Presentation I. The present participle as the adverbial Read the sentences below and try to identify what kind of adverbial the V-ing functions as. 1. Hearing the news, they immediately set off for Shanghai. 2. Being tired, I stopped to have a rest. 3. Working harder at English,you will make greater progress. 4. Feeling exhausted, they still kept running. 5. She lay on the grass, staring at the sky for a long time. 现在分词作状语(修饰动词)时, 可表时间、原因、条件、方式、伴随、让步等情况,其逻辑主语必须是句子的主语,构成主动关系,其作用相当于状语从句或并列句。 1. 作时间状语(when, while, until) eg. Seeing the police, he made a run for the exit. 一看到警察,他就朝出口奔去。 (分析:see的动作是由其逻辑主语“he”发出,与句子的主语he一致,且构成主动关系,所以用动词-ing形式。) _______________________, he made a run for the exit. 2.作原因状语(since, because或as) eg. Being ill, he didn’t go to school yesterday. Because___________, he didn’t go to school yesterday. 3.作条件状语(if, once或unless) Working hard at your lessons, you will succeed. Pay attention 1) 动词-ing形式作状语时,其逻辑主语必须与句子的主语一致. l Looking out of the window, the garden was beautiful. l Looking out of the window, we found the garden beautiful. Pay attention 2)当--ing表示的动作发生在谓语动词之前时,应使用完成式: having done.否定式在前加not。 1. Having finished his homework, he rushed out to play basketball. 2.Not having studied his lessons very hard, he rushed out to play basketball.
