Senior One students are eager to be independent and think about everything actively, which leads to teenage problems they may meet with, such as Internet addiction, puppy love, feeling lonely, generation gap, and the like. So, writing a letter of advice, close to their daily life, is to guide them to think about these problems, to discuss possible solutions together, and guide them to learn how to give suggestions by writing a letter of advice.
Reading for writing, this part, is designed by combining reading with writing. And reading part is a formal letter of advice, which can support students to write by providing some information, such as its text type, organization and language. And then, help them to generate ideas, organize ideas into paragraphs, make a draft, develop drafts into discourse, next exchange drafts with partners, revise and finish writing, finally display in class. Teacher guides them to write step by step, and all activities about learning and practice are carried out in the process of guiding them.
This teaching period mainly deals with reading for writing a letter of advice. Students are expected to learn the knowledge about how to write a suggestion letter. The teacher is expected to enable students to master some writing skills concerning suggestion letters and learn to write one.

Step 1: Greeting --Catch students’ attention
(We are going to learn how to write a letter of advice…)
Step 2: Leading in (3’)--Activate students’ previous knowledge
Begin the class with the question: why not discuss teenage life together And then use two emojis : happy face and sad face, ask them to choose one to describe their standpoints about their teenage life.
(When we talk about teenage life, which words or phrases come to your mind And why )
Step 3: Prepare students for reading the letter--get students ready to writing
Prepare students for reading by introducing a person called Susan Luo.
Step 4: Read the given letter of advice to discover details concerning the letter. (12’)--Make students understand the content of the letter.
Ask students to read the letter and answer the following questions:
How many parts do you think this letter contains
Do you think Ms Luo's advice is useful Why or why not
What other kinds of advice would you give

Step 5: Read to sum up (5’)--Guide students to discover the writing structure and content.
After answering the detailed questions, guide students to analyze the body organization of the letter and appreciate its language features.

In this part, making students get enough time to read and think individually and independently is emphasized.
Step 6: Read the following three cases, choose one to summarize his/her problems and write down your suggestions and reasons in the form by using the expressions of giving suggestions. And then share with your partners. (3’)--Get students ready to write by exposing them in context

Problems His parents won’t listen to him. Always feels lonely after school. Too shy to talk to the girls he likes.
Suggestions I recommend you write a letter to your parents. I think you should invite some friends to your home after school. Why not start to talk to her about some schoolwork
Reasons A letter can help make them become more serious about your ideas or problems. When you are with your friends, you may feel less lonely. It’s always easy to start a talk with something both of you are familiar with.
Step 7: Use what you have learned to draft a letter offering advice to any of those cases above. (7’)--Help students to write drafts
Complete the outline and use it to draft your writing.
Step 8: Exchange students’ drafts. (4’)--Learn from each other, promote cooperative learning.
After each student finishes their own writing, ask them to exchange the drafts with their desk mates and evaluate the drafts with the following criteria.
Are all the parts of a letter included and organized in a good order Does the writer give reasons for the advice Does the writer use proper expressions to give suggestions Does the writer use commas and stops correctly Is the handwriting easy to read Step 9: Ask students to revise their writing. (10’)--Improve their writing and help them raise their confidence
The following criteria can be the checklist for students to revise their writing.
All all the parts of a letter included and organized in a good order
Does the writer give reasons for the advice
Does the writer use proper expressions to give suggestions
Does the writer use commas and stops correctly
Is the handwriting easy to read
Step 10: Make a summary. (1’)--Make students reinforce what have learned again
In this lesson, we learned how to write a letter of advice. When writing a letter of advice, we should take the following aspects into account:A.
