 Unit 5 What an adventure!
【Step 1题源研读·探寻主题提升思维】
Down the Rapids顺流而下
“Forward...stop! Forward...brace!” shouts rafting instructor Ronny as we careen towards the seething rapids. Only minutes ago, he’s had to berate our team of four for lack of coordination. But now, we’re like a well-oiled machine. Boot-camp style, Ronny barks out instructions and we respond instantaneously, plunging our paddles into the water to power forward, then leaping to one side to avoid capsizing. We’re navigating the torrents that rush downstream from the Marmore Falls, one of Europe’s highest waterfalls. They’re found in the central region of Umbria, dubbed Italy’s green heart. It’s dominated by verdant hills that roll as far as the eye can see. It’s heaven for hiking and cycling, but here in the Nerina Valley, where the falls are fed by the Velino River and plummet down a cliff into the Nera River below, water takes centre stage. The starting point of today’s rafting experience, offered by local outfitter Rafting Marmore, is beneath the last of the waterfall’s three tiers, right beside the thundering cascade. These giant steps are carved out of a densely forested cliff face, where mist hovers fog like among the canopy. It surges over the railings, so that we’re wet before we even reach the water. Much of the water from the Velino River is now rerouted into a hydroelectric plant, meaning the falls are, most of the time, nothing more than a gentle stream. But to the delight of visitors and thrill-seekers alike, twice a day the entire waterway is once again directed to plummet over the cliff. When in full flow, the pounding water is a sublime spectacle. This makes paddling strenuous, but the effort is rewarded by sudden plunges over rapids, which fling water into our faces and make us grip the raft for fear of being jolted overboard. By the time we’ve finished, my arms ache, but I find myself wanting more of the rush. At the top of the falls, I’m rewarded with a dazzling rainbow; not even the Romans could have manufactured this. —National Geographic (同源高考:2022年新高考Ⅰ卷B篇阅读选自本期刊)

单元话题微写作——四种模式之读后续写
60-year-old Richard Olsen had retired from his work. He was very interested in adventure and hunting. This time he hunted on a land near Watford City, N.D., in the sparsely (稀少地) populated western portion of the state. In the cold winter, he tried a new spot and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked (艰苦跋涉) more than half a mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.
Eyes fixed on the horizon in expectation of another pheasant (野鸡) taking flight, Richard stepped on a thin crust (外壳) of snow on a canal. It collapsed and dropped him four feet to the bottom.
Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Richard was suddenly picking up a lot of speed. His left leg hurt first, and he lay on his side to reach for his shotgun (猎枪), unloaded it and used it as a crutch (拐杖). He spent an hour and a half climbing the earthen canal backward to keep pressure off his bad leg. When he was partly up, he slipped and slid back down, because one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Richard told himself that if he didn’t get himself out of the canal, he wasn’t going to have a very good night.
Richard worked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. Richard immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred at about 2 p.m., and it was nearly 5 p.m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.
Richard focused on crawling to safety. Even with his gun’s support, hopping (单足跳跃) was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was stubborn and sure that he must be persistent. He was in exhaustion and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped below zero overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Richard’s dogs had been playing in the field and eventually came up to him.

High Art and Streetwear, a Fruitful Combination 高雅艺术与街头时尚的完美结合
When Pacsun, the brand known for selling skate and surf wear at malls announced that it would release a clothing collection in partnership with the Metropolitan Museum of Art(the Met), some reactions could be summed up as: Why The type of laid-back West Coast lifestyle associated with Pacsun since its beginnings in California in the 1980s seemed at odds with the interests of the Met, an Upper East Side museum where saltwater could damage the artworks. Not to mention: Was there even an audience of skaters and surfers with an eye for Renoir Apparently, yes. After releasing three collections with the Met, Pacsun will release a fourth. The new line contains 25 pieces, ranging from $25 to $90, and is inspired by the museum’s collection of Greek and Roman statues. The items, sold on Pacsun’s website and at its stores, include a mesh long-sleeve shirt printed with the “Marble Head of an Athlete”($35)and a black puffer jacket embossed with the “Marble Statue Group of the Three Graces” ($80). Merchandise from earlier collections has featured artwork of New York City landmarks and paintings by artists like Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Vincent van Gogh. Pacsun’s partnership with the Met is the latest step in a larger shift for the company formally known as Pacific Sunwear of California, which filed for bankruptcy in 2016. In recent years Pacsun has attempted to move away from the type of sun-dappled leisure it had come to epitomize. Now it is focusing on streetwear and using apparel partnerships to resonate with its predominantly young customers. Some of those partnerships, like the collection Pacsun released with Fear of God, a cult streetwear label, have been more obvious than others, like its line with Playboy magazine. “I think that feeling of being surprised that we’ve done something like this is a real positive,” Brieane Olson, Pacsun’s chief executive, said of its wide-ranging collaborations. —The New York Times (同源高考:2023年全国乙卷完形填空选自本报)

