How to Code a Rollercoaster
This is a picture book about coding ( 编 程 ). This book does a good job of introducing and explaining what code is, how computers understand it, and introducing common coding terms. The book is part of the popular “Girls Who Code” series, but it is intended for younger readers. (Penguin Random House, $17.99)
Marble Circuit
With brightly colored pieces, Marble Circuit doesn’t present as a difficult logic (逻辑) game — but don’t be too confident. After deciding on a card, players must put pieces and allow the right number of glass balls to run into each space at the bottom of the board. Because it requires greater ability to reason correctly than some other kinds of puzzles do, Marble Circuit is suggested for the over-8 crowd. (MindWare, $24.95)
Babu Set of 3 - Roller, Stacker, Rocker
As a classic block-building toy, Babu requires players to balance the blocks on a curved (弯曲的) base, try out different styles of towers or make special cars. (MindWare, $59.95)
Botzees
Kids can follow directions or use their imaginations to build a robot out of the 130 blocks, and then command it to dance, sing, drum and light up with an app on a smart device. Though the robot attracts younger testers, kids aged 5 and up enjoy the toy’s advanced features better. (Pai Technology,
$99.99)
What do we know about How to Code a Rollercoaster
A. It’s a difficult coding book. B. It costs no more than $15.00.
C. It’s a coding book easy to read. D. It is the first book of its series.
What skills does Marble Circuit develop
A. Logical skills. B. Reading skills.
C. Coding skills. D. Computer skills.
If Jackson is interested in robots, which gift will he love
A. How to Code a Rollercoaster. B. Marble Circuit.
C. Babu Set of 3 - Roller, Stacker, Rocker. D. Botzees.

Kyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg (Lunchtime) Running Group were relaxing on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few slower ones. The Penn co-workers and other community members meet three days a week for a 30-minute running and sometimes an informal lecture. That’s right — during some runs, one of them gives a talk with topics changing from the brain to Bitcoin. Not your normal exercise chatter.
Last Saturday, it would not be their normal run. Something unusual happened when a man ran quickly past them. “How fast!” Cassidy told the others admiringly. Then he discovered why the runner was running so quickly when another man ran by, shouting, “Help! Catch the thief ! He took my phone and laptop!”
At that time, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, following the man down the streets of Philadelphia until he quickly hid into a construction site (建筑工地). The runners began to go different ways. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the man off while the others wandered around the neighborhood, hoping he had thrown away what he had stolen.
No luck. So they decided to ask the locals whether they’d seen the guy. When they knocked on the door of a house, they found the man had already come out from the construction site — and was hiding behind a bush by that very house. As the owner opened the door, the man ran out from behind the bush and right into the arms of a campus policeman, who had joined shortly behind the runners.
Running is usually a useless sport. But sometimes it can be useful, and here was one of those examples.
Why did the man run so quickly
A. He had stolen from somebody. B. He had a great gift for running.
C. He wanted to catch up with others. D. He tried to break the group’s record.
What did Cassidy do to catch the man
A. He caught him on the way. B. He wandered in the neighborhood.
C He ran around the site to cut him off. D. He followed him into a construction site.
In what way was the running on that Saturday special
A. A new member joined the group. B. One of the runners gave a speech.
C. Some policemen followed the group. D. The runners happened to catch a thief.
What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To praise the campus policeman. B. To show running can be useful.
C. To warn there is danger everywhere. D. To encourage others to give a helping hand.

