David loved his grandson Philip dearly. The boy reminded him of himself at an early age. They had a lot of fun together, exploring the backyard and hiking in the nearby park. However, one weekend, Philip felt ill and had to stay in bed. David made sure to keep his grandson entertained by finding a book they could enjoy together.
Before handing it to Philip, he decided to leaf through it and look back at the story. However, while looking through it, he didn’t expect to see another piece of his youth, this time in the form of a photograph of him and his old friends. There were four in the picture — David, Steve, Dorothy, and Teresa. They were neighbors and often went to the beach together. In the photo, the four of them were playing on the sand.
Suddenly, David wondered about the people in the photograph, curious to know where life had taken them.
Philip noticed that and asked “What happened, Grandpa ” David smiled, excitedly taking the book and the photo to Philip. “Look, Philip. This is an old photo of my friends and me!” he said. “I wish I could meet them again.” Philip suggested looking for them on Facebook. Through Philip’s tablet, they searched for David’s friends. To Philip’s surprise, they weren’t on the social media platform.
David decided to go to his hometown to find Steve, Dorothy, and Teresa. The town had changed a lot and he found that Dorothy’s and Steve’s houses were no longer there. Still hopeful, David decided to visit the last address, which was Teresa’s. A young girl opened the door. “I’m sorry, young lady. I was just looking for Teresa Green, but I might have gotten the address wrong,” he said.

Thirteen vehicles lined up last March to race across the Mojave Desert, seeking a million in prize money. To win, they had to finish the 142-mile race in less than 10 hours. Teams and watchers knew there might be no winner at all, because these vehicles were missing a key part — drivers.
DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, organized the race as part of a push to develop robotic vehicles for future battlefields. But the Grand Challenge, as it was called, just proved how difficult it is to get a car to speed
across an unfamiliar desert without human guidance. One had its brake locked up in the starting area. Another began by throwing itself onto a wall. Another got tied up by bushes near the road after 1.9 miles.
One turned upside down. One took off in entirely the wrong direction and had to be disabled by remote control. One went a little more than a mile and rushed into a fence; another managed to go for six miles but stuck on a rock. The “winner”, if there was any, reached 7.8 miles before it ran into a long, narrow hole, and the front wheels caught on fire.
“You get a lot of respect for natural abilities of the living things,” says Reinhold Bebringer, who helped design two of the car-size vehicles for a company called Sci-Autonies, “Even ants can do all these tasks effortlessly. It’s very hard for us to put these abilities into our machines.”
The robotic vehicles, though with necessary modern equipment such as advanced computers and GPS guidance, had trouble figuring out fast enough the blocks ahead that a two-year-old human recognizes immediately. Sure, that very young child, who has just only learned to walk, may not think to wipe apple juice off her face, but she already knows that when there’s a cookie in the kitchen, she has to climb up the table, and that when she gets to the cookie, it will taste good. She is more advanced, even months old, than any machine humans have designed.
28.Why did the watchers doubt if any of the vehicles could finish the race
A.They did not have any human guidance. B.The road was not familiar to the drivers.
C.The distance was too long for the vehicles. D.The prize money was unattractive to the drivers.
29.What was the purpose of the race organized by DARPA
A.To raise money for producing more robotic vehicles.
B.To push the development of vehicle industry.
C.To train more people to drive in the desert.
D.To improve the vehicles for future wars.
30.In the race, what was the greatest distance one robotic vehicle covered
A.Almost two miles. B.Six miles.
C.About eight miles. D.About one mile.
31.What does the writer imply in the last paragraph
A.A robotic vehicle can finish a 142-mile race without any difficulties.
B.A little child who has just learned to walk can’t reach the cookie on the table.
C.A robotic vehicle can’t deal with a simple problem that a little child can solve.
D.A little child can understand the importance of wiping apple juice off her face.