Braving the Waters乘风破浪
Joel Boyers and his fiancée, Melody Among, were heading home from the Nashville airport after she earned her helicopter’s pilot license when he received a frantic call from a stranger in Pennsylvania. The caller told Boyers that her brother and his two daughters were trapped on their roof in Waverly, 60 miles from Nashville. They were surrounded by rising floodwaters caused by last August’s record-shattering rains and didn’t think they would survive. Desperate, the caller had Googled “Nashville helicopters” and Boyers’ company, Helistar Aviation, was the first to pop up. She pleaded, could Boyers please, please rescue her loved ones Boyers, 41, looked west toward Waverly and saw the storm clouds. “Ma’am,” he said, “no one will fly in this weather, and for good reason.” But even before he finished the sentence, Boyers knew they would go back up. “I’ve got a daughter myself,” Boyers says. He told the woman he’d see what he could see. He put the brother’s address into his phone, then he and Among, 30, drove back to the airport. Soon, they were in the air, unprepared for what they were about to see in Waverly. “As soon as I popped over the ridge, it was nothing but tan raging water below me,” he says. “There were two houses on fire. Cars in trees. Tons of debris. Any way debris could get caught; it was. No one was going to be able to swim in that.” Instead, people were clinging to anything that didn’t move—roofs, trees, poles. The flooding, which would eventually claim 20 lives and destroy more than 270 homes, also took out cell phone service, meaning Boyers couldn’t use his phone to pinpoint the house he was looking for. He flew on anyway. Maybe he’d get lucky. As Boyers steered, Among began searching for people stranded atop roofs, bridges—anywhere Boyers could land his chopper and get them onboard. One rescued man pointed to a teenager he’d seen clinging to a tree. The teen, soaking wet and exhausted, was barely out of the water. One hand clutched a tree limb, the other a dog she’d rescued earlier while both were being swept away in the current. —READER’S DIGEST (同源高考:2020年全国Ⅱ卷D篇阅读选自本期刊)

③我们应该让每个人都尽力去保护它。
We should make everyone try their best to protect it.
④当处理废物时,我们不应该把它倒入海洋。

Step 2 句式升级
⑤将①中的两个句子合并为一个含动词-ing形式作定语的句子。
World Oceans Day, falling on June 8th, is aimed at raising awareness of ocean conservation.
⑥用部分倒装改写②中的句子。
Not only does ocean offer us sufficient food, but it also maintains the balance of nature.

Want a glimpse of dystopia Visit the self-service checkouts
 想看一眼反乌托邦吗 访问自助服务收银台
I’ve wailed before about the proliferation of self-checkout machines. But I will do so again, because my mood darkens every time I visit my local big supermarket. I first honoured the place with my business about 20 years ago. Back then there were about two dozen staffed checkouts, in those days of innocence before the death march of progress gathered pace. A handful of self-checkouts appeared; a handful of human ones vanished. At first we saw them as harmless novelties. They were never all in operation, and those that were rarely worked properly. The whole caper seemed to involve as many staff supervising machines as could have been operating a battery of proper tills. But we indulged the management, bless them. They’ve got to try these things, haven’t they Then came more of them, and ever fewer human tills. A zero-sum game. It remained the case that some machines were out of action and the remainder invariably had a glitch in store for you.Only the other day I had a torrid time with some pitiful, dried-out geraniums on a three-for-£5 offer. They wouldn’t scan. I got them for nothing in the end, but they all died anyway. I asked the poor woman working there what, in the name of all that is good and holy, they were playing at. “It’s terrible,” she whispered, shrugging in despair. “Old people, disabled people...” Her voice trailed off as someone shouted that something wasn’t scanning, and off she went. In the distance, tucked away at the far end next to the freezers, the three remaining checkout people beavered away, as if for old time’s sake. Soon there will surely be just one human-operated till. You’ll probably have to book in advance to use it. And then, one dark day, the game will be up. There will be none. They will only exist in science museums as working exhibits, operated by actors, for our grandchildren to point at and giggle. —TheGuardian (同源高考:2022年全国乙卷七选五选自本报)
金榜原创 1.What can we know about the self-checkout machines in the supermarket (D) A.They have caused the number of customers drop. B.They have completely replaced staffed checkouts. C.They don’t need to be managed by staff. D.Not all of them work well. 2.Which of the following does the writer agree with (A) A.The woman couldn’t help the customers. B.The remaining checked people do nothing. C.The human-operated till will disappear. D.The progress is harmful. 长难句分析 I asked the poor woman working there what, in the name of all that is good and holy, they were playing at. 分析:本句是主从复合句。working there 是动词-ing形式作定语,修饰woman。what引导宾语从句,作asked的直接宾语。在what引导的从句中,插入了in the name of all that is good and holy。in the name of表示“以……的名义”。that引导定语从句,修饰all。

