(2024·河南·中考真题)An old saying used for forecasting (预测) the weather says, “Red sky at night, sailors’ delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors (水手) take warning.” Is the saying true It turns out that it is. A red sky at sunset may mean that there are clear skies to the west, where the sun sets. A red sky at sunrise usually means that the clear weather has already passed, so storms might be coming.
Forecasting the weather has been practiced for thousands of years. In the 5th century BC, the Greeks sent out forecasts to sailors. They used signs in nature to forecast the weather. But today, meteorologists send exact forecasts further in advance (提前). They use scientific instruments to study weather conditions around the world and make forecasts. Pilots, farmers and many other people depend on these forecasts. Luckily, most of us can simply look on the smart phone or turn on the TV to find out what kind of weather is coming.
If you are looking for some signs of the weather, pay attention to nature. There are two basic rules used in weather forecasting: Weather generally moves from west to east, and low air pressure (压力) usually means rain or snow. So pay attention to the signs. If rainbows form in the west at sunrise, the sun is on the way. Smell the flowers—their smells are stronger in wet air. What are the ants doing Are they moving to higher ground This could mean a drop in air pressure. Are the birds flying low or high Falling air pressure may influence birds’ ears, so they fly low. And if the sky is red at sunset, you might plan a picnic for the next day!

“What a mess! It looks as if a hurricane (飓风) passed through Vicky’s bedroom,” said Vicky’s mother. “I must ask her to clean it.”
Vicky was eating breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mom wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.”
Joe, Vicky’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane Is that a bad thing ”
“Sure it is,” said his father.
“I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Vicky. “My first class is geography and Mr. Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door.
Twenty minutes later, Vicky ran into her classroom.
“Today,” said Mr. Miller, “we’re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane ” Vicky thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing.

Energy is the ability to do work. Solar energy comes from the Sun. There is also energy that comes from wind and water.
But do you know that energy can come from people, too When you pedal a bike, you produce energy. You use your legs to push the pedals. Your energy is transferred (转移) to the bike. That makes the bike move.
Now imagine riding your bike to create enough power to run a computer. Some students at one school did just that! They jumped on bikes connected to generators (发电机) and pedaled in place. Soon they were producing electricity. This energy is needed to run their computers.
Here is how bicycle-powered energy works. When a student pedals the bike, the back wheel spins. The wheel spins the generator. The generator produces electricity. As long as a student pedals the bicycle, electricity moves through the generator. The electricity can be used right away. This energy can also be stored and used later.
People use bicycle-powered energy to run small devices (设备) such as small televisions and fans. They often use less than 100 watts per hour. However, it would be a mistake to use pedal power to run a fridge. This large machine often uses more than 700 watts per hour. The electricity for these machines comes from power lines overhead or underground.
Pedal power can be seen in schools, gyms, and homes. What a fun way to provide electricity!

Plunk! I dropped another pecan (山核桃) into my basket. Then a gentle autumn wind blew some more off the tree. I ran to pick them up. Whew! Pecan picking was hard. My basket was only half full.
I was visiting my grandpa’s farm in Kansas, and Grandpa sent me into the woods to pick up pecans for us to enjoy later. I wasn’t about to let him down.
Then something caught my eye: a squirrel picked up a pecan, climbed up a tree and disappeared into a large hole. A moment later, the squirrel climbed down to the ground to pick another pecan. Once again, he took the pecan back to his secret hiding place inside the hollow (洞) of the tree.
Not so secret anymore, I thought. I ran over to the tree and found the hollow was filled with sweet pecans. They were right there for the taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I took all the pecans from the hollow. Now the basket was full!
I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all of the pecans I’d collected.
“Look, Grandpa,” I shouted, “look at all of the pecans I found!”
Grandpa took a look at my basket. “Well, well, how did you find so many, Jimmy ” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place. Grandpa congratulated me on finding out something about the squirrel’s habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
“That squirrel worked very hard to collect his winter food,” he said. “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will be very hungry when it gets cold ”
“I didn’t think about that,” I said.
“I know,” Grandpa said. “But a good man should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work, even the squirrel’s.”
Suddenly I felt as hollow as that old tree. The image (形象) of that hungry squirrel wouldn’t leave my mind. There was only one thing I could do.

