27-year-old Alexandra Knox, from Newcastle, moved in with Florence Smith after starting a master’s degree. Having quite possibly the largest age gap(差距) of any housemates in the UK, the pair say they hit it off and have a great time living together. They watch afternoon TV together, chat over a cup of tea, and do some of the cleaning together — “It’s no different from living with university students,” said Alexandra.
Florence has lived in the London home for over 50 years. Having retired from her job at the age of 70, and with her family living far away, she was left on her own. To avoid feeling lonely, she signed up for house sharing with Homeshare, the charity which paired her with Alexandra.
“Sharing your home is a great idea. Loneliness is horrible. Having someone else in the home makes a big difference. You don’t have to worry about falling over or hurting yourself. And more importantly, it’s lovely to have somebody to talk to during the day,” Florence said.
Florence added, “I was already 67 years old when my housemate was born, and when I told my friends about it, they thought it was strange. But the more they find out about it, the more they think it’s a very good idea.”
Alexandra said she was originally frightened by the idea of moving to London and living with an older person, but she thinks it has made her experience in the capital much better and has been a great way to cover sky-high rental costs. “It just didn’t seem like the normal thing to do, living with an older person,” she explained. “But now it’s like being with an old family friend. It gives me somewhere homely to come back to in the evening, which is great.”
What does the underlined part “hit it off ” in the first paragraph probably mean
A. Have quarrels. B. Get along well.
C. Be bored. D. Get used to new environments.
Why does Florence share her flat
A. To support students. B. To cut down on living costs.
C. To get someone to do housework. D. To have someone’s company.
26. What is Florence’s friends attitude to the housemates—Florence and Alexandra
A. Unclear. B. Disapproved. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.
What was Alexandra afraid of at first
A. The study pressure of her master’s degree. B. Living with an old woman in London.
C. The high rental costs in London. D. Being away from her family.

Australia officially listed koalas across its eastern coast as “endangered” on Friday. Conservationists(自然环境保护者) said koala populations had crashed in much of eastern Australia over the past two decades, warning that they were now sliding towards extinction.
The koala, a globally recognized symbol of Australia’s unique wildlife, had been listed as “vulnerable(易危)” on the eastern coast just a decade earlier. “We are taking unprecedented (史无前例的) action to protect the koala,” the Minister of Environment, Sussan Ley said, highlighting a recent government promise of Aus$50 million to protect and recover koala habitats.
Environmentalists welcomed the koalas’ new status (地位) but blamed Australia’s failure to protect the species so far. “Koalas have gone from no-listing to vulnerable to endangered within a decade. That is a shockingly fast decline,” said WWF-Australia conservation scientist Stuart Blanch. “Today’s decision is welcome, but it won’t stop koalas from sliding towards extinction unless it’s accompanied by stronger laws to protect their forest homes.”
Alexia Wellbelove of the Humane Society International said east coast koalas could be extinct by 2050 if no action was taken. “We can’t afford any more clearing,” she said. “The extinction of koalas does not have to happen,” she added, “we must stop allowing their homes to be cleared for mines, new houses, agricultural projects and industrial logging (伐木).”
Australia’s koalas had been living on a “knife edge” even before the “Black Summer” bushfires of 2019-2020 because of land-clearing, drought, disease, car strikes and dog attacks, said Josey Sharrad, wildlife campaign manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national icon (象征),” Sharrad said, “The bushfires were the final straw. This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitat from development and land-clearing, and seriously deal with the influences of climate change.”
What is the problem mentioned in Para 1
Koala populations have increased quickly.
Koalas enjoy too much popularity in Australia.
Koalas get crushed by other animals.
Koalas are at risk of extinction.
29. Why did environmentalists welcome the koala’s new status
A. This would stop koalas from extinction.
B. They could blame the government’s failure.
C. This could lead to stronger action to protect koalas.
D. They may have time to recover koala habitats.
30. How does the author prove his idea
A. By making a comparison. B. By analyzing figures.
C. By doing a survey. D. By quoting environmentalists’ words.
31. What’s the purpose of this text
A. To call on people to protect Koala. B. To show the causes of Koalas’ disappearance.
C. To show Koalas’ important statue. D. To present environmentalists’ words.
D
Artificial intelligence(AI) models have long surpassed(超出) just creating text responses and images. Now, with only one sentence, OpenAI’s latest text-to-video model, Sora, can turn your words into video with good visual quality while completely following your content instructions(指令).
Sora is said to be better than many other existing models with similar functions. The AI model can create videos at suitable aspect ratios(屏幕高宽比) for different devices. It also lets users quickly test out content in lower quality before making the high-quality version, which helps speed up output according to the user’s requests.
Apart from this, its ability to present videos in a realistic and smooth manner is surprising. Sora can create detailed scenes with several characters, specific types of motion, and accurate(准确的) subject and background details. Beyond the user’s requests, it also understands how these elements exist in the real world. For example, reflections in the water change as a woman walks by.
However, the current model isn’t perfect. It may have trouble accurately showing how things move in a complicated(复杂的) scene and might not get how one action leads to another. For example, if someone eats part of a cookie in a Sora-made video, the cookie might not look like it’s been bitten into. The model might mix up directions and find it hard to describe events in the right order. One possible reason is that Sora learns each basic unit of a video, known as a spacetime patch(时空补丁), independently.
Sora is still in the testing stage of development. OpenAI is now inviting network security professionals to make random attacks on Sora’s system in order to test the model’s possible weaknesses and risks. Sora has also been open to some visual artists, designers and filmmakers. Their feedback will help OpenAI to improve the model to better serve creative professionals.
What is the main focus of paragraph 2 and 3
Sora’s strengths. B. Sora’s weaknesses.
C. Sora’s development. D. Sora’s popularity.
33. Why does the author provide the example in paragraph 4
A. To show Sora’s safety problems. B. To show Sora’s existing weaknesses.
C. To show Sora’s perfect performance. D. To explain the concept of a spacetime patch.
34. What can we know about Sora up to now
A. It has experienced testing and improvement.
B. It has enjoyed great popularity.
C. It has made random attacks.
D. It has been applied in various industries.
35. What’s the best title for the text
A. Sora: A perfect text-to-video AI model B. Sora: Surpass existing ChatGPT.
C. Sora: Known as a spacetime patch. D. Sora: Lead the way in creating videos.