Translator builds bridges between cultures
译者在不同文化之间架起桥梁
For more than four decades, Li Yao has devoted himself to introducing Australian literature to Chinese readers through his translations, hoping that every page will be an opportunity to foster intercultural understanding that will develop into unbreakable bonds and connect hearts and minds across the ocean. The 77-year-old is a trailblazer who has translated more than 40 books related to Australian literature, history and culture into Chinese, including the works of Nobel Prize winner Patrick White, aboriginal writer Alexis Wright and Colleen McCullough, who wrote The Thorn Birds, a global best-seller. Li said his work derives from a passion for literature, especially stories from Australia. “At the time I started translating, Australian literature was still an untouched area in China. I think it is both a mission and a responsibility for me to bring Australian literature to China, and my writer friends want me to translate their works into Chinese. So I feel obligated to do this,” he said. “Literary translation is a journey full of hardships, which requires unwavering dedication despite the meager rewards and often thankless toil.” Through his work, Chinese readers are able to explore the complex lives of an ordinary Australian couple amid the vast, unforgiving landscape of the bush, the ancient legends and myths of the indigenous people in the fictional Carpentaria of northern Australia, and an Australian man of Chinese descent who embarks on a poignant journey to rediscover his roots and understand the profound impact of his ancestry on his own identity. As an avid translator, Li maintains a busy schedule: In addition to teaching translation at Peking University, he spends most of his time translating a novel called Edenglassie by Melissa Lucashenko. Though the country’s literature is probably less well-known to Chinese readers than works from other parts of the Western world, Li said Australia’s unique history, landscape and way of life provide a different perspective from which to observe another culture and society. —CHINADAILY. Dear pen pal, let’s meet 68 years on
亲爱的笔友,我们68年后见
More than a thousand letters had passed between them during a friendship lasting seven decades. But Patsy Gregory and Carol-Anne Krause had never met since becoming pen pals in 1955. That omission has been finally put right with Mrs Gregory, from Hoghton Lancashire visiting Mrs Krause’s home in South Carolina. They were both 12 when they were introduced through Girl Guides with Mrs Krause, a member of the US sister organisation, Girl Scouts. Their trans-Atlantic friendship was sustained by letters and latterly by email and social media as they shared their lives. They finally met when Mrs Gregory’s three children arranged for her to travel to Conway, South Carolina, as an 80th birthday gift. Mrs Gregory said that in the early days of their correspondence it would have been a pipe dream to go to America because you just could not afford it. She added,“When I finally met her it was the strangest feeling as we just walked up to each other in the most natural way.We knew every bit about each other like best friends do. We have been there for each other nearly all our lives.” She said she cannot think of not being in touch with Mrs Krause, who she calls Cappy, adding,“She is a part of me.” The pair’s first tentative letters were in pencil, touching on their respective knitting projects, the books they were reading and their teachers. But as they entered their teens, their letters were soon filled with the pop stars of the day—both were fans of the Beatles. Mrs Gregory, a Mail reader of 42 years, recalled: And we discussed boyfriends! I told her about when I first met my husband Keith—he’s 81 now—and she told me about who she had met. She and daughter Steph stayed for nine days in South Carolina this summer, spending most of the time with Mrs Krause and her family. —DailyMail (同源高考:2022年全国乙卷完形填空选自本报)

单元话题微写作——四种模式之读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had entered a new school, so he had no friends yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.
At school, Asad could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Asad quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar ” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Fahad and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad’s as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad. At least he could afford the lunch now. However, another voice popped up, urging him to give it back to Fahad. “I should never keep the wallet at the cost of my honesty!” Asad convinced himself. Once he made up his mind, he accelerated his pace and caught him up. “Fahad, it’s your wallet and I found it on the bench.” Taking over the wallet, Fahad stared into Asad’s eyes with a puzzled look on his face.
Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving it back ” He even looked into his wallet, obviously doubtful about Asad’s act. Calm and patient, Asad explained, “I had originally wanted to keep it secret as a punishment for your arrogance, but being honest matters more to me.” Hearing what Asad said, Fahad felt his face burning with shame. He bent his head, thanking Asad and apologizing to the classmates around for calling them losers. “And the lunch is on me. You all are my friends!” Fahad announced.
