As a child growing up in a suburban town in the Northeast of the United States, the arrival of spring had little meaning for me. Sure, we had a weeklong spring vocation from school, but the key word there was vacation, not spring.
For the kids in my neighborhood, the arrival of spring was a non-event. There were two important seasons: winter, when we could go skating and sledding or build snow forts, and summer, when we could finally make proper use of the beach about 100 meter east of my family home. Spring and autumn were just technical details, weeks and weeks of waiting for the good times’ return.
Admittedly, spring later developed its own attractions for me—“In the spring a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love”, as the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson noted—however, it was not spring itself, but the other stuff bat got my attention.
In short, I never thought much at all about spring…. and then I arrived in China. I had been in Beijing for about three months when my first Spring Festival rolled around, and it could hardly be ignored. Aside from the random bursts of fireworks at any time day or night, what stood out most for me was that the capital seemed to be empty.
It was as though the crowds and streams of cars and trucks commonly seen in the capital had all gone into hiding. My puzzlement cleared up when I returned to work. My colleagues explained that Chinese traditionally travel, if necessary, to visit their families during Spring Festival, and that many Beijingers were not natives of the capital.
I also got my first knowledge of something about Spring Festival that never ceases to amaze me. Regardless of when the holiday is set to begin, there is an almost immediate and sudden change for the better in the weather. Spring really does arrive.
I can’t begin to figure out how the ancient Chinese could create a system that would almost always accurately predict when the season would shift year after year after year. But they did.
24. What did the author think of spring as a child
A. It was a season full of promise.
B. It was always beyond his imagination.
C. It was a tiring and long holiday.
D. It hardly left a good impression on him.
25. What impressed the author most about Beijing during the Spring Festival
A. The busy traffic. B. The unexpected quietness.
C. Beijingers’ love for travel. D. Occasional bursts of fireworks.
26. How does the author feel about the system created by ancient Chinese
A. Adorable. B. Confused. C. Wonderful. D. Convenient.
27. What can be inferred from the text
A. Spring Festival in Beijing will make one feel quite lonely.
B. The author spent his first Spring Festival at a colleague’s home.
C. In China Spring Festival always indicates the coming of Spring.
D. The author still worked during the Spring Festival while in Beijing.
C
Most of us want to get in shape and be healthy. For many of us nutrition (营养) and watching what we eat is an important way to stay healthy. But when it comes to food, what is calorie counting, and what are the positives and negatives of it
A law in the UK came into force in April 2022 that requires restaurants, takeaways, and cafes to display the calorie information of non-pre-packed food and soft drinks on their menus. It’s a strategy aimed to deal with obesity (肥胖) and give people a more informed choice of what goes down into their stomachs. Being able to count calories and know how much we can eat is a great way to try and stay on track with our diet.
However, there are some disbelievers when it comes to calorie counting. 200 calories of fresh fruit and 200 calories of junk food, for example cookies, have the same caloric value. However, there is a question of the health benefits of what you’re eating, regardless of calories. While fresh fruit like apples contains things like vitamin C, junk food could contain an unhealthy level of sugar and fats. Likewise (同样地), fruit may fill you up and leave you not wanting more food for longer than a biscuit with equal calories — meaning, overall, you eat less.
Simply counting calories, while useful for weight loss, doesn’t take into account your intake of good fats, carbohydrates, and proteins — things that your body needs. So, if you’re trying to stick to a low-carbon diet, just looking at numbers of calories on a menu won’t be that useful. So, always be mindful that what you’re eating is part of a healthy balanced diet.
28. What’s the aim of the newly-passed law in the UK
A. To ensure food security. B. To direct the food industry.
C. To help reduce obesity. D. To get tough with the businessmen.
29. What opinion do disbelievers hold
A. Calorie alone doesn’t contribute to health.
B. Junk food has more calories than fresh fruit.
C. Less calories mean less food in your stomach.
D. Sugar and fats are more harmful than calories.
30. What’s the text mainly about
A. The best way to keep in shape.
B. A research result of obesity in the UK.
C. Nutrition and its health benefit.
D. Opinions and comments on calorie counting.
31. From which section of a magazine is this text most likely taken
A. Entertainment. B. Lifestyle. C. Finance. D. Education.
D
Some of the recent scientific studies have found that people who receive higher education live longer than those who do not. According to a new study, reading books extends lifespan (寿命) by up to two years, and the more often you read, the better.
Back in 1975, economists concluded that longer lifespan is linked to the wealth of a person, and that wealth itself increases lifespan. It seemed self-evident: everything people need to be healthy from food to medical care costs money. But soon it was realized that the data didn’t always fit that theory. Economic success didn’t always mean longer lives. In the 1980s, researchers found gaining higher education is connected with a greater increase in lifespan than gains in wealth.
One fact is of teachers and college professors: they live longer than the rest of the population. The reason is that they take part in research most of their lives for teaching or publishing, which increases their lifespan and most importantly also retards their aging process.
Let’s look at what benefits educated people. Educated people get routinely involved in social networks; they get access to information because of their ability to understand information. They can easily make use of the health care system; they have more social support.
Reading helps us understand how other people think and feel. Reading improves our emotional intelligence. This understanding can improve the quality of a person’s life as it would allow the person to act with better judgment and have more insight into the feelings and thought patterns of others. Research has shown that reading changes certain areas of the brain and causes certain other parts to be active. This effect can also be observed in adults who learn to read much later in life. Learning has no age limit. Each and every human is born with the right to be educated. So, don’t hold back your urge to learn. The goal of education is to improve intelligence as well as the lifespan.
32. What conclusion did economists in 1975 draw
A. People need high-quality food to keep healthy.
B. Medical care costs more money than food .
C. Most old people have the habit of reading.
D. Wealthy people tend to live longer.
33. What did researchers find in the 1980s
A. Health has nothing to do with wealth.
B. Education does affect people’s lifespan.
C. Economic success always belongs to professors.
D. Children from poor families can rarely gain higher education.
34. What does the underlined word “retards” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Speeds up. B. Turns back. C. Slows down. D. Contributes to.
35. What can we know about reading from the last paragraph
A. It can help people understand humans’ brain better.
B. It is beneficial to people’s EQ and brain health.
C. It can change a person’s lifestyle completely.
D. It is effective against cancer.

Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate
Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst. 36 Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.
◇Talk things munication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I’ve seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. 37
◇Don’t expect to be best friends. Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don’t. Don’t put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. 38 And if your roommate doesn’t end up being your best friend, don’t worry.
◇Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 39
Clean up after yourself. This should do without saying. Don’t be lazy. Or, at least, don’t bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I’ve come across in college are messy. 40 But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.
A. So you need to think twice before you help your roommates out.
B. This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.
C. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
D. You don’t have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.
E. It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.
F. Sometime you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.
G. Remember, you’re trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate away.

Sam was a junior high school student. He lived in a community in Charlotte and usually had little exposure to country life. So much of what he knew about plants came from text-books. Sam was a kind-hearted person. He longed for a chance to explore nature and he wanted to do his part to beautify the world.
Finally, the opportunity came. On Arbor Day (植树节), his class organized a trip to a local village to plant trees. Sam was excited about it and couldn’t wait to tell his mom the good news. So the next day, Sam and his mom went to buy some tools for planting trees, including a shovel (铲), a bucket, gloves and so on.
On the day of the event, Sam and his classmates arrived early at the starting point. It was a beautiful day and everyone looked particularly happy. With the tools in hand, Sam got into the bus with everyone else and headed off to their destination.
As soon as they reached the village, all the students were divided into three teams by their teacher. One team was responsible for planting the trees, one team for shovelling the soil and one team for watering the trees. At the teacher’s command, everyone started to do their job.
However, it was the first time that many of the students had taken part in planting trees, so they had no idea about how to start. Of course, Sam was one of them. Fortunately, their teacher was a middle-aged man from the countryside who had some knowledge of planting trees. In order to set an example to the students, the teacher started to plant trees himself. After watching the teacher plant the trees, everyone also became busy. Before long, they planted hundreds of trees. Sam watched very carefully, not wanting to miss any of the details. Finally, Sam learned how to plant trees by himself and felt happy.

66. Dear Tom,
Knowing that you’re interested in mobile payment in China, I’m more than glad to share some ideas of mine about it.
In China, most of us are used to paying by scanning QR codes for whatever we buy. It is generally believed that China is the largest mobile payment market, which has benefited our life a lot. With the widespread use of mobile payment, WeChat or Alipay makes it convenient for us to pay. Rarely do we have to carry cash around or wait in line. Personally, I think mobile payment should be encouraged Not only does it bring consumers great convenience, but there are often additional discounts if you make mobile payment.
I hope my explanation can be of some help to you. Wish you all the best.
Yours,
Li Hua
67. 参考范文
A few days later, a storm damaged some young trees in the community. After seeing what had happened. Sam felt that it was time for him to put the skills of planting trees he had learned to use. He went home and told his mom he wanted to save those trees. So he took the tools that he had used to plant the trees. With the skills taught by his teacher, he worked with his mom to replant those trees. They helped the trees survive.
The neighbours praised Sam for what he had done. Sam told them about his experience of planting trees. But he owed all the kindnesses to his teacher and mother. He explained that because of his teacher and mother, he learned the skills and saved the trees. The neighbours were very happy to hear that. They said Sam was a role model and that they would ask their children to learn the skills from Sam. Sam felt proud and decided to develop a better community and protect the environment with them.
