Finding a new book to read can be hard. Here are several different ways you can find your next favorite book to read!
Local Library
Most libraries allow anyone to walk in and look around. Head over to the sections that interest you and browse the shelves, then use your phone to look up any books that catch your eye. Or if you want to support your local library, just check the book out. You could also talk to the librarian. If you tell them what kinds of books you’re looking for, they’ll be able to point you in the right direction.
Online Book Stores
Amazon, AbeBooks, and Better World Books are all great options. Most online book stores allow sorting by recent releases, and it’s a great way to discover books you’ve never heard of before. Check out the first few pages’ previews, reviews and ratings, and if you like it, buy it!
Meetup Book Clubs
If you prefer to get your book recommendations through dialogue and discussion, then Meetup might be the option for you. Book clubs on Meetup are pretty straightforward; they tell you which book to read, and then you discuss it as a group. Meetup groups might hold events once a month, once a week, or maybe even multiple times a week. If one group isn’t enough, you can always join multiple.
Goodreads
One of the easiest ways to discover new books to read is to use a book recommendation site like Goodreads. Every year, Goodreads puts out “Best Books” for all major genres (体裁), including Fantasy, Horror, Poetry, Romance, and Young Adult. Each genre has 20 entries, and you can view past years’ awards back to 2011. Once you’ve added and rated enough books, Goodreads will begin recommending other books that you might like.
21.What help can you receive from a local library
A.Financial support. B.The librarian’s assistance.
C.Group study. D.Advice on book choice.
22.What’s special about Meetup Book Clubs
A.They hold reading activities on a daily basis. B.They sort out books by recent releases.
C.They offer group discussions about books. D.They allow members to get books for free.
23.Which of the following recommends books based on your preference
A.Local Library. B.Online Book Stores.
C.Meetup Book Clubs. D.Goodreads.

Bees are cute and give us delicious things, like honey, and useful things, like beeswax. But they’ve also got those infamous stingers (螫刺). Bees can be a little scary, and in groups, they can be deadly. So when reports hit the news about Colony Collapse Disorder (蜂群崩溃症候群), some of us might have thought, what’s the big deal
What would happen if all the bees died Unfortunately, we’d lose a lot more than organic candles if bees went extinct. There are more than 20,000 species of bees in the world, Together, they are probably the most important group of insect pollinators (传粉者). If all the bees suddenly disappeared, there would be a gap in our ecosystems that would be very hard to fill. First, flowers would likely go extinct without bees. Other plants that bees pollinate might survive with other pollinators. But they would be at a disadvantage.
Some animals rely on bees for food. If we lost the bees, some of our most beautiful natural species could be next. All these changes would have chain effects throughout ecosystems and into human society. Humanity probably wouldn’t starve without bees with many of our main crops pollinated by the wind. But nutritious fruits and vegetables could be lost or become so expensive that few people could afford them. And eating healthily is hard enough as it is .It’s hard to know just how such a huge change to the natural world would end.
Luckily, this is just an imagination, right But, Colony Collapse Disorder is very real. Scientists believe human activity is to blame. The loss of bees has also been linked to the pesticides we use and to man-made climate change. And some studies showed that it’s not just bees. Insect numbers have dropped dramatically over the last few decades. Nearly half of all insect lives may have died out in the last 35 years. Bees and other bugs may be a little scary, but a world without them would be much scarier.
24.How does the author lead in the topic in Paragraph 1
A.By listing the harms bees bring about. B.By explaining a theory about bees.
C.By reviewing the history of bees. D.By telling facts about bees.
25.Why are bees important in the ecosystem
A.They help control other insects’ populations. B.They provide honey and beeswax.
C.They serve as a key link in the ecosystem. D.They pollinate our main crops.
26.What is the possible danger if bees died out
A.Loss of biodiversity and food variety. B.Endangered insects becoming extinct.
C.Climate change speeding up its pace. D.The rapid growth of certain flowers.
27.Which can be a suitable title for the passage
A.Bees: Cute But Dangerous. B.Colony Collapse Disorder Is Real.
C.Honey: A Double Edged Sword. D.Bees Are a Threat to Humans.

