Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.
Recite and repeat in conversation.
When you hear a person’s name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.
Ask the other person to recite and repeat.
You can let other people help you remember their names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names.
Admit you don’t know.
Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say, “I’m working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again ”
Use associations.
Link each person you meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note: “Vicki Cheng — tall, black hair.” To reinforce your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.
Limit the number of new names you learn at one time.
When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later.
Go early.
Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time. That’s fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others — an automatic review for you.
1.How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names
A.They will be moved. B.They will be annoyed.
C.They will be delighted. D.They will be discouraged.
2.To reinforce the association you made between the person and something interesting, you may .

Eric Ashby’s fascination with nature began at an early age. His first article, Bird Photography: an Ideal Hobby for Boys, was published when he was just 16 and illustrated with photographs that he’d taken.
His interest in photography had been sparked four years earlier in 1930, when the wildlife photographer Cherry Kearton came to Southsea, Ashby’s home town, to present a show of his work. The 12-year-old Ashby saw the show and immediately started saving his pocket money to buy a camera for filming wildlife in the nearby New Forest. But Ashby’s films did not reach the public due to the World War II.
In 1953, he and his wife Eileen moved to Badger (獾) Cottage, in the heart of the New Forest. It was here that Ashby perfected the techniques that would make him famous through the new medium of television. His patience and technical knowledge allowed him to film badgers at their holes during daylight — the first time this behaviour had ever been captured on camera.
In 1961, at the age of 43, Ashby finally got his big break, when the BBC showed his 45-minute film The Unknown Forest. The film had taken four years to make and received a very positive response from viewers. The nature writer Richard Mabey was hugely impressed and remarked that the film “changed the standards for home-grown wildlife documentaries”.
After the film was shown, he was given the nickname “the silent watcher”. The nickname not only stuck, it became the title of his second film.
In 1963, Ashby made the first British wildlife film in colour, although it took four years before The Major appeared in its full glory, as the BBC did not broadcast in colour until 1967.
He was awarded the Royal Geographical Society’s Cherry Kearton Medal and Award in 1975 and in 1992 received an MBE. He died, aged 85, on 6 February 2003, but his legacy lives on.
4. What does the underlined word “sparked” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Revived. B. Inspired. C. Assessed. D. Increased.
5. What might lead to the success of his 1961 film
A. Unique scenes and the new medium TV. B. Animal knowledge and new standards.
C. The positive response from viewers. D. The recommendation from a nature writer.
6. What can be learned from Paragraph 6
A. The Major took Ashby 4 years to make. B. The Major was not broadcast on BBC.
C. The Major was another success for Ashby. D. The Major was the first color film in the UK.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. An Award Winner B. A Silent Watcher C. The Life of a Badger D. The Story in a Forest

Is there a friend of yours who always sings out of tune but never realizes it Don’t blame them-they may have amusia (失歌症), a disorder in the brain.
Apart from singing out of tune, people with amusia may also find it hard to recognize music they’ve heard before without the help of song lyrics. Amusia can range from difficulty in recognizing melodies to a total inability to distinguish between different musical notes, according to Live Science. However, people with amusia can recognize common environmental sounds as well as the high and low sounds in human voices, meaning that this inability can be specifically related to music.
In many cases, people who have amusia are born with it, as 46 percent of these individuals’ relatives were found to have similar conditions, according to a 2017 study. Brain imaging shows that their brains receive and respond to music pitch information, but it is not reaching conscious awareness, meaning that the mind can’t understand the information.
Scientists at the University of Otago in New Zealand also think that amusia is related to people’s spatial processing skills. They invited people with amusia, musicians and students from non-musical backgrounds to perform a task related to spatial imagination. They were asked to judge whether pairs of images are the same object rotated (旋转) or mirror images.
The result showed that the amusia group made more mistakes than the other two groups. Amusia might be related to the way the brain stores information about the high and low notes in melodies, according to the study.
Although those who aren’t confident about their singing skills often say they are “tone-deaf”, people with amusia only make up about1. 5 percent of the population, as estimated by the2017 study. “Like dyslexics (诵读困难者) can learn how to read, those with amusia should be able to improve their ability to recognize tones if they start early enough,” Isabelle Peretz, a professor of psychology from the University of Montreal in Canada, told Live Science.
8.According to the article, what do people with amusia find easy to do
A.Recognizing melodies. B.Recognizing tunes.
C.Identifying human voices. D.Distinguishing between different musical notes
9.What did the 2017 study tell us about amusia
A.Amusia is a result of brain damage.
B.Amusia is common among children.
C.Many individuals with amusia are born with it.
D.Those who are tone-deaf often suffer from amusia.
10.What did the study by scientists at the University of Otago show
A.People with amusia have strong spatial imagination skills.
B.People with amusia struggle to judge the shape of images
C.Amusia may be related to one’s level of music education.
D.Amusia may be linked with how the brain stores note information.
11.How can people with amusia improve their musical ability, according to Peretz
A.Learn how to read earlier in life. B.Start to explore and learn music early.
C.Seek medical treatment. D.Sing frequently with friends.

