At the end of the class, students should be able to: 1.predict the main content of a text based on its title and pictures. 2.extracting the key information or central sentences of the discourse and summarizing the main ideas of the paragraphs through skimming. 3.sort out specific information about the influence of the virtual choir, its founder and its founding, and analyze and summarize the reasons for its success through careful reading. 4.learn to analyze the function of transitional sentences and understand the role of quotations and data in the reading process. 5.organize information logically and express personal opinions based on what they have learned in this lesson, with the help of mind maps. 6.form correct values, understand the positive role of virtual choirs, and establish the concept that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things through hard work.

Lead-in 5 minutes 1. Teacher shares a song with Students, showing music has its magic. 2. Free talk: Students like listening to music and singing songs, so ask them: What are the ways for you to experience music 3. Video time: Share a short video to make them know something about the virtual choir. 1.Use music to introduce the charm of music and activate students’ knowledge about music. 2.Students talk about the different forms of experiencing music, which leads to the convenience brought by the Internet and prepares the ground for the following analysis of the conditions for the establishment of virtual choirs. 3.Watching a small video makes students form a preliminary perception of virtual choir, which leads to the topic of this lesson.
Pre-reading 3 minutes Prediction Teacher asks Students to look at the title and the picture and answer: If you were the writer, what would you write about this topic(The Virtual Choir) Let students make predictions based on the title and pictures to form reading expectations and make them well prepared for following reading.
While-reading 25 minutes 1.Fast reading skimming Skim the text and find the main idea of each paragraph. Pay more attention to keywords, the first and last sentences. Through skimming, students will check if their prediction is correct. In addition, skimming help them develop their ability to have an overall comprehension of text and to summarize.
2.Careful reading (1)Para 1 1. Scan and find out the specific information: what, who, where, how, why; 2. Analyze the function of the quote: “Music helps me to... forget my problem. With music, I become someone else”. (2)Para 2 1. Scan and circle times, and find out what happened to Eric Whitacre at each time. 2. Analyze Eric’s qualities that led to the creation of the virtual choir. 3. How to understand Eric’s words, “It was like seeing color for the first time.” (3)Para 3 1. Scan and find out what else led to the creation of the virtual choir. 2. Introduce the UNICEF, and make Students know the ordinary can become extraordinary. 3. Sum up the elements leading to the success of the virtual choir. Through careful reading, students will have a better command of details of this passage. Also, students will learn how Eric made the virtual choir from favorite to professional to popular, step by step, and students will learn to cherish the good time of receiving education in school. Moreover, Through the introduction of UNICEF, we broaden students' international perspective and enhance their sense of responsibility.
Post-reading 8 minutes Further-thinking and discussion. 1. How to understand “sing with one voice” 2. Discuss why the virtual choir can make the world a better place. Through the analysis of "one voice", students develop the ability to analyze the meaning of the text beyond the words. By analyzing the role and meaning of the virtual choir, students will understand the text structure of echoing the first and last paragraphs and enhance their awareness of the discourse.
Summary 3 minutes 1. Teacher sums up the text and asks Students to retell the text referring to the mind map. 2. Explain the meaning of the virtual choir. 3. End the class with a saying from Leo Tolstoy “Wisdom comes from diligence, and greatness comes from the ordinary.” After studying the text, students retell it with the help of a mind map to internalize what they have learned in class. By analyzing the meaning of the virtual choir and combining it with Tolstoy's quotes, teacher are able to convey the philosophy of life that "ordinary people can become extraordinary" to students.
Homework 1 minutes 1. Write a summary of the text referring to the mind map. 2. Search the Internet to get more information about the virtual choir. The homework can help students have a clearer understanding of the structure and content of the text. Moreover, through the homework, teacher encourages students to broaden their learning channels and acquire and reserve more knowledge outside the classroom in the process of learning English.