Lab-grown chicken is finally making its way onto menus in the United States. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently given permission for selling cell-cultured (细胞培养的) meat produced by GOOD Meat and UPSIDE Foods, marking a significant breakthrough for the cultured meat industry. These companies are able to grow small amounts of chicken cells into meat without the need for traditional slaughter (屠宰). However, it’s important to note that this permission is currently limited to chicken products. Both companies still require additional permission to market cell-cultured beef, pork, or seafood.
Concerns have been growing among Americans about traditional meat production, which contributes to about 14.5 percent of global carbon emissions and can encourage antibiotic-resistant (耐抗生素的) bacteria growth. Additionally, it pollutes waterways with animal waste. And the animals themselves often live relatively short lives in cages. “We think the current way of traditional meat production is at the very tip of the spear of all these harms,” says GOOD Meat CEO Josh Tetrick.
Despite these concerns, meat remains a significant part of many people’s diets due to cultural, traditional, and nutritional reasons. Cultured meat companies position themselves as producing sustainable and proper meat, aiming to provide meat lovers with a guilt-free choice that satisfies their desire for tasty food.
The production process for lab-grown meat is relatively straightforward, with the main challenge lying in building sufficient production facilities. Both companies, now armed with USDA and FDA permission, can focus on expanding to produce enough cell-cultured meat to meet the demand. At the beginning, lab-grown chicken will only be available at select restaurants, including Bar Crenn in San Francisco and a restaurant owned by chef José Andrés in Washington. D. C.
28.What does the approval mean for GOOD Meat and UPSIDE Foods
A.They can sell lab-grown meat in the U. S.
B.They don’t have to kill animals for meat.
C.They can develop cell-cultured meat in labs.
D.They can offer various types of lab-grown meat.
29.What does “at the very tip of the spear” underlined in Paragraph 2 mean
A.The best solution. B.The major challenge.
C.The greatest change. D.The biggest reason.
30.What can we learn from traditional and cultured meats
A.Traditional meat has more cultural meanings.
B.Cultured meat is more environmentally friendly.
C.Cultured meat faces fierce market competition.
D.People can only eat lab-grown meat in the future.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.Cultured meat challenges traditional dieting custom.
B.Environmental pollution on traditional slaughter.
C.US Government permits cultured meat’s production.
D.A technological innovation in cultured meat.

Jennifer Destefano answered a call from a number she did not recognize. “Mom, these bad men have me,” her daughter’s voice told her, crying. A man continued to demand money, or he would drug her daughter and leave her in Mexico. But while she kept him on the phone, friends managed to reach her daughter, only to discover that she was free and well on a skiing trip in Arizona. The voice used on the phone was a fake (冒充品).
In fact, voice cloning has far-reaching influences. A brief sample of a particular individual voice can be used to train an AI model, which can then speak any given text sounding like that person. The feature is to be included in iPhone’s new operating system IOS 17 to help people who may be in danger of losing their voices. ElevenLabs, an AI startup, offers users the chance to create their own clones in minutes. When generating a recording, the system also offers a controller that allows users to choose between variability, a lifelike intonation (语调), and stability, similar to a calm newsreader, both accurate.
With cloning coming, voices claiming to be someone may prove to be fakes. That disturbs financial industry (金融业), which uses voice as an important identification. In journalism, fewer people will trust news based on recordings. The opposite problem will arise when public figures refuse to admit their genuine recordings. Now, ever more people caught up in illegal behaviors will be attracted by the defence, “It wasn’t me.”
Creative industries could face challenges too. Voice actors’ skills, trained over a lifetime, can be taken away in a matter of seconds. The Telegraph recently reported on actors who had mistakenly given up rights to their voices, making it possible to clone them for nothing. But as the old saying goes, a coin has two sides. Val Kilmer, who has lost much of his voice to throat cancer, was delighted to have his voice restored for Top Gun: Maverick. And some others may be spared heading to the studio for retakes.
32.Why does the author talk about Destefano’s experience
A.To explain why Destefano was cheated. B.To praise a mother’s love for her daughter.
C.To teach people how to recognize fake voices. D.To draw readers’ attention to voice cloning.
33.What can be learned from Paragraph 2
A.Cloning voices can be variously styled. B.IOS trains people disabled in speaking.
C.Cloning one’s voice is time-consuming. D.AI learns human voice from texts.
34.What impact may voice cloning make
A.Financial industry will abandon voice identification.
B.Broadcasting will disappear in journalism.
C.Criminals use it as an excuse to escape punishment.
D.Public figures dare not make recordings.
35.What is voice cloning’s influence in creative industries
A.Disastrous. B.Double edged. C.Beneficial. D.Short-termed.

How to Make New Year’s Resolutions
Do you make resolutions in the new year 36 However, You will give yourself your best shot at success if your resolutions are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound).
Specific. Your resolutions should be absolutely clear. Making a specific goal is really important rather than just roughly saying “I want to lose weight.” How much weight do you want to lose and how long will it last 37
Measurable. Establish standards for measuring progress toward the achievement of each goal you set. If, for example, you want to learn a foreign language, memorize 20 words or practise speaking it for 30 minutes every day. 38