(2022·河南·中考真题)There’s nothing quite like falling sound asleep after a full day of work. Like people, animals need to rest after working hard. Some animals sleep in water. Others dig holes under the ground. Some even sleep high in trees or under leaves. But they all find a way to rest.
Some animals in the sea sleep in strange ways. Fish sleep with their eyes open. They seem to look ahead far into the sea while they rest. Sea otters sometimes sleep in beds of the plants that grow in the sea. This keeps them from moving away. Parrotfish blow something from their mouths when they are ready to sleep. Then a bubble (气泡) will be formed around them. The bubble protects them from harm while they sleep.
Some animals sleep under the ground. Chipmunks (花栗鼠) sleep curled up (蜷缩) in a ball. Their beds are made of leaves and grass. In winter, they sleep for two weeks and wake up to eat the stored food. Then they go back to sleep for another two weeks before waking up again. Some desert frogs dig underground holes during the hot, dry season. A frog may stay in its hole for months.
High above the ground, monkeys find leafy places in trees each evening before they sleep. The tall trees help to keep monkeys safe during the night. Some insects even sleep under the leaf that will be their next meal. A bee may climb down into a flower to rest. When it climbs out the next morning, it is rested and ready for work.

(2022·河南·中考真题)Joey was happy because he had many special friends four squirrels (松鼠), two rabbits, and many colorful birds. At the meal time, these wild animals came near to the family and they would feed these special friends.
In the large yard stood thirteen trees of different sizes. One day, while Joey was playing with his sister under the trees, he noticed that a tree trunk (树干) had a sad look. He ran into the house to tell his mom about it. She told Joey to find the reason why it was sad.
So Joey went into the yard, ran to the sad tree and asked, “Why are you unhappy ”
“I am the smallest tree around. The birds don’t fly to me. The rabbits don’t eat grass under me. The squirrels don’t climb to my top. Nobody needs me or loves me,” replied the sad tree.
After knowing the reason, the family had a meeting. Joey suggested making a seat under the sad tree. Joey’s father said he could help make a seat around the tree. The family would sit under the tree and the tree wouldn’t feel sad anymore.

(2024·河南洛阳·二模)In a US study that studied the health information of 50,000 people over seven years, researchers found that those who made breakfast the largest meal of the day were more likely to have a lower body mass index (BMI,体重指数) than those who ate a large lunch or dinner.
However, studies have shown that giving up dinner increases the risk of physical illness, according to Courtney Peterson, the study’s author at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
“For those who eat dinner later, their risk of obesity (肥胖) and diabetes (糖尿病) goes through the roof. While it seems breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it might actually be dinner,” she says. “Our blood sugar control is best early in the day. When we eat dinner late, that’s when we’re weak because our blood sugar is the worst.”
Researchers designed a study in which 52 women took part in a 12-week weight loss programme. All had the same number of calories (卡路里) over the day, but half had breakfast, while the other half did not. What they found was that it wasn’t breakfast itself that caused the people who joined this study to lose weight: it was changing their normal routine.
When you have been eating less and less, and the blood sugar in your body drops, your body will produce something named “cortisol (皮质醇)” that specifically has a great influence on blood sugar. But it can also create stress in the body, making you feel sad and nervous.