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been ” And the boy --- who could not have been more than 7 or 8 years old ---replied, “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately.”
This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school.
The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it is certainly different. Children as they once were on longer exists. Why
Human development is based not only on innate biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social route to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information indiscriminately to all viewers alike, be they children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.
12.According to the author, feeling depressed is ________.
A.a sure sign of a mental problem in children
B.a mental state present in all humans, including children
C.something that can’t be avoided in children’s mental development
D.something hardly to be expected in a young child
13.Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world _________.
A.through connection with society B.gradually and under guidance
C.naturally without being taught D.through watching television
14.What does the author think of communication through print for children
A.It enables children to gain more social information
B.It develops children’s interest in reading and writing.
C.It helps children to read and write well.
D.It can control what children are to learn.
15.What does the author think of the change in today’s children
A.He feels their adultlike behavior is so funny
B.He thinks the change worth our attention
C.He considers it a rapid development
D.He is extremely upset about it

It happens all the time—you are standing on a bus, listening to music, when you feel someone’s breath on the back of your neck. You think to yourself: Is this person getting too close to me The answer is yes. 16 But how big is this space
According to a new study, the size of the space is different for different people, 17 , reported Los Angeles Times. In the study, researchers from University College of London asked volunteers to hold their hands at different distances from their face. They then gave them an electric shock on their hands while measuring how often the volunteers blinked (眨眼). The more they blinked, 18 .
The results among volunteers were a little different, but the average personal space was 20 to 40 centimeters. Researchers also found that the more anxious a person was, the larger their personal space was because they were more sensitive.
Besides psychological factors, 19 . For example, a person who grew up in a country that hugs a lot has less of a problem with strangers getting too close than a person who grew up in one with more distance between people.
20 . “If you are chatting with some one in your living room, you won’t have a large safety space at all,” explained researcher Gian Domenico Iannetti. “But if you are walking through a dangerous area, then that will be much bigger.” Sadly, sometimes people just don’t understand the idea of personal space and keep getting into yours. Whenever that happens, rather than trying to step backwards, researchers suggest that you “create a new space” by turning to wave at someone passing by or to get something out of your bag.
A.Everyone has a sense of personal space
B.it shows that they are worried about their hands
C.the more of a threat they felt the shock was to their face
D.but generally it is between 20 to 40 centimeters in front of the face
E.culture is also thought to be able to change your personal space
F.People’s senses of personal space also depend on the environments they are in
G.It is clear that people’s senses of personal space are considered to be very important

Once in the summer holidays, a brother and a sister, Sammy and Marie, visited their grandparents on their farm. Sammy took his slingshot (弹弓) to play in the woods. He practiced hard for many days but all his efforts were in vain. No matter how much he tried, he could never hit the target.
At lunchtime, Grandma called out, ”Sammy, it’s lunchtime!” Getting a little disappointed, he headed back for the lunch. While walking back, Sammy noticed his grandma’s pet. It was a cute, little duck. Out of excitement he took his slingshot and aimed at the duck. This time, his shot hit the target and it hit the poor duck on its head and killed it. He was shocked and frightened at the same time.
In the extreme fear, he hid the dead duck in the pile of woods. Marie, his younger sister, had seen it all from the window but she decided not to confront him.
The next day, Grandma said, “Marie, let’s wash the dishes.” Hearing this, Marie immediately said, “But Grandma, Sammy told me he wanted to help you do the household chores.” As soon as she said this, she turned to Sammy and whispered, “Remember the duck ” Sammy got anxious, knowing that his sister knew his secret about the duck. If he did not obey her, she would tell their grandparents about it. So without uttering a single word, he did the dishes. Later, in the evening, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go for fishing. On hearing this, Grandma said, ”I am sorry but I need Marie to stay with me and help make a supper.” Marie turned to Grandma and said, “Well, that’s all right. Sammy told me he wanted to help you." She again whispered to Sammy, “Remember the duck ” Hearing this, Sammy couldn’t say a word, just standing there angrily. So Marie went with her grandfather for fishing and poor Sammy had to stay with his grandma.

After Marie took advantage of Sammy several times, he finally could not stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and admitted that he had killed the duck. Grandma knelt down smiling, gave him a hug and said, “My dear child, I know. I was standing right near the window when it all happened. But because I love you, I forgave you. I was wondering how long you would let Marie take advantage of you and how long you would admit your mistake.” Sammy apologized to his grandma and hugged her once again.
Later that day Marie went back from fishing with her grandfather. Grandma called Marie to come to her and disclosed the whole truth, and meantime blamed her for taking advantage of her brother. Marie also felt ashamed and regretful, so she said sorry to Grandma and her brother, promising not to do so again. She would help with the chores at home and play with Sammy. Therefore, Sammy and Marie had wonderful summer holidays and both of them learned a lot from this trip. So it is important to admit your mistake, apologize and seek others’ forgiveness.
