Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead in T: On Chinese New Year’s Eve, we always sit at the table for the New Year’s dinner. We watch the Spring Festival gala and enjoy the feast. But let’s look at these two pictures. The pictures show that on this day, there are some people who cannot reunite with their family. Because of the COVID-19, they give up the chance to stay with their family and volunteer to help Wuhan. My students, if you are a doctor or a nurse, how would you choose In our life, how can we make a better choice without regret Today let’s learn about a person, let’s have a look, how did she make choices in her life. Step 2 Pre-reading Activity1 Prediction T: Look at the title and the picture in the textbook and answer the questions. The title is mother of ten thousand babies. 1.Who is the mother Yes, Lin Qiaozhi. 2.What aspects will the text talk about The text is probably about the life stories of Lin Qiaozhi. Step3 While-reading Activity 1 Skimming--Read for a style T: let’s skim the whole passage and answer these two questions. Skimming means you don’t have to read all the words one bye one, you just have to take a quick look at the title, pictures, key words, phrases and topic sentences. 1.What kind of text is it A brief biography of Lin Qiaozhi. 2.How does the writer develop the text By time. Activity 2 Scanning--Read for details T: Read paragraph 1 and answer the questions. 1.How did the writer introduce the topic By quoting Dr Lin’s words. 2.What’s the function of these words Giving the topic of the text. 3.What’s the topic of the text The hard choices and important events of Lin Qiaozhi’s life. T: Read paragraph 2-6 and find out all of the important events in Lin Qiaozhi’s life and finish the timeline. Time Important eventsIn 1901She was born. In 1906Her mother died.At age 18/At age 26She graduated from Peking Union Medical College with the Wenhai Scholarship.From age 26 to age 27She was named a chief resident physician.A few years laterShe was sent to study in Europe.In 1939She was sent to study in the US.In 1941She became the first Chinese woman to be appointed director of the OB-GYN department of the PUMC Hospital.During the warHer department was closed.From 1954 to 1983She was elected to the first National People’s Congress. She held many important positions.22nd April 1983she died.
T: We have read the whole passage and know there are five choices that she made. According to these choices, we can infer the personality of Dr.Lin. Let’s look at one hard choice. Here is a background. She was taking the entrance exam for a medical university in Beijing. During the exam, the students next to her fainted. Lin had a choice: should she finished the exam or should she stop and help the student Can you guess her first choice Yes, she chose to help the student. So what kind of person is she She is selfless and kind. T: Read paragraph 2 and answer the question: what’s Lin’s second choice. Here she had two choices: to marry or to study medicine. She chose to study medicine. So what kind of person is she She is determined and strong-willed. T: Read paragraph 3 and answer the question: what’s Lin’s third choice. Here she had two choices: stay in the US or go back home. She chose to go back home. So what kind of person was she She is patriotic. T: From paragraph 3, we can know Lin’s great achievements, so what great achievements did she make T: From these things, we can know that Dr. Lin is a great person! T: Read paragraph 4 and answer the question: what’s Lin’s fourth choice. Here she has two choices: stop helping people in need or continue to help. She chose to continue to help. So what kind of person was she She is helpful and sympathetic. T: Read paragraph 5 and answer the question: what’s Lin’s fifth choice. Here she has two choices: hold important positions or continue to work as a professional in the medical field. She chose to continue to work. So what kind of person was she She is responsible, caring and generous. T: Read paragraph 6 and answer the question: what’s Lin’s sixth choice. Here she has two choices: continue to rescue her life or give up her life. She chose to give up her life. And here are two questions for you. 1.Why was Lin Qiaozhi known as “the mother of ten thousand babies” Because she had delivered over 50000 babies in her lifetime. 2.What did Dr. Lin do when she died She left her savings to a kindergarten and a fund for new doctors. T: From all of these things, so we can know she is respectable and devoted person. Activity 3 Discuss the qualities of Lin Qiaozhi Now let’s discuss the qualities of Lin Qiaozhi through the whole passage. T: What an amazing person she is! Activity 4 Further Thinking T: The main life principle of Dr.Lin is... her devotion to others without any thought of herself. T: So maybe it’s the real meaning of “morals and virtues”. T: Thinking.