(2024·河南省直辖县级单位·一模)I grew up in a poor family. My dad died when I was three, leaving my mom with the job of raising nine kids. She had two jobs every day and she was a very hard worker. In order to make ends meet, she hardly ever rested.
My mom did all she could to support our family. Though we kids didn’t get what we wanted, we always got the things we needed. With my mom as my role model, I learned that hard work is the best way to get what you want.
While growing up, I never considered myself as a person in a difficult situation. I saw my life more as a card that had been dealt to me and I tried to make the most of it.
Of course, I dreamed about what I would be. At first, I wanted to be a soldier. Then I decided to be a driver. I even thought about being a footballer.
Surprising as it might seem, basketball wasn’t in my plans. I only started playing basketball on a team when I was in middle school. I loved to compete and worked hard to win.
For me, it paid off. I just let my success in basketball take its course, but I always put the effort in every day.
No matter what I did, some people expected me to fail, saying, “Karl can’t do it.” Instead of letting people like that get to me, I continued to prove (证明) them wrong. I tried my best to make my family proud.
While everyone else was looking up to popular sports stars, actors and musicians, my mom was my hero. She taught me that hard work pays off.
At the end of my life, I don’t want to be remembered as the kind of person who just sat on his bottom and said, “I’ve made it.” I don’t want to say that I get what I have now without putting in much effort. Sure there are days that I don’t feel like working hard…but I do it anyway. And that’s how I’m working toward becoming a successful basketball player.

Sharla began, “I think the volcano should be smooth.”
“And,” jumped in Lee, “I think it should look rocky, like a real mountain.”
“I see,” said Mrs. Holt. “What do you think, Tess ”
“Well, I’ve been making buildings for the village. I think it would be clean if we could show lava (岩浆) flowing (流动) down toward the village.”
“That’s a great idea. The flowing lava would be smooth. Right, Mrs. Holt ” cut in Sharla.
“Yes, I guess so.” Mrs. Holt said.
Sharla continued. “The other side of the mountain, where there’s no lava, would look rocky. Right ”
Tess caught on. “So one side can be smooth, and the other side can be rough (粗糙的). Let’s go finish!”
Sharla, Tess, and Lee stood proudly behind their volcano model. Mrs. Holt quieted the class. Then the girls introduced the model excitedly.
Later, Mrs. Holt had a question. “Can you tell about the steps you went through to complete your project ”
The girls hadn’t expected this. Sharla felt her face turn red, but she spoke up.
“At first we didn’t agree about what we wanted. It took us a while to make a plan and get it done.”
Tess went on, “We thought that everybody had a job to do.”
“And everybody has good ideas, even if they’re not what you expect,” added Lee.
Mrs. Holt looked pleased. The girls learned how to work together, she thought. Not bad.

(2023·河南周口·三模)They’ve been extinct (灭绝) for more than 65 million years. They left no pictures but libraries were filled with books about them. Yet, they live on in the imaginations of people. Mention the word “dinosaur” to anyone and you’re sure to have something to talk about.
We have known about these strange living things for more than 200 years. Their fossil (化石) record was first discovered in 1818. The word “dinosaur” was created in 1842 by a scientist who put two Greek words together.
What we know about dinosaurs comes only through the fossil record they left behind. We can get an idea of how they looked by building their skeletons (骨架) with fossilized bones and teeth. They must have been amazing as they towered high above the other living things of their time. We do know that they lived on land and walked. Some walked on two legs. Others preferred four legs. Some were fast and others were quite slow.
We have a pretty good picture of their size and structure, but not much else is known for certain. For example, what color were they Nobody knows. Did they cry like lions, or were their voices sweet and musical like birds Again, how can we know The fossil record does not speak.
Keep in mind that what we don’t know about dinosaurs is far greater than what we do know about them. As with a lot of researches about that era, scientists often have to read between the lines.

Spring is a good time to start planning a vegetable or flower garden. Here is some fun work to do before you are ready to put your first plants in the ground. ※ Consider a topic If you have not decided what you want to plant in your garden, you can use a topic to guide you. If you want to plant vegetables, you can do a “pizza garden” that includes what you will plant. ※ Draw an outline (草图) Whether you or your family want to plant a new garden next spring or change one you already have, you can start by drawing an outline for it.
Go outside and measure (测量) your garden or the area where you’re like to plant a new one. Draw a simple outline of the garden on a paper. Add plants already there. Pencil in what you’d like to plant this year.
※ Prepare the space It’s important to wait to plant your garden until the last frost (霜冻) has happened in your area. Even if it’s not time to plant, you can start working on the soil as long as it isn’t too wet from winter rains. ※ Start your plants If you want to grow some of your plants from seeds (种子), plant the seeds in small containers (容器) and place them in the sun. Once the ground is warm enough for you to plant outside, you can move them into your garden.