According to a new report in Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, the number of online posts related to the circulation(流通) of used goods in 2022 increased by 814 percent year on year. Instead of buying useless things, people are changing towards using secondhand goods and replacing underused or unused objects. This trend is picking up in the country.
Since the summer of 2022, a 26-year-old Shanghai citizen named Chen Jiaorong has been walking along Julu Road in Shanghai’s downtown area once or twice a week, looking around and picking up “garbage” (垃圾). After her action was noticed online, she was described by others as a “stooper”.
The word “stoop” means to bend forward, but in the United States, it also refers to a platform or entrance stairway to a house. The term “stooper” was created in the US after a lot of people put their used or underused belongings in front of their doorsteps to be taken away for free by those in need. Later, “stooping” was used to mean “picking up abandoned goods and recycling them”.
As the first “stooper” in China, Chen had her own way. She picked unused goods to help find suitable new owners for some items. When she found such abandoned (被抛弃的) goods, she put a pair of eyeball-shaped stickers on them before publishing notes on her social media accounts, and guiding others to pick them up from the streets.
“‘Stooping’ is a new word in China, and some people even have no idea of it. Most of us still think secondhand goods are dirty and it is embarrassing to reuse them,” said Wu Kaisi, a well-known stooper in Guangzhou. “The slowing economy and the increasing cost of living have pushed the development of the used-goods industry. People are gradually advocating ( 提倡) a savings-based consumption ( 消 费 ) and environment-friendly lifestyle instead of blindly seeking for expensive consumption. Now, more young people are joining us.”
What does the report in paragraph 1 show
Selling used items is popular among young people.
Reusing secondhand goods has become a new trend.
People tend to buy products from social media platform.
The buying power of Chinese consumers is in decline.
What is the purpose of paragraph 3
A. To explain a fact. B. To make a prediction.
C. To make some concepts clear. D. To present an example.
How did Chen find owners for the abandoned goods
A. By organizing offline sales. B. By displaying them on Julu Road.
C. By putting up notices on the street. D. By posting related information online.
What does Wu Kaisi think of the lifestyle of stooping
A. It is embarrassing. B. It is worth advocating.
It slows down the development of economy.
It changes young people’s wasteful lifestyle
D
In southeastern Brazil, local fishers walk into dark waters in search of mullet (鲻鱼). On their own, it would be tricky to find the silvery fish. But the humans get help from an unusual partner—wild bottle-nose dolphins.
With nets in hand, the fishers patiently wait as their cetacean (鲸类的) partners drive the fish toward the shore. A signal from the dolphins—usually a deep dive—indicates when they should cast their nets. This fishing partnership has passed down through the generations, lasting for more than a century.
While researchers knew humans profited from this pairing, they couldn’t confirm whether it benefited the dolphins. Now, in a new study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers suggest cetaceans that hunt with humans have more chances to live than those that don’t. “Human-wildlife cooperation in general is an uncommon phenomenon (现象) at a global scale,” says Mauricio Cantor, a biologist at Oregon State University and leader of the study. “Usually humans gain the benefit, and nature pays the cost. But this interaction (互动) has been happening for
over 150 years.”
Fishers were more successful when they worked with the dolphins. When dolphins were present, the fishers were 17 times more likely to catch prey (猎物) and netted nearly four times more mullet when they timed their casting with the cetaceans signals. Eighty-six percent of all 4,955 mullet caught during the study period came from their interactions at the same time—when the allies organized their actions perfectly with one another.
The study also revealed dolphins hunting with humans had a 13 percent increase in survival rate over other dolphins. These cooperative ( 合作的) dolphins are more likely to stay near the shore reducing their chance of being caught in illegal fishing equipment. Besides, the dolphins can take some fish directly from the fishers harvest.
What do the first two paragraphs talk about concerning Brazilian fishers
They trick dolphins into fishing for them.
They have been training dolphins over a century.
They harvest more fish with dolphins’ help.
They throw the fishing nets when dolphins are on the top of water.
What does Mauricio Cantor’s research show
Nature supports human beings at no cost.
Fishers benefiting from cooperation with cetaceans is common.
Human-wildlife interaction is a new global trend.
Dolphins working with man have higher survival rate.
What does the underlined word “allies” refer to in paragraph 5
A. partners B. preys C. dolphins D. researchers
35 What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text
To call on the protection of sea creatures.
To support development in fishing research.
To show a unique human-dolphin relationship.
To encourage fishers to better draw on dolphins.

