The next generation of scientists and inventors is already finding approaches to address society’s problems. A group of high school students and their instructor report a solution to the problem of lead (铅) pollution in drinking water — an inexpensive faucet (水龙头) attachment that removes this poisonous metal. Unlike conventional filters currently on the market, theirs includes a container made of eco-friendly plastic and indicates when it’s “used up” by turning the tap water yellow.
“A few years ago, I saw a video of a woman in Michigan turn on her tap water, and it came out brown.” says Rebecca Bushway, the project’s principal investigator. “That made me think — because there’s really no safe level of lead in drinking water, wouldn’t it be nice to have a water filter that could tell you your water is polluted, well before it turns brown because of lead ”
Bushway, as a science teacher, wondered aloud to her chemistry class if there was a little filter that they could make from inexpensive components to easily remove lead. The students were excited about the idea, and they started thinking about the project in 2020.
The students discussed designs for an attachment to screw (用螺丝固定) a filter onto a sink’s faucet. Then in the spring semester of 2021, they 3D printed the attachment and a 3-inch-tall filter housing, using eco-friendly plastic. They filled the containers with some chemical powder. Next, the students added a tiny spectrophotometer (分光光度计) with a single-wavelength LED to the bottom of the filter container. They installed an indicator light that turns on as soon as the detector identifies the yellow color of the lead iodide (碘化铅).
The team’s goal is to make and sell their filters for less than $1 each. Because the housings use eco-friendly plastic, the cost could trend a little higher, but the material would help reduce the overall environmental impact of the filter.
The process of developing the filter has been very fulfilling. “Ultimately, this experience has shown students they can make a difference to somebody, and that there are problems they can fix with science,” said Bushway.
4. What shows that the filter is running out according to the text
A. The change of the water’s color. B. The change of the filter housing’s color.
C. The times of the filter being used. D. The flash of the indicator light.
5. What inspired Bushway to remove lead in the water
A. Her personal experience in Michigan. B. The unsafe water used by a woman.
C. A lack of safe drinking water. D. The experiments carried out in her class.

A. Chemical powder reacts with the lead in the water.
B. A detector is fixed to identify the lead iodide.
C. The students have developed eco-friendly plastic.
D. The filter has an advantage over others in price.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To advertise a product to remove lead to readers.
B. To highlight the hardships the inventors encounter.
C. To praise the young for shouldering responsibilities.
D. To stress the importance of environmental protection.

