Lead-in 5 minutes Free talk Students will be asked to discuss the following two questions at the beginning: Q1: What achievements has the world made in space exploration so far Q2: What benefits has the exploration brought to us Through the free talk, the teacher will help students activate background knowledge about the achievements of human beings in the exploration of the universe. In addition, students will understand the importance of the exploration of the universe by discussing the benefits it has brought to mankind, such as the promotion of technological development, etc.
Pre-reading 5 minutes Prediction Students will be asked to read the title and the first paragraph to know the type of the passage: 1)Where can we find the passage A. magazine B. travel journal C. news report D. science book 2)What’ s the feature of a popular science article Through prediction, the teacher will train students' ability to infer the subject matter of this article through headings, means of reading, pictures, etc., and thus to understand some of the line features of popular science articles.
While-reading 25 minutes (一)Fast reading 1.Read for skills of Gap-filling 1)Students will be asked read the missing sentences altogether and revise the steps to this exercise. Step1: Read the options. Find keywords and categorize them roughly. Teacher: What do “key words” refer to here Subject, Object: pronouns: this,they,them...; Logical connectives: although, also, because, etc; Logical sequences: first, then, besides, etc; Recurring words: near, antonym, synonym, etc. Step2:Read the first paragraph carefully to get the topic. Step3:Contextualization. Focus on blank locations; skip the difficult questions first. Step4:Bring the answer into the text to check if it is correct. 2)Students will be asked to underline the key words in the sentences, and categorize the sentences. 3)Students will be asked to choose the answer to the first gap altogether. And tell the reason why. 4)Students will be asked to read the first paragraph again and try to summarize the main idea with their own words. Main idea = topic sentence+supporting details People are ____________the space and make ________ to ________ the universe, like making _________. 2.Read for main idea 1)Students will be asked to read the following paras to finish the gap-filling and try their best to summarize the main idea. Tip: When there is no topic sentence, you should pay attention to the key words and logical development of the writer to get the main idea. 2)Check the answers Through reading for skills, reading for main idea, students will have an overall understanding of the passage.
3.Careful reading 1)Read the paragraph 2 carefully and do the following tasks: A.rearrange the sentences. ( ) many goals were achieved. What was writer’ s comment on China’s achievements of space exploration A. surprised B. admired C. passive D. both A and B Through reading the passage paragraph by paragraph, students will have a better command of the details of this passage and also improve their reading abilities.
Post-reading 6 minutes Group discussion Further Thinking 1. Where was the title “Space:The Final Frontier” adapted from 2. What does the title mean to you Please discuss in groups. This task can make students have a deeper understanding of the passage. And by group discussion, students’ critical thinking can be developed.
Summary 3 minutes Teacher will ask students the following questions to recall what they have just learned: What’s the main idea of each para How to get the main idea What is the main idea of the whole passage Can you divide the passage into several parts according to the main ideas How to choose proper answers of the missing sentences in a passage Reviewing the content and structure of passage they have just learned can deepen students’ impression and help them form good study habits.
Homework 1 minutes Write a small essay to illustrate why we should explore the space. On the one hand, this homework can consolidate what students have learned in this lesson. Meantime, to finish this report, students have to collect more information, which can help them actively explore more knowledge.