Eyesight plays a very important role in our daily life. Every waking moment, the eyes are working to see the world around us. Over forty percent of Americans worry about losing eyesight, but it's easy to include steps into our daily life to ensure healthy eyes. Here are five suggestions for a lifetime of healthy eyesight:
Schedule yearly exams.
36 Experts advise parents to bring babies 6 to 12 months of age to the doctor for a careful check. The good news is that millions of children now can have yearly eye exams and following treatment, including eyeglasses.
Protect against UV rays .
Long-term stay in the sun creates risk to your eyes. No matter what the season is, it’s extremely important to wear sunglasses. 37 Give your eyes a break.
Two-thirds of Americans spend up to seven hours a day using computers or other digital products. 38 Experts recommend that people practice the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.
39 .
As part of a healthy diet, eat more fruits and vegetables each day. Vitamins C and E help protect eyesight and promote eye health.
Practice safe wear and care of contact lenses.
Many Americans use contact lenses to improve their eyesight. While some follow the medical guidance for wearing contact lenses, many are breaking the rules and putting their eyesight at risk.
40
Otherwise: you may have problems such as red eyes, pain in the eyes, or a more serious condition.
Eat your greens.
Eye care should begin early in life.
They can properly protect your eyes.
Stay in good shape by taking more vitamins.
Parents usually don’t care about their own eyesight.
Always follow the doctor’s advice for appropriate wear.
This frequent eye activity increases the risk for eye tiredness.
Set Aside Time Each Day
Most of us can find 15 minutes or half an hour each day for some 41 regular activity. For example, one famous surgeon always 42 it a rule to spend at least 15 minutes on general reading before sleeping each day. 43 he went to bed at 10 p.m. or 2:30 a.m.
44 no difference.
Check Your Progress Through Pacing
Nearly all “speedy reading” courses have a “pacing” element — some timing 45 which lets you know how many words a minute you are reading. You can do this 46 by looking at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and noting down the page number you have 47 .
Check Your Understanding
Obviously there is little 48 in increasing your reading speed if you do not understand what you are reading. If you find you have lost the 49 of the story, reread the section.
Lightning Speed Exercise
Take four or five pages of an interesting book and read them as fast as you 50 can. Do not 51 about whether you understand or not. After a “lightning speed” of reading, you’ll find your “normal” speed has 52 .
Pay Attention to the Organization of an Article
Most paragraphs in an article have a(n) “ 53 sentence” which expresses the central ideas. The opening paragraph often suggests the general direction and content of the piece, while paragraphs that follow 54 or support the first. The 55 paragraph often summarizes the very essence of what has been said.
第二节(共 10 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(不多于 3 个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
Antarctica: the Last Continent
Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. It’s also the 56 (dry). With very little rainfall, Antarctica is technically a desert. Covering about 14 million square kilometers around the South Pole, it is the 57 (five) largest continent in the world. Antarctica holds about 90 per cent of the world’s ice, with most of its fresh water in a frozen state. Almost all of its surface
58 (cover) by a vast ice sheet. Strong winds 59 (drive) by gravity blow from the pole to the coastline, while other winds blow round the coast. It is difficult to imagine 60 more unwelcoming place.
Yet Antarctica is home to a variety of wildlife that has adapted 61 its extreme conditions. There are different types of penguins, flying birds, seals and whales. Most animals survive thanks to 62 (they) fat, 63 protects them from the cold. But the long Antarctic winter night, as well as the extreme cold and lack of rainfall, means that only a few primitive plants can grow.
Today, scientists from many countries travel to Antarctica 64 (study) its resources. In 1959,an agreement was signed by twelve countries, and since then many more countries have joined. The countries discuss 65 (topic) together, such as scientific cooperation and protecting the environment. They are committed to making sure that Antarctica should not become the scene or object of international conflict.

Once upon a time, there were two brothers who lived on two adjoining( 相 邻 的 ) farms. The elder brother is John and the younger one is Jack. One day they got a problem. It was the first serious disagreement in 40 years of farming side-by-side, sharing machines and using goods as needed. Clearly they could not get on well with each other like before and the long-time good relationship fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and then it grew into a big difference. Finally, they had a quarrel with each other followed by weeks of silence. No one was willing to be the first to accept mistakes or forgive each other.
One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox. “I’m a carpenter(木匠), and I am good at making chairs, tables, and even bridges. Now I’m looking for a few days’ work,” the man said. “Perhaps you would have some small projects and I could help. Could I help you ”
“Yes,” said John. “I do have a job for you. Look across the river at that farm. That’s my neighbor. In fact, it’s my younger brother! There was a piece of grassland between us. However, he recently brought his bulldozer(推土机) and now there is a river between us. Well, he may have done this to upset me on purpose, but I’ll do more. See the wood over there I want you to build a fence, an eight-foot-long fence, so I won’t need to see his place or his face anymore.”
The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the materials and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”
John had to go to town to buy something for his farm, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he left.
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The carpenter worked hard all that day.

第二节:The carpenter worked hard all that day. When John returned, the carpenter had just
finished his job. John was surprised because there was no fence at all. It was a beautiful bridge! A
bridge that connected one side of the river with the other side! He has never seen such a fine piece
of work in his life! And the neighbor, his younger brother Jack, was coming toward them with a
big smile on his face.
The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge. They met on it, taking each other’s hand.
They both admitted that they should have accepted their own mistakes and forgiven each other
earlier. After a while, they saw the carpenter picking up his own tools. John said, “Please stay here
to help me. I will pay you a lot of money.” The carpenter replied, “No, thanks. I still have
important bridges to build. I hope you will get on well with each other like before.”