Realistic. 40 Are you willing to devote time and energy to it You truly know that it can be accomplished with your abilities and resources available to you. When you identify the goals, you begin to figure out ways that you make them come true.
Time-bound. The timeline toward reaching your goals should be clear and realistic. That means having enough time to do them with lots of smaller goals set up along the way. Focus on these small achievements, and you can make gradual progress.
A.Does this goal really matter to you B.You can make plans to achieve them. C.They are more easily made than achieved. D.The following tips can help achieve your resolutions. E.But trying to take too big a step too fast can make you disappointed. F.Five pounds in the next two months—that’s going to be more effective. Life at 16 took an unexpected turn when my parents decided to move our family from Texas to Arizona. In just two weeks, I had to say goodbye to my beloved teachers, dearest classmates and my best friends. I felt a sense of blame toward my parents for what seemed like turning my world upside down. I told everyone I’d be returning to Texas as soon as possible.
Upon arriving in Arizona, I made sure everyone knew I had friends waiting for me back in Texas. I was determined to keep my distance, firmly believing that I’d be leaving soon. The first day of school was a painful experience as I missed my friends in Texas badly. My life felt like it had come to an end.
Eventually though, things got a little better. In my art class, sitting just three seats away from me in the same front row was an outgoing girl with the most beautiful blue eyes I had ever seen. Her talent in art shone through her creations, and her lively spirit drew me in. I saw inspiration and connection in her that I so badly needed. Gathering my courage, I decided to talk to her. “Hi, my name is Sheila; what’s yours ” I asked with a Texan accent.
The girl next to her thought that I was asking her. “Emily.” “Oh, hi, Emily,” I played along. “What’s your name ” I asked again, focusing my attention on the blue-eyed girl. She looked behind her, not believing that I could be asking her for her name. “Jessie,” she answered quietly. “Hi, Jessie!” I smiled and returned to my work, awkward but satisfied. Little did I know, that chance encounter would change the course of my life.

(六)One possible version
Sharing the love for art, Jessie, Emily and I quickly developed a close bond. Our shared passion for creativity led to countless afternoons spent drawing, painting, and exchanging ideas. We explored the art fairs, local exhibitions and museums in Arizona. These shared experiences not only developed our artistic growth but also deepened our friendship, making this new place feel a bit more like home.
As time passed, the pain of leaving Texas began to fade. Jessie expanded our tight group by introducing me to their inner circle of more new friends where I found an even stronger sense of belonging in this new place. The memories we created together not only made me feel more at home, but also brought me closer to the people who had become a whole part of my life. Arizona, once a source of uncertainty, had transformed into a place I proudly called home, and it was all thanks to the unbreakable bonds I had formed with these incredible people.

M: Yes, I am. What can I do for you
W: I bought this yesterday, but I didn’t look at the receipt until today — and I’m shocked that I didn’t get the discount that you were advertising. I thought that this item would be 25% off!
M: May I have a look Hmm…it says it was checked out on register four — that’s Heather. She is new on staff, so she probably didn’t know about the sale. I’m very sorry about that. I’ll fix the problem right away and get you some cash.

W: Hey, have you watched the new movie The Lost Treasure
M: No, I haven’t. Is it any good

M: Well, What’s it about
W: It follows a group of treasure hunters who went on a dangerous journey to find a long-lost treasure hidden in a remote island. Along the way, they encounter thrilling and unexpected adventures.
M: Who are the main actors
W: Well, the lead role is played by Tom Johnson. He does a phenomenal job in this movie. The supporting cast is also impressive, with talented actors like Emily Stone and Michael Wilson.

M: Hello, can I speak to Miss Leaney
W: This is Leaney. May I know who’s calling
M: I’m Adam Watt from the Seven Star Insurance Company. Thank you for your interest in our company. I need some more information from your side.
W: Oh, sure, Mr. Watt. Please go ahead.
M: You’ve got a degree in finance. Why did you apply for this job
W: I read the job description and discovered a few interesting programs that I’d like to be a part of. They’re challenging yet rewarding. Just the sort of things I consider to fit me best.
M: I see. But given your educational background, wouldn’t you want to work for some bigger companies
W: I prefer smaller companies to bigger ones, because a smaller business has the ability to be more flexible in its service offerings. In a small company, we can provide our customers with the exact service that they need. By doing this, we can form a closer relationship with our customers as if they were our neighbors or relatives.
M: That’s very interesting. When will you be available for employment
W: In two weeks. I’ve promised my parents a ten-day visit. I can start work immediately after I’m back.
M: Great. I will call you back in a couple of days about our final decision.
W: Okay. Thank you very much.

M: Hello, everyone. Today’s guest is just 14 years old, and he is protecting birds around the world. His name is Dessi Sieburth. His love of birds started when he made his first bird feeder about six years ago. Now, he has his own group called “Protecting Our Birds”. He has been making western bluebird boxes for about four years. Dessi hangs them up in trees and takes them down every week and looks at them to see if the bluebirds are nesting. He does that every year during the summer. He chooses the bluebird because they nest in dead trees, but a lot of dead trees are being cut down. Dessi makes these boxes to take the place of the trees. He does research about birds, runs a website to teach people about birds and how to help them, and builds boxes for birds. Dessi has interviewed biologists, written a lot of articles on birds for local newspaper. Dessi also recently spent 10 days in Alaska with his family where he did research on golden eagles in Denali National Park. So now let’s welcome Dessi Sieburth!
