教 材 分 析 The unit topic is languages around the world. The thematic context of this text is man and society. The text type is exposition. The title of the text has two parts: The central topic is “Chinese Writing System” and the interpretation of its role in “connecting the past and the present”. This text aims to make students understand the functions and development history of Chinese writing system, think about the relationship between the development of Chinese writing system and the inheritance of Chinese culture, strengthen their sense of pride, identity and confidence in Chinese culture.
学 情 分 析 Students are active, curious and eager to learn something new, but they are short of language accuracy in speaking. Students lack the skills to understand articles quickly, so students should be guided to focus on reading strategies, such as predicting, skimming, scanning and careful reading. The teacher should use the exploration of the function and importance of Chinese writing system to help students develop critical thinking ability, and enhance their cultural confidence and awareness of inheriting Chinese culture.
教 学 目 标 In this class, students will be able to: 1.get familiar with the development history of the Chinese writing system. 2.enhance learning ability through predicting, skimming, scanning and careful reading. 3. reflect on the future of the Chinese writing system. 4. understand the importance and functions of the Chinese writing system and express their pride in Chinese culture.
教 学 重 难 点 Teaching key points: 1. Students are supposed to read this expository text and understand the structure of the text. 2. Students are supposed to use skimming and scanning skills to quickly find the relevant information in the reading text. Teaching difficult points: 1. Students are supposed to understand the development history of Chinese characters. 2. Students are supposed to know the relationship between Chinese characters and the inheritance of Chinese culture.
课 前 准 备 Firstly, determine the teaching objectives and clarify the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be taught. Secondly, according to the needs and characteristics of students, set students’ learning goals. Finally, carefully read and analyze the content of the textbook to understand the overall structure of the textbook and the relationship between various parts.
教 学 方 法 Teaching methods are task-based language teaching and communicative approach. Task-based language teaching requests students to learn language and culture knowledge in an integrated way. The communicative approach is based on the interactional theory. Learning methods are autonomous learning and cooperative learning.
教 学 过 程 Step 1: Lead in(3mins) Look at the picture and guess what the Chinese character is. Describe the change of the Chinese character ‘马’. Purpose: To activate students’ background knowledge and introduce the topic of the text. Step 2: Pre-reading(2mins) Predicting: Look at the title and the picture, guess what may talk about in the text. Purpose: To arouse students’ reading expectation. Step 3: While-reading(26mins) Skimming: Skim the text to find the main idea of each paragraph. 2. How many parts can be divided (structure) Purpose: To sharpen students’ analytical skill and reading skill. Scanning: Answer the question: What is the text type Purpose: To let students pay attention to the type of the text. Careful reading: Task 1: Read and answer(pair work) Q: What is China widely known for (Para1) A. The many ups and downs in its history. B. The Chinese writing system. C. Its modern civilization. D. Its ancient civilization. Purpose: To facilitate students’ self reading ability. Task 2: Read and answer(group work) Work in groups and answer the question “How does the Chinese writing system connect the past and the present ” Purpose: To improve students’ ability of cooperative exploration. Task 3: Read and think What other things does written Chinese connect Purpose: To help students further organize the detailed information and integrate the importance of the Chinese writing system. Step 4: Post-reading(6mins) Critical thinking Discussion: Do you think the Chinese language might become more widely used than English in the future Why Purpose: 1. To deepen the theme-meaning exploration. 2. To enhance students’ cultural self-confidence. Step 5: Summary(2mins) Retell the structure of the text. Purpose: To help students reflect their learning process. Step 6: Homework(1min) Draw a mind map to show the development and the importance of the Chinese writing system, and then retell the passage based on the mind map they’ve drawn. Purpose: To consolidate the knowledge learned in class.
