教材分析 The theme of this unit is "people and society". The lesson is a reading discourse of Unit2 entitled The Underdog discussing the topic of "sports spirit". The article is a story about Paul, a replacement player on his school basketball team, who has a height disadvantage but still loves basketball. And through hard work and perseverance in training, he earned himself a chance to play in an important game and helped his team turn failure into success finally. The author want to help students understand sports spirit and the qualities of athletes and convey to the students that inherent deficiencies do not mean inherent failures. Later efforts will make up for the inborn deficiencies. The passage is a narrative. It contains story background, characters, development, climax, and ending. The key words in the article are mainly about basketball and game, for example, do jump shots, make shot after shot, etc.
学情分析 The students in grade one of senior high school have already learned English for years. They are able to speak and communicate with their friends in simple English. They are highly motivated in acquiring English acknowledge and are gradually forming the ability to obtain information from the English text, and analyze problems in alogical way. The topic Sports and Fitness is close to student's life. However, most of students could not summarize the story in their own words. Besides, junior high school classroom pays more attention to the input of knowledge, some students' English expression and enthusiasm of classroom interaction will be a big challenge for the students. What's more, the differences of students' cognitive level, the capture of information of the details and the understanding of the environmental protection awareness are also a big challenge.
教学目标 Based on the analysis of teaching material and students, teaching objectives are established according to the core competences of English subject. I. Language competence: 1.Students can guess the meaning of the underdog through context and teacher's guidance; 2.Students can learn the meaning and usage of sports related topic vocabulary, such as champion, crash, gather, defeat,inspiration and so on; 3.Students can obtain and sort out factual information in the text that describes Paul himself and the basketball game. II. Cultural awareness: 1.Students can learn the spirit of sports and put it into practice. 2.Students can realize the reasons for Paul's successful transformation from an “underdog" to a “big guy” and learn from Paul's good qualities like persistence and struggle; III. Thinking literacy: 1.Through reading the article, learn about Paul's success process and find out what difficulties he encountered. 2.Through Paul's story helps students develop their critical thinking skills. 3.Students can talk about the essence of an underdog hero both critically and creatively . IV. Learning ability: 1.Students are able to use a variety of cognitive strategies, such as prediction and skimming to learn new words and the spirit of underdog in context. 2.Students can explore the essence of Paul and his sportsmanship through independent study and group work. Meanwhile, share their views in class.

Step1: Lead-in After greeting with students, teacher first play a short video of AD 2024 Pairs Olympic Game,then ask Ss to answer these three questions after watching it 1.How many sports do you recognize 2.What’s your favorite sport 3.What’s your feeling Then ask Ss to guess the meaning of the title The Underdog, and choose their opinion After watching the video Students will talk about their favorite sports and share their feeling about that video After that they should make a prediction about the title To raise students attention and introduce the topic of sports , and have a basic understanding about the title
Step2: presentation (1)Teacher ask Ss to read Part 1 of the story. Then answer these questions. (2)While reading the passage teacher will mention Ss to circle the unknown words and write them down in the notebook Then teach some new words in the text such as
When finish learning these new words Students can read the story fluently and master the key words after that they can learn the main content of the story,which is about Paul’s journey from underdog to keep on improvement and ultimately success. Students can master the key words of this text and also can learn the main content of the story. And get more detail information about the text
(3)then make a summary of part1 (4)After reading part 1, ask students to guess what happens next then read part2 to check prediction.
(5)Then teach will teach these new words Using pictures, hints,exercises, questions and example sentences to teach those new words (6) make a summary of part2 (7) ask students to explore how does Paul makes himself an underdog hero.
Step3 practice (1)linking game Ask Ss to finish this link game
(2)filling in the blank Ask Ss to put the words in the blanks in right form and then translate sentence (3)turntable game When push the start bottom the table will begin to rotate, then it will stop at a certain word, then ask one student to read it and use it to make up a new sentence. Students will follow the instruction of teacher and finish these three tasks, meanwhile they will master the correct usage of these words After presenting the basic usage of these words, play words game will help them to master the word practically, and it will arouse their interests, which may help them to memorize these words effectively.
Step4 production (1)group work Get students in group to discuss these three questions (2)free talk List some pictures about the situation of China in the early time,then ask Ss to describe these pictures with their own expression Then take China as a example of an underdog to inspire Ss to Study hard and make contribution to the society (3)summary and homework Make a summary of this class, and then leave the homework for them Ss will discuss these questions in group and share their feelings with each other ,then they can describe the pictures to find the deep meaning of underdog Group work will enhance their communicating skills , and share their feelings with each other,meanwhile they can apply what they have learned in this class to describe these pictures In the last , they can practice their writing ability
