Step Activity Purpose
1. Lead-in 1.Create a situation as below: Dear students, Next week, we are going to have school concert. I sincerely invite you to make a speech at the opening ceremony on the topic “How music impacted my life”. Thank you. Mr. Lee 1.To introduce the topic and attract their attention and stimulate interest.
2. Read for details 1.Ask students to listen to the speech and answer the following questions: What was Sarah’s problem How did the music change her feelings How did music help her during her difficult time What is her advice to others 2.Ask students try to summarize Sarah’s story. 3.Ask students to have a free discussion on how does music impact people. 1.To help the students to understand the content. 2.To help the students develop critical thinking ability.
3. Read for language features 1.Introduce the basic rhetorical devices to students. 2.Ask students to match the names of rhetorical devices to the lettered sentences in the speech. 3.Ask students to compare 2 groups of sentences and conclude the function of rhetorical devices. 1.To enable the students to identify and understand these rhetorical devices.
4. Read for structure 1.Ask students to read the speech again and divide it. 2.Summarize the main idea of each part. To help students to identify the structure features of a speech.
5. Write a draft 1.Give students specific requirements. 2.Ask students to use some rhetorical devices in their writing. 3.Ask students to revise their speeches with their deskmates 1. To give the requirements for writing. 2. To pave the way for writing. 3. To raise students’ awareness of cooperative work.
6. Presentation and assessment 1.Invite some students to deliver their speech. While they are giving their speeches, they should pay attention to the tips given. 2.Other students assess their writing according to the table given. 1.To develop their critical thinking. 2.To help students find their shortcomings in writing.
7. Homework 1.Students polish and revise their draft using rhetorical devices. 1.To help students consolidate knowledge.
