Long ago, an old man and his son lived on the northern borders. They kept many horses. One night, there was a terrible storm. One of his horses was missing. His neighbors came to comfort him when they heard the news. However, he said, “Maybe it’s not such a bad thing.” The neighbors kept quiet. They couldn’t understand the old man.
很久以前，一位老人与他的儿子居住在北方边境。他们饲养着众多骏马。有天晚上，一场可怕的暴风雨袭来，其中的一匹马失踪了。邻居们听到这个消息后前来安慰老人。然而老人却说：“也许这并不是件坏事。”邻居们默然无语。他们难以理解老人的深意。
Several months later, the missing horse came back with a great steed beside it. His neighbors came to congratulate him, telling him that he had good luck. But the old man said, “Perhaps my horse returning is not such a good thing.” The neighbors kept quiet again. They really couldn’t understand the old man.几个月后，失踪的马带着一匹壮马回来了。邻居们前来祝贺老人，称其幸运。但老人却说：“也许我的马回来并不是件好事。”邻居们再次默然。他们实在无法领悟老人的智慧。
His son loved riding, and every morning he took a ride. But one day, he fell off the great steed and hurt his legs. Neighbors came to comfort the old man, and again the old man said, “Maybe it’s not such a bad thing.” The neighbors kept quiet again. They really couldn’t understand the old man.老人的儿子热爱骑马，每天早晨都会骑行。但有一天，他从那匹壮马上摔下来，受伤了。邻居们再度前来慰问老人，而老人又说：“也许这并不是件坏事。”邻居们再次沉默。他们终究无法明白老人之言。
One year later, all young men in the country were asked to join the army. And most of them died during the war. Luckily, his son didn’t have to join the war because of his broken legs. Just then, neighbors understood the old man.一年后，全国所有的年轻人被征召入伍。多数人在战争中殒命。幸运的是，老人的儿子因伤而免于战事。那时，邻居们才领悟了老人所言。
Good things and bad things can be exchanged. Bad things can become good things, and good things can become bad things.善恶无常，祸福相倚。祸事可成喜事，喜事亦可化祸事。

Thousands of years ago, there was a farmer. One day, while he was working in the field, he saw a rabbit run into a nearby tree and died. The farmer took the rabbit home and cooked it for dinner. It was the best meal he had. He was really happy. The next day, he decided to stop working and wait for another rabbit to die accidentally. However, no rabbit came at all. Day after day, he didn’t water his crops and they all died. Finally, the farmer was starved to death before any rabbit came.
数千年前，有一位农夫。有一天，他在田地里劳作时，看到一只兔子不慎跑进附近的树丛里，然后死了。农夫把这只兔子带回家，烹饪成了晚餐。那顿饭是他吃过的最美味的一餐，他感到无比快乐。第二天，他决定停止劳作，期待再有一只兔子意外死亡。然而，没有一只兔子出现。日复一日，他疏忽了给庄稼浇水，导致所有庄稼都枯死了。最终，在兔子出现之前，这位农夫被饿死了。
The story tells us that no pains, no gains, and we can't always be the lucky ones. If you want something, you should pay your efforts at first.这个故事告诉我们，不劳则无获，世事并非总能幸运相随。如果你想要得到某样东西，得先付出努力。

In the Western Han, there was a man named Kuang Heng. He was born in a poor family. He liked reading books very much. He needed to work at daytime, so he had to read books during night. But his family was too poor to buy a candle. One night, he found his neighbor had candles, but the light couldn’t go through his room. He dug a small hole in the wall so that he could read books with the light.
西汉时期，有一位名叫匡衡的人。他出身贫寒，却钟爱阅读。由于白天需要劳作，他只能在夜晚读书。但是他家境贫困，买不起蜡烛。有一天晚上，他发现邻居有蜡烛，但光线无法透过他的房间。于是他在墙壁上挖了一个小洞，以便借着邻居的灯光读书。
From that day, he read books every night until his neighbor’s light went out. However, he finished reading all his books and there were no books for him to read. So he decided to work for a rich man without payment.
从那天起，每个夜晚，他都在灯光下埋头读书，直到邻居的灯熄灭。 然而，当他读完家中所有书籍，再无新书可读时。他决定前往一位富商家中无偿劳作。
The rich man asked, “Why don’t you want the money ” Kuang Heng said, “Because I only want to borrow your books.” The rich man agreed. Kuang Heng read the books one by one. Finally, he became a great scholar.
富商问道：“你为什么不要钱？”匡衡说：“因为我只想借读你的书。”富商欣然同意。匡衡一本一本地读着那些书籍。最终，他成为了一位伟大的学者。
用英语讲好中国故事四——毛遂自荐
In the Warring States period, the state of Qin besieged the capital of the state of Zhao. Prince Pingyuan of Zhao went to Chu to ask for help. He wanted to select 20 capable people to go with him. But he could only find 19. Then, a man named Mao Sui came and volunteered. Prince Pingyuan looked at him doubtfully. But Mao Sui was very confident and said, “If you give me the chance, I’ll prove myself.” So Prince Pingyuan let Mao Sui join his team.
战国时期，秦国围攻了赵国的都城。赵国平原君前去楚国求援，他想选拔20名才华横溢之士同行。然而，他只找到了19个人。就在此时，一个名叫毛遂的人前来自荐并志愿加入。平原君犹豫不决地审视着他。但毛遂自信满满地说道：“若您能给我机会，我必将证明自己的价值。” 于是平原君让毛遂加入他的队伍。
As they arrived in Chu, Prince Pingyuan talked with the king of Chu. However, the kingof Chu hesitated to help Zhao. Mao Sui stood upand approached him with a sword in his hand. Then he told the king why he should help Zhao and the benefits he could get from doing so. The king was shocked and agreed to send troops.当他们抵达楚国时，平原君与楚王进行了深入交谈。然而，楚王对是否援助赵国犹豫不定。毛遂拔剑站起来，径直走向楚王。接着，他详细说明了为何楚国应该帮助赵国，以及帮助赵国会给楚国带来的好处。楚王大为震惊，最终同意派兵相助。
Finally Zhao defeated Qin with the help of Chu. And Mao Sui became a hero of the state. 最终，赵国在楚国的帮助下击败了秦国。毛遂因此成为了赵国的英雄。
