教 学 过 程 Step1: Warming up 1. Before reading,encourage students to work in pairs and discuss the following questions. . Do you remember any humorous or funny stories that you have ever read What makes these stories funny Ask students to share the answers in class. 2. Explain two methods of creating humour.(1)Play on words-pun(双关语) An amusing use of a word or phrase that has two meanings, or of words that have the same sound but different meanings What makes these stories funay Ask studests to share the answers in class. 2. Explare two methods of creating humour.(1)Play on words-pun(双关语) An amusing use of a word or phrase that has two meanings, or of words that have the same sound but different meanings (2)Sarcasm(讽刺) Sarcasm generally takes the form of an ironic remark . somewhat rooted in humour, that is intended to mock or satirize something. When a speaker is being sarcastic, he is' saying something different than what he actually means.As a literary device,sarcasm can convey a writer and/ or character's true feelings of frustration.anger,and even derision, though veiled by the presence of humour and wording that is inconsistent with what is intended. However, since sarcastic statements, as they are worded, contradict the speaker's intent and true meaning,it can be difficult for writers to effectively utilize this literary device without proper context or tone. 3. Prediction. Ask students to look at the stories on Pages 8~9,and inspire them to predict what will be mentioned in each story and write down their predictions according to the pictures of each story. After reading,check them. Step 2: Fast-reading Work in groups of three. Each student reads one of the stories and answers the following questions.Then share what they have read with the group members. Which characters are in the story Where are they What happened to/between them Why is it funny Suggested answers: Story A A famous art collector, a store owner and a cat. They are in a store in the city. The art collector wanted to buy the saucer but instead bought a cat. The store owner knew everyone wanted to buy the saucer the cat used, and he made money by selling the cat. Story B Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson. They are outdoors. They were on a camping trip. They were talking about the stars that they could see. ·Watson spoke about astronomy, the positions of stars, the scientific measurement of time and the atmosphere but didn't realize they could see the stars because their tent had been stolen. Story C A doctor and a clown. They are in the doctor's room. They clown was feeling unhappy. They clown who makes everyone laugh can't cheer himself up.
Step 3: Careful-reading Read and complete the tables. In the same groups as the previous activity,students now read the three stories and complete the three table. Story A CharacterWhat did each person do Real purposeThe resultThe art collector The store owner

3. Complete the funny part of the three stories. Ask students to revise what each story is about. Then work independently to complete the funny part of the three stories. Step 4: Post-reading 1.Ask students to read the jokes below and talk about the funny part of each joke. 2.Encourage students to note down the funny part of each joke to share with the class. Girl: Why was the cat sitting on the computer Boy: He was keeping an eye on the mouse.Teacher of politics: Who is the speaker of the House Student: MotherTeacher: What is the chemical formula for water Student: HUKLMNO! Teacher: What are you talking about Student: Yesterday you said it's H to O!
Step5. Summary Ask students to complete the summaries with the words or phrases they have learnt from the stories. An art collector noticed a cat lapping milk from a①__________ in the ②__________of a store.He realised that it was an③__________and very valuable. He decided to buy the cat and offered to pay 200 dollars in the end. Then he asked the store owner to④_______the saucer, but the owner refused to give it away for he had sold 68 cats because of this lucky saucer.
