生活大爆炸第四季第六集中，谢尔顿和莱纳德在玩电脑游戏时有一段对话：

Sheldon: If the past is any indication, no. 根据以往经验，不行。
4. shine through
shine 的意思是“发光”，through表示通过穿过，这个词组的意思是“清晰可见，指能够清晰地被看到、表达或展示出来；（优势，长处）得以明显显现出来”
高考真题例句：
The benefits of print reading particularly shine through when experimenters move from posing simple tasks—like identifying the main idea in a reading passage—to ones that require mental abstraction—such as drawing inferences from a text.

翻译：当实验者从提出简单的任务（如识别阅读文章大意）转向需要抽象智力的任务（如从文本中进行推理）时，纸质阅读的好处尤为明显。
例如，在今年的高考作文中表示，“我”在户外美术课上的作品别具一格，就可以用上这个短语：
My heartwarming painting shined through when all my classmates decided to draw trees or grass.
当我的同学们都决定去画树或者草的时候，我的这幅暖心的画作就脱颖而出了。
5. leaf through
leaf 这个词用作名词想必同学们并不陌生，意思是树叶；
不过它还有个意思，即（书中的）一页：
A leaf is one of the pieces of paper of which a book is made.

Eg：He put the wrappers between the leaves of his book. 他把包装纸夹在了书页中间。
让我们再回到真题例句：
I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers.

很明显leaf在本句中用作动词，而leaf作动词几乎只有这一种用法，表示：匆匆翻阅；浏览
to quickly turn over the pages of a book, etc. without reading them or looking at them carefully ——牛津词典
翻译：我是一个守旧的人，我更喜欢精装书和能用手指翻阅的书页。
这里hard cover意思是精装书
这里给大家补充另一个与leaf有关的短语：turn over a new leaf 开始新的一页
to start to behave in a better or more acceptable way.
例如我们想表达，进入大学常被视为是进入生命新篇章的机会，就可以说：
Entering college is usually regarded as an opportunity to turn over a new leaf.
6. take （no） account of sth
这个短语出现在2024新高考阅读七选五的B选项中：
It takes no account of the context.
如果同学们不知道这个短语的意思，那么就无法判断该选项是否在原文中有对应的位置，从而感觉题目难度增加。
让我们先来看看柯林斯词典对这个短语的解释：
PHRASE If you take sth into account, or take account of sth, you consider it when you are thinking about a situation or deciding what to do. 考虑到
所以 take account of sth 的意思与consider相近，表示考虑到，而没有考虑到，就是：take no account of sth
所以该选项的意思是：它没有考虑上下文。
