Oral Presentation of the listening and speaking
I. Analysis of the Teaching Contents
This is the Unit 3 in Book 1 of New Standard English for Senior High School. The theme is "Sports and Fitness". In this unit something about sports is presented such as sports events, sportsmanship and the culture of sports. In this listening and speaking part, the text is about one
person invites his or her friends to a sports event and their opinions about sports, which is related to students' daily life and are aroused interest of students. It calls for students to enjoy sports, learn from the sportsmanship and have a general understanding of sports culture.
Analysis of the students
Senior one students are full of curiosity and thirst for knowledge. They can better obtain basic information such as what, when and where, but they still need to improve in combing and integrating information. In terms of oral expression, students have a general understanding of how to invite friends to a sports event, but their grasp of the use of some sentence patterns is not accurate and the relevant knowledge reserve is not systematic and comprehensive. In terms of pronunciation, they do not pay much attention to pronunciation, intonation and stress, which is difficult to be flexibly used in daily communication.
Teaching objectives
1)Teaching aims concerning linguistic knowledge
Students can have a general understanding of the following expressions of how to invite on the basis of listening.
Would you like to… / How about… / Do you want to… / Why not do…
Students can perceive the change of the stress, pronunciation, intonation and tone of the listening materials.
(Justification: Language is the basics of English learning. The purpose of learning the language knowledge is to develop the language application ability, which can contribute to the daily communication.)
2)Teaching aims concerning learning abilities
Students are able to catch the key information according to change of the stress, intonation and pronunciation in the listening material.
Students are able to present an oral invitation to a sports event and express own ideas clearly and logically.
(Justification: Ss should not only learn the knowledge, but use and adjust English strategies actively and expend English channels so as to increase the efficacy of English learning.)
3) Teaching aims concerning thinking capacities
Students can analyze the attitude or intention of the speaker by the stress, tone or intonation while listening.
Students are able to organize and summarize the expressions of how to invite to a sports event and voice their own opinions about sportsmanship logically.
(Justification: Cultivating thinking capacity helps students enhance their ability to analyze and solve the problems.)
4)Teaching aims concerning cultural awareness
Students can show great concern on the sport current events in reality.
Students can acquire sports cultural language and learn from the sportsmanship.
(Justification: Ss should understand the mainstream sports in Britain and America and the common pursuits of sportsmanship at home and aboard according to the General Senior High School Curriculum Standards.
Important points
Students can obtain some culture about sports events.
Students are able to invite a friend to a sports event appropriately by using the expressions learnt in class.
(Justification: This topic is common in daily communication and the expressions of how to invite is practical.)
Difficult points
Students can infer the key information of materials by the change of the stress and intonation.
Students can state selves clearly by utilizing the stress, intonation or tone.
(Justification: Ss’ ability of combining and integrating the information is still deficient, which is difficult for Ss to make inferences and state own ideas.)
Teaching methods
Task-based language teaching is adapted in this lesson. One task concerning the main idea of this listening material is designed for students to complete by solo. Then the next task for students is to listen for specific information and catch some useful expressions of inviting. Moreover, students will finish the task that is to invite friends to a sports event in pairs with the words, sentence patterns and expressions. Finally, some statements are presented and students exchange their opinions in group of four. These tasks, designed for students, is a process from input to output. Consequently, students will consolidate they learned in time and are completely involved in learning.
III. Instructions on students learning strategies
1.Listening strategy
Listening is a silent and individual activity. There are two levels in the act of listening: A general recognition task of preserving the theme and the topic on the basis of visual signals. A cognitive task of obtaining the specific information in the materials, utilizing expressions in daily communication. Therefore, students need to develop some listening strategies such as intensive listening, extensive listening, global listening, selective listening and so on. In this lesson students are instructed to develop the mentioned listening strategies above.
2.Communicative strategy
It is important to make students learn that some non-verbal devices such as gestures, facial expressions, body language contribute to verbal expressions to state themselves clearly and logically in the oral presentation in group and class.
3.Resource strategy
It is important channel for students to learn from the sports events in their reality as well as books, magazines, and the Internet. Students should develop their ability to collect useful and needed information from a vast sea of information in the information era. Simultaneously, students are required to search information to complete the tasks in the assignment after class.
IV. Teaching procedures
The pre-listening stage
Step 1: lead in
Activity ①: Describe and answer
A picture about a girl jogging is presented. And students are required to describe it as detailed as possible and answer the following two questions:
1)What sports do you like
2)What do you think sports and exercise can do for you
(Justification: This step is to introduce the topic to Ss and activate the expressions of this topic.)
Step 2: Set the scene
Activity ②: Look and learn
Students are required to look at the posters, especially pay attention to the sentence patterns, and then answer the questions:
What sports do you like to watch or try Why
Next the students will learn the culture of sports with the leading of teacher.
Activity ③: Watch and note
Students are required to watch a video about esports and take notes when watching. After watching, students are required to talk about what esports are and give some examples they know.
(Justification: These tasks are designed for Ss to present the background information, which can arouse interest of Ss and prepare them for the next step.)
The while-listening stage
Step 3: Extensive listening
Activity ④: Listen and choose
Students are required to listen to conversation 1 and choose the main idea of it. While listening, Ss are required to try to catch the gist instead of remembering and each word.
(Justification: Ss can perceive the change of the stress and know how to listen for the gist through this activity.)
Step 4: Intensive listening
Activity ⑤: Listen and circle
Listen to conversation 1 again and circle the stressed words.
Activity ⑥: Listen and fill
Adam is inviting Julie to a sports event. Listen to the conversation 2 and fill the blanks.
Activity ⑦: Listen, match and circle
Three students are talking about sportsmanship. Listen to the conversation and match each opinion with the right speaker. Who do you agree with Why
Listen again and circle the expressions that you hear in the conversation.
(Justification: While listening, Ss can know how to listen for specific information accumulate some expressions of how to voice their opinions.)
The post-listening stage
Step 5: Oral practice
Activity ⑧: Brainstorm
Students are required to have a brainstorm in group of 4 about the expressions that they use to invite others and to accept or refuse the invitation. Write them down in the table.
Activity ⑨: Dialogue
John is a fresh student of high middle school and loves sports very much. He wants to invite his friend to a sports event. What event or activity would he like to invite his friend to Please make a conversation with your partner according to the expressions in Activity⑧.
Activity ⑩: State your idea
There are four statements below. You are required to choose one to discuss with your group members. Do you agree or disagree it why What is the sportsmanship in your mind An example is provided for you.
A soccer player should not pretend to fall down even if it helps his/her team.
In school teams, everyone should get a chance to play, not only the best players.
It is wrong to pay people millions of yuan to play sports.
Athletes should play only for their own country.
Example:
A: I agree with the idea that a soccer player should never pretend to fall down even if it helps his or her team. You should never cheat.
B: Exactly! It's important to do the right thing.

(Justification: In this part, Ss can apply the expressions they learnt to oral practice, which can examine the learning outcomes and practice the oral English.)
Step 6: Summary and homework
Summary: The teacher summarizes how to invite friend to a sports event and reply an invitation, and how to voice own opinions.

Ss are required to finish one of the assignments:
Heping Middle School will hold a sports meeting on Friday, May 22, 2022. Li Lei, the student delegate, will write a letter to invite headmaster to attend as a guest. Please help him to write an invitation letter no less than 250 words and here is a sample for you.