读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Mitzvah is a word my grandmother often said to me since my childhood. It’s a Hebrew word that means “to do a good deed”. But according to my grandmother, it also had another meaning. This was the one she was always pointing out to me because she’d noticed how shy I was about letting people do things for me. “Linda, it’s a blessing to do a mitzvah for someone else, but sometimes it’s a blessing to let another person do something for you.” I never really understood what she meant until recently.
It was three months ago, and I’d just moved into an apartment for college in Brooklyn, New York. Several of my friends had offered to help me settle in after the moving men left, but I’d said I could manage. Letting them help did not fit my image of myself as a capable and independent woman of 21.
As December arrived, getting to school became more difficult. One day, snowflakes had been falling past my window for several hours when it came time to leave for class. I put on two sweaters, a coat, a wool hat and boots, making for the bus stop. In this December storm it was a hard journey. As I tied around my neck the blue scarf that Grandma had knitted(编织) for me, I could almost hear her voice. “Why don’t you see if you cam find a lift(搭便车) ” A thousand reasons came into my mind: I don’t know my neighbours; I feel funny asking for favours. Pride would not let me ask even though I came across three neighbours at the door of the apartment building. One of them was the woman living upstairs, and in her hand there was an obvious car key.
Result An hour of waiting in the bitter cold before the bus finally arrived, followed by another half-hour journey. When I sneaked into the classroom, the class was almost over. If only I had taken the chance and asked for help! It would have been a 10-minute ride by car. Grandma would be shaking her head at my stubbornness(固执).

To ensure its success, I propose performances by our respective school choirs and bands, highlighting our distinctive musical styles. We could also feature joint performances with traditional instruments like the Chinese Guzheng and the Irish harp, creating an unforgettable symphony of East meets West. Additionally, we plan to offer genre-specific workshops , such traditional Irish folk songs and Chinese Peking Opera, led by experts or talented students. One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
On the day of my final exam, I again walked to the bus stop through heavy snow. For an hour, I stretched my neck, praying desperately that a bus would come. Then I gave up. The wind at my back pushed me toward home, and I prayed, “how can I get to school What should I do ” As I palled Grandma’s scarf more tightly around my mock, again I seemed to hear that whisper. Ask someone for a lift! It could be a mitzvah. That idea had never really made sense to me. And even if I wanted to ask someone for a good deed, which I did not, there wasn’t a soul on the street. Paragraph 2;
As I pushed open the door of my apartment building, I found myself face to face with the woman from upstairs. She was going out with a set of keys in her hand. In that split second, desperation overcame pride. I blurted, “Could you possibly give me a lift ” I hurriedly explained, “I’ve been waiting for the bus for ages, and I don’t want to miss my final exam.” Her expression softened with understanding, “Of course, I’ll give you a lift.” Heaving a sigh of relief, I couldn’t help but marvel at how a simple act of asking for help had changed everything, It was at that moment that I finally understood what “Mitzvah” really meant.

About twenty years ago, before going on some wilderness research, I visited Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. It was a small city of 40,000 people surrounded by a quiet wilderness. When I made a recent trip there. I found amazing changes. Anchorage now has a hundred and eight thousand people. There’re tall buildings, shopping centers and all the crowds and traffic jams. The forests and mountains are still nearby, but they seem so small compared to the city's great size. The discovery of oil in Alaska brought increased wealth to the state. However, there have been too many people moving to Alaska in a very short period to work on the pipeline. There is not enough housing or transportation.
I think Alaska must make important decisions soon. Alaskans need to decide how to develop their natural resources and mineral wealth without destroying the wilderness and harming the wildlife. What is decided on now will affect the generations to come. For today’s lecture, I’ve brought along many of the pictures I usually show in my environmental science classes in my own university. First, I'll show you some pictures of Alaska’s wilderness as it is today. Then I’d like to outline my specific suggestions.
