Relic guardians
1 After packing some bread and a water bottle, Shan Zhizheng and his wife start up their motorcycle and head off to a cultural relic site. Their starting point is the pastoral and farming landscape of Wenquan County in northwest China.
2 Known as a museum without walls, Wenquan County is home to nearly 260 cultural relic sites under various levels of protection, including tombs, cliff paintings and ruins, which provide materials for researching the history of ancient northern nomads (游牧民)and tribes.
3 Shan and his wife Yuan Qin are responsible for protecting one particular relic site that spans about 8 square kilometers. Once a week, the couple patrols over 200 ancient tombs built from the Warring States Period to the Han Dynasty. Their relic protection routine usually includes walking around the site to look for footprints and motorcycle tracks, keeping records of the tombs, and updating the local cultural relic authorities in a timely manner.
4 Shan has been working as a field conservator for some five years. However, his bond with cultural relics goes back much further. In 1999, his family was assigned a piece of waste and covering 20 hectares, with the aim of working it as farmland. Quite by chance,Shan found two saddleshapedmill stones in a field that he was farming. Although he noticed abrasion (磨损) marks on the objects, he didn’t know they were cultural relics. Thereafter,Shan found several stone tools, bits of pottery and other cultural relics on the wasteland and placed them in his home.
5 In 2008, Shan invited experts from the Wenquan Cultural Relic Protection Bureau to his home to identify the “relics”he had found. Experts estimated that the millstones might belong to the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and they may provide some insight into the production and living conditions of locals during the period.
6 Although Shan takes delight in his daily work, there are still many challenges in the role. Sometimes, the husbandandwifeteam has to trek through valleys and rivers as their motorcycle can’t cope with the steeper slopes. However, none of these difficulties can undermine Shan’s love for cultural relic preservation.

A day in the clouds
行在云端
1 The air is thin and we have to rest several times on the short hike from camp. To our left, snowcoveredmountains disappear into clouds that seem almost close enough to touch. On the plain in front of us, we can just make out a herd of graceful animals. This is why we’re here—to observe Tibetan antelopes.
2 Tibetan antelopes live on the plains of Tibet,Xinjiang, and Qinghai. Watching them move slowly across the green grass, I’m struck by their beauty. I’m also reminded of the danger they are in. They are being hunted illegally for their valuable fur.
3 My guide is Zhaxi, a villager from Changtang. He works at the Changtang NationalNature Reserve. The reserve is a shelter for the animals and plants of northwesternTibet. To Zhaxi, the land is sacred and protecting wildlife is a way of life. “We’re not trying to save the animals,”he says. “Actually, we’re trying to save ourselves.”
4 The 1980s and 1990s were bad times for the Tibetan antelope. The population of the Tibetan antelope dropped by more than 50 percent. Hunters were shooting antelopes to make profits. Their habitats were becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built.
5 In order to save this species from extinction, the Chinese government placed it under national protection. Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains. The measures were effective. The antelope population has recovered and in June 2015, the Tibetan antelope was removed from the endangered species list. The government, however, does not intend to stop the protection programs, since the threats to the Tibetan antelope have not yet disappeared.
6 In the evening, I drink a cup of tea and watch the stars. I think about the antelopes and what Zhaxi told me. Much is being done to protect wildlife, but if we really want to save the planet, we must change our way of life. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife and to our planet.

Aside from martial arts, he got to know about the country through photos and videos. After a year of learningChinese, Darrin arrived in Kaifeng, Henan Province, as a language student at HenanUniversity. The reason why Darrin chose to apply to Henan University was that the ShaolinTemple, which is widely known for its martial arts, is located in Henan. I was told that the martial art is more than the powerful movements, like self-defense,it is about a way of life, which is full of Chinese philosophy,”says Darrin. Of all the different types of Chinese martial arts, Darrin has been focused on learning and practicing Tai Chi.
4 Since 2017, Darrin has participated in martial art competitions, especially Tai Chi,and won a number of awards. He says that Tai Chi helps him become strong, healthy, stay in good shape and develop excellent concentration.
5 Besides Tai Chi, Darrin also learned to perform Yuju Opera, a popular local art form, which also has a large national fan base. Yuju Opera, which originated and thrived (蓬勃发展) in central China’s Henan Province, is among the top five traditional opera genres in China. With a history dating back to the Qing Dynasty, Yuju Opera is known for its melodic singing, dazzling martial art movements and stories, which are based on folk tales, especially those about brave heroes who are loyal, honest and patriotic.
6 It’s been about five years since Darrin left his home country, and he has been showing his family, through video calls, his life in China and two of his favorite things he has learned: Tai Chi and Yuju Opera.