Birds in North America will no longer be named after people, the American Ornithological Society (美国鸟类学会) announced Wednesday. Next year, the organization will begin to rename around 80 species found in the U.S. and Canada.
“There is power in a name, and some English bird names have associations with the past that continue to be exclusionary (排他的) and harmful today,” the organization’s president, Colleen Handel, said in a statement. “Everyone who loves and cares about birds should be able to enjoy and study them freely.”
Rather than review each bird named after a person individually, all such birds will be renamed, the organization announced. Birds that will be renamed include those currently called Wilson’s warbler and Wilson’s snipe, both named after the 19th-century naturalist Alexander Wilson. Audubon’s shearwater, a seabird named for John James Audubon, also will get a new name. In 2020, the organization renamed a bird once referring to a Confederate Army general, John P. McCown, as the thick-billed longspur.
“I’m really happy and excited about the announcement,” said Emily Williams, an ornithologist at Georgetown University who was not involved in the decision. She said heated discussions over bird names have been happening within birdwatching communities for the past several years. “Naming birds based on habitat or appearance is one of the least problematic approaches,” she said.
Earlier this year, the National Audubon Society (NAS) announced that it would keep its name, even as critics and some voices within the organization have argued that it should dump (抛弃) the association with a man, John James Audubon, whose family treated their employees cruelly.
“The name has come to represent so much more than the work of one person,” Susan Bell, chair of the National Audubon Society’s Board of Directors, told Audubon magazine in March, adding, “We shouldn’t ignore what John James Audubon did to his employees in the past.”
8 Why are some examples given in paragraph 3
A. To state naming birds after people is common practice.
B. To show birds are closely related to people’s daily life.
C. To introduce some famous naturalists to the readers.
D. To stress the influence celebrities have on society.
9. How should birds be named according to Emily Williams
A. After their places of birth.
B. Based on their communities.
C. According to their habits.
D. In terms of their living places.
10. What is Susan Bell’s attitude towards the decision of NAS
A. Supportive. B. Carefree.
C. Disapproving. D. Sympathetic.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Rare Species Found in North America
B. Bird Names Linking to Human History
C. Discussions Caused by Bird Names
D. Bird Species to Be Renamed Next Year
D
In an era dominated by texting and messaging apps, phone calls seem to become a relic (遗物) of the past among younger generations, Gen Z in particular. A recent survey shows that a quarter of 18 to 24-year-olds refuse to pick up the phone, and over half ignore calls from their parents. Why do we find phone calls so awkward, and is avoiding them damaging our relationships
The avoidance of phone calls isn’t just a preference; it’s a display of anxiety. Phone conversations can be awkward due to the lack of non-verbal clues. In face-to-face interactions, we rely heavily on gestures, facial expressions, and body language to interpret messages, which are absent in phone conversations. This can lead to misunderstandings and a feeling of disconnect. Additionally, the pressure to respond immediately without enough time to think, as afforded by messaging apps, can increase the anxiety associated with phone calls.
Despite the discomfort they may cause, phone conversations are an important skill. In the professional world, the ability to communicate effectively over the phone remains a critical skill. As I emphasize in my teachings and workshops, clear, confident, and real-life communication can significantly impact personal and professional success. Therefore, it’s crucial for younger generations, including Gen Z, to learn how to communicate well with others over the phone, not just for professional success but also for developing personal relationships.
Relying merely on messaging apps can have harmful effects on Gen Z’s well-being and relationships. The survey indicates a growing discomfort with direct voice communication can lead to a lack of deeper, empathetic (共情的) connections. This can potentially impact their ability to form meaningful relationships and deal with situations where direct communication like phone calls is momentous.
Moreover, as I advocate in my approach to public speaking, including emotional elements into communication enhances memorability (值得记忆) and impact. Phone conversations, with their immediate and personal nature, can develop a deeper emotional connect ion than text-based communication.
12. What can we know from paragraph 2
A. Why people are making fewer phone calls.
B. How young men respond to phone calls.
C. What impact can phone calls have.
D. How much further phone calls go.
13. Which statement will the author probably agree with
A. Future success is mainly based on phone talks.
B. It's vital to acquire the art of phone conversation.
C. Learning how to communicate is the focus.
D. Much remains to be done for better personal skills.
14. What does the underlined word “momentous” mean in paragraph 4
A. Obvious. B. Important. C. Missing. D. Temporary.
15. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. An interview. B. A book review. C. A lecture. D. A diary entry.

My four-year-old son Jack had a vast collection of toy cars, his prized possessions. One day, I jokingly suggested, “Jack, how about giving away some of your toy cars to the children who don’t have any ” “No, these are mine,” he said angrily, holding on to his toy cars tightly. At that moment, I knew he didn’t grasp the importance of sharing. Therefore, I decided it was time for me to teach him a valuable lesson.
The next day, I planned a special day out with him with the aim of gently getting him to open his heart. Our special day began with a visit to the local park, a place where Jack always feels pleased. We found a tree coming into flower, bathed in the warm sunlight. Nearby, a group of children were playing together. “Look, Jack,” I pointed out. “See how they’re sharing their toys Notice the smiles on their faces ” Those children attracted Jack’s attention. He watched carefully as one child passed a bright red toy truck to another, and he noticed how their faces lit up in a shared moment of happiness. It made him feel curious. I continued, “Sharing doesn’t just make others happy, it can make you feel good too.” Jack kept silent with his expression becoming thoughtful and a bit doubtful.
On the way home, we stopped by a small community center which was hosting a charity event. Volunteers, cheerful and warm, were collecting toys for the poor children. Tables in front of them were decorated with various kinds of toys. Jack observed some children of his age eagerly contributing toys, their faces shining with pride and happiness. “See, Jack,” I whispered. “A small act of kindness can bring great joy to you and others.” Jack made no reply but from his hesitant look I could see he was struggling with an internal conflict.

【47题答案】
【答案】As we were about to leave, a little girl arrived. Jack’s gaze was fixed on the girl who was no older than him. She walked into the community center with a firm step, her hands holding a well-worn teddy bear tightly. Handing the volunteer her teddy bear, she said, “This is my only toy, but I want to give it away to pass on my best wishes to others.” Jack’s eyes widened as he absorbed the simple yet powerful message. Then his hesitant expression was replaced by a determined look.
Moved by the little girl, Jack urged me to take him home. Upon arriving home, he rushed into his bedroom and care fully sorted through his toy cars. “Dad, I want to give these to other kids,” he said earnestly, showing me a fistful of his favorites. We packed them together and headed back to the community center. As we arrived, Jack eagerly handed his cars over to the volunteers, his eyes full of the joy of sharing. Seeing his transformation filled my heart with huge pride. It was a meaningful day for both of us.
