“This one is a species of Nanhaipotamon that I caught in a mountainous area,” said Zhang, pointing to a bright-colored crab moving its amusing eyes around. “You can see it just shed its shell.” There is also a row of empty bottles and jars in Zhang’s room to store his specimens ( 标 本 ). “I can notice the small differences between two shrimps, and then I take them back to my room for further observation,” said Zhang.
It is the microscope his father bought him that makes the bedroom look more like a mini biology lab than anything else. It’s a place where Zhang can devote himself to identifying or observing the specimens of shrimps and crabs day and night. “Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.
“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone ( 腔 调 ) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase the business.
The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. A recent study from psychologist Sarah Kucker at Oklahoma State University suggests shyness can influence a child’s performance in language tests, depending on the level of social interaction (互动交流) required to complete the test.
Shy children tend to keep quiet in everyday life, including communicating with others. The study points out that the behavior can make judging a child’s language abilities more challenging since shy children find it harder to verbally engage with testers (that’s when children are required to speak out) than during less socially demanding tests.
The research by Sarah Kucker was published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, and involved 122 children between the ages of 17 and 42 months. Each child underwent a series of three language tasks that required different levels of social interaction: a looking task, a pointing task, and a verbal task. In each, the children were asked to find a known object from a set of pictures. Parents reported their child’s shyness in an early childhood behavior survey.
The results showed significant differences in children’s performance across the tasks depending on shyness. Shyer children did worse in the verbal task than the less-shy children of the same age. However, all children performed well in the pointing task independent of their shyness level. The looking task produced more complicated results, meaning that shyer children were occasionally more accurate (精确的) but less likely to respond.
“A child’s shyness could strongly impact how they will behave in language tasks,” said Kucker. “When children are given language ability tests, testers should take into account the child’s shyness level, perhaps using tasks that are less socially demanding for them, such as pointing tasks instead of verbal ones.”
Kucker believes recognizing the impact of shyness will help to ensure language tests are more effective and provide a better understanding of a child’s language development.

M: Of course. I think everyone who has a dream should read it. Before I read it, I even thought
about giving up my dream of becoming an artist. But now I know I should keep doing art.

M: Jennifer, what’s your plan for the school summer vacation
W: My grandparents really miss me. They want me to spend one or two weeks with them in the
country this summer. So I’ll go to visit them first.
After I return, I think I’ll do some volunteer work.
M: Will you consider volunteering for a program in Kathmandu, Nepal
W: No. I can’t afford a trip abroad. What about you
M: That’s my plan for this summer.
W: What will you do in this program
M: Well, it aims to provide quality education to some of Nepal’s children. Volunteers will work
alongside local teachers to help with subjects such as English, math, science, history, and
geography.
W: So what subjects are you most interested in teaching
M: Geography.
W: When will you begin to work there
M: On July 10th. And I’ll volunteer for two whole weeks there. After that, I’ll do some traveling
around the country.
W: Well. I wish you a great time there!

M: Hi, Ella. This is Henry. Since you’re not at home today, I’ll just leave you a message. Last
week you told me you were looking for a babysitting job. I have some good news for you. The
couple Mr. and Mrs. Smith living near my house are looking for a babysitter now. They’re both
cooks and they have to work at night. Neither of them can take care of their one-year-old baby girl.
She’s really lovely. I’m sure you’ll love the little girl. If you do the work, you only need to take
care of her and play with her from 6:30 pm to 9: 30 pm. Since you’ve looked after babies before,
I’m sure you can do the job well. The couple say they can pay 20 dollars an hour. If you’re
interested in it, please call me back. I’ll introduce you to them. Believe me, they are very easy to
