Analysis of teaching content
The teaching content of this lesson is the listening and speaking part of Senior English for China(PEP) Book1 Unit 4 (2019 edition). The topic of this section is reporting natural disasters. Listening to news reports is still an important way for people around the world to know the events that are happening at home and abroad. It is a very common topic in our daily life, so it is of significance for the students to learn how to listen to news reports. This section consists of pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening questions and exercises for students to complete. By finishing the tasks, students can fully understand the topic, and know how to present a news report.
Analysis of students
The target students are students of grade one in senior high school. They have great curiosity and passion about English learning, but they are short of efficient ways of learning, so the teacher should teach them how to listen efficiently. Because the students already have some understanding about natural disasters previously, they are familiar with this topic, thus laying the foundation of the study of this lesson. What’s more, most of them have developed a good habit of group cooperation after years of learning, so it is easy to carry out group task and engage every student in the class.
Teaching objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: Knowledge aims: 1.master the usage of some new words: disaster, drought, slide, flood, rescue, damage, destroy, death, affect, shelter and ruin. 2.know how to listen for key words Ability aims: 1.develop ability of listening and speaking. 2.cultivate ability of analyzing Emotional aims: 1.develop the ability of how to cooperate and get on well with others. 2.increase the awareness of disaster prevention, build up a positive attitude toward the prevention of natural disasters.
Teaching focus and difficult points
Teaching focus: 1.To improve the students’ listening skills about how to get the information from news reports quickly and efficiently. 2.To increase student’s awareness of forming a positive attitude towards life. Teaching difficult points: 1.Grasp different various natural disasters and their harm; 2.Present a news report.
Teaching methods
Task-based language teaching: guide students to finish different tasks according to the teacher’s instructions.

Step 1 Warming up Have a quick review as a daily routine. Ask students to look at the picture taken from the opening page of this unit and engage them in the three questions: What’s going on in this picture What do you know about natural disasters What natural disasters can you think of Watch a video about natural disasters to know more and remember as many disasters as you can. To help the students review what they learned and prepare them for the new lesson. 2.To motivate students’ interests in the new lesson and activate their knowledge about natural disasters. 5′
Step 2 Pre-listening Get students involved the questions: How could these natural disasters affect our life How can we get the first-hand information of natural disasters While listening to news reports, what kinds of information should we focus on To help students further understand what damage natural disasters can cause to us. Prepare students for the listening. 8′
Step 3 While-listening Listen to four news reports. Write down the natural disasters you hear in each news report. Circle the key word(s) in the questions below and write the kind of information they refer to. Then listen again and answer the questions. Listen again and complete the table with the words you hear. To make Ss know what each news report talks about. 15′
Step 4 Post-listening Read about the disasters below and prepare a short news report on one of them. Then present your news report to a partner. Ask two students to come to the stage to present their own news reports. 1.To motivate Ss’ creative and critical thinking abilities. 2.To increase Ss’ awareness of keeping a positive attitude towards life. 10′
Step 5 Summary Invite students to make a summary about what they learned today. The teacher make a brief but overall summary based on students’. Make students know what they learned, further consolidate the learning objectives of this lesson. 5′
Step 6 Homework Get familiar with the words and expressions related to natural disasters. Write a news report about a natural disaster. To help Ss consolidate the key points of the lesson. 2'
