教 学 过 程 Step1: Warming up 1. Write the phrase “neighborhood conflicts” on the blackboard and ask students to answer the questions below. Have you ever experienced a neighborhood conflict What do you think might cause conflicts between neighbors 2. Draw students ‘attention to the list of possible causes. Elicit some other possible causes. loud noise made by neighbours can't read without plugging your ears to be driven mad by neighbours bad smells from a neighbour's fish tank can rarely get a full night's sleep 3. Invite some students to voice their opinions. [设计意图]通过讨论的形式导入本课话题,激活学生已有的相关背景知识,为后文做好情感以及话题的铺垫。 Step 2: Predict. 1. Tell students that they will read two newspaper reports on neighbourhood conflicts. 2. Ask students to look at the titles on Pages 30 and 31 and pictures below, and then let them predict the main ideas of the two newspaper reports, [设计意图]在阅读之前让学生仔细观察图片并结合标题大胆预测文本内容,形成阅读期待,为提高阅读效率奠定基础。 Step 3: Reading 1.Fast-reading (1).Ask students to quickly read the two newspaper reports on neighborhood conflicts and find out what caused each conflict. (2).Check the answers as a class. Suggested answers: Drummer Hits the Road Ma Ming often held parties at night, but the biggest problem was his tendency to drum late at night. Grandpa Arrested After One Shower Too Many It was not only the water falling onto the Mckays' balcony from Smith watering his plants that bothered them, but also the way he cleaned his fish tanks.
[设计意图]通过快速阅读找出邻里冲突的原因,获取文章的主要内容。 2. Careful-reading Task1 Answer the questions. (1).Ask students to read the report “Drummer Hits the Road” and answer the following questions. Why did the neighbors complain about Ma Ming What did the community council do Why did they take action Where is Ma Ming now What is his attitude towards the conflict What do you understand by the title “Drummer Hits the Road" .Because he often held parties at night and drummed late at night. .They took a vote, gave Ma Ming a warning and told him that he ought to cease drumming or leave the property. Because after such a chorus of complaints, they had to take action. . Now he is in a hotel in Shanghai. Ma Ming felt that they were prejudiced against him. He's bitter over the fact that people thought of his music as “ noise". Otherwise he didn't really mind having to leave the flat. . The drummer starts a journey to look for a proper house to stay.

(2).Have students discuss their answers in small groups. (3).Review the answers as a class. Suggested answers: People involved James McKay,80-year-old retired tailor, a peaceful person1 Laurene,McKay's wife: Keith Smith,30 years old, a keen gardener and a fish collector Time on Saturday evening The event Background: Smith moved into the flat. Water fell onto the McKays' balcony from Smith watering his plants and cleaning his fish tanks, The McKays couldn't get rid of the smell of the fish, Conflict: Keith Smith emptied one of his larger tanks over his balcony and both the McKays and the cake got all wes through on James MeKay's birthday. James McKay hit Smith's head with his walking stick and was put into jail. Result: Smith is not going to take things further with the police. He also promised to change his ways from now on. A large crowd of supporters sang “Happy Birthday" to James McKay as he left the police station. He was happy.

Ask them to tell the story from that person's perspective. (2).Elicit the word “perspective” and help some students who may have difficulty in telling the story from other people's perspective. (3).Invite some students to share their story. [设计意图]教师鼓励学生从另一个人的角度来讲述故事,有助于学生更好地理解和掌握故事的主要内容。学生在思考从新的角度来讲述故事的过程中,可以提升他们的语言表达能力及写作水平,积累语言知识以及提升思维品质. 3. After-reading Task1描述与阐释 (1).Ask students to read through the items in both list and point out that they refer to the two reports on Pages30~31. (2).Draw students’ attention to the example and ask them to find the people who did the above and write sentences accordingly. example: Ming often held parties at night and his neighbors were driven mad being exposed to such noise.
[设计意图]通过匹配左右栏中的重点信息,可以再次让学生熟悉文本重点内容,内化语言知识 Task2分析与判断 (1).Instruct students to work in groups; scan the reports and explore the questions below, invite some groups to shares their answers with the class. .Do you think the conflicts were well-resolved in the two reports .What other ways can you think of to deal with the conflicts Suggested answers: . I think there had been other opportunities of resolving the conflicts in a more peaceful manner,. Another way to deal with Ma Ming's conflict, he negotiates an agreement with the community council on a couple of hours he could drum during the day, Smith and McKay's conflict could be dealt with differently if the McKays had made their complaints to Smith earlier and Smith had changed his ways of doing things,
(2).Ask students to find and underline the expressions that describe the intensity of the conflicts in the two reports. Suggested answers: Drummer Hits the Road They couldn't relax or read a book without plogging their cars, One neighbour also claimed that Ma Ming had a bad influence on his teenage son, ..after such a chorus of complaints... Grandpa Arrested After One Shower Too Many ...hitting 30-year-old Keith Smith over the head with his walking stick, ...he had been driven to this net of violence ... He could no longer tolerate it, ...we dared not go onto our balcony... I have never seen him move so fast and I couldn’t stop him.He was up there in a flash.