Maths is all around us, from working out how to share the bill after a meal to calculating (计算) your household bills. Some people love the challenge of working out maths problems, but many fear the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry. It can seem discouraging, but this ‘maths anxiety’ is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they got tense and nervous doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, told the BBC she believes giving students, particularly girls, good role models “is significant, especially at a young age”. She thinks the key is to get people, especially women who love teaching maths, to teach younger children.
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says “It’s not clear why maths gives rise to so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s a right or wrong answer might make you more worried about underperforming.” And once we assume we’re not a ‘maths person’, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
Psychologists (心理学家) have been trying to work out why mental calculation can bring us out in a sweat. That fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears clearly can loosen their hold on you, and
encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat (威胁). We need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
32.Regarding “maths anxiety” in paragraph 1, the author thinks ______.
A.it is unique B.it is formal C.it is common D.it is necessary
33.What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A.Girls are better at maths than boys. B.Maths classes are difficult for all students.
C.Students’ anxiety results entirely from teachers. D.Confidence in maths needs developing in childhood.
34.What will be a potential result if one thinks he is not a ‘maths person’
A.He will rise to challenges. B.He will learn maths harder.
C.He will be doubtful about his ability. D.He will not see maths as a threat.
35.What are children advised to do according to the last paragraph
A.Track sources of maths fear regularly. B.Speak fears out for improvement bravely.
C.Explore causes of failure in maths carefully. D.Quit challenges to avoid anxiety actively.

Sometimes, it’s good to be bored
“I am dying of boredom,” complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov’s 1897 play Uncle Vanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom. 36
That is the finding of two fascinating recent studies. In one, researchers asked subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinkings. The result 37 In the second study, subjects gave more answers to a word test than a non-bored control group after being forced to watch a dull screensaver.
“An restless mind hungers for stimulation, so boredom becomes a seeking state,” says Sandi Mann, the psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire. “ 38 ” Parents will tell you that kids with “nothing to do” will eventually invent some fun games to play — with a cardboard box, a light switch, whatever.
The problem, the researchers worry, is that these days we don’t struggle to overcome these slow moments. “ 39 ” Mann says. “This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking.” So here is an idea: Instead of always avoiding boredom, embrace and face it. Sometimes, anyway. Mann has found she gets some of her best thinking done when she is driving her car and therefore can’t be distracted by her phone.
40 The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything. An important part of our modern task, then, is learning to evaluate these different types of boredom — to distinguish the useful kind from the harmful one.
A.And there is, of course, bad boredom.
B.Bored subjects came up with more creative ideas.
C.But what if boredom is a meaningful experience
D.These moments are a lot more valuable than expected.
E.Actually, tips on getting away from boredom are countless.
F.We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.
G.When not satisfied with your state, you’re seeking and engaged.

One day, Emma’s mother brought Emma to her favorite steak house She was excited all the way when she was sitting in her mother’s car. Listening to the wonderful music, she couldn’t help but dance in the back seat. Considering her safety, her mother had to stop her and said, “Hey! My sweety! Please be quiet and fasten your seat belt!”
“Okay! Mom,” she answered while continuing to roll down the car window.
“Emma! Don’t head out of the window! This is very dangerous! No hands either!” Mom raised his voice as she spoke.
She said yes and then quietly sat back in place. But there was no previous happiness. She got off in silence and ordered meals silently. Her mother thought that perhaps her tone had just been too urgent, and she tried to make her happy. “Sweetheart, this is a monthly steak appointment. Can you enjoy it with your mom happily ”
Emma nodded silently but continued to stare out of the window. Ten minutes later, Emma looked at the large plate of steak and potatoes as if she had no intention of eating them. Mom sighed and asked, “Isn’t it your favorite steak, sweetheart ” “It is, mom,” Emma said in a low voice. After listening to her answer, Mom brought the steak and planned to help her daughter cut it into small pieces as before.
“No, mom, she quickly reached out for the plate. “I can only eat it once a month, right ” “Yes, we made a promise about this,” said the mother.
“Can I just give it to him ” Emma cautiously asked, and her-eyes filled with expectations. Following the direction of her finger, there was a homeless man in tattered (破烂的) clothes. 25. 根据第三段“Suddenly, David wondered about the people in the photograph, curious to know where life had taken them.(突然,大卫对照片中的人产生了好奇,想知道生活把他们带到了哪里)”可知,当大卫翻阅这本书时,一张照片使他感到惊讶。故选B。
根据第四段“Philip suggested looking for them on Facebook.(菲利普建议在Facebook上找他们)”可知,菲利普在Facebook上帮助大卫寻找他的朋友。故选D。
根据倒数第二段“David decided to go to his hometown to find Steve, Dorothy, and Teresa. The town had changed a lot and he found that Dorothy’s and Steve’s houses were no longer there. Still hopeful, David decided to visit the last address, which was Teresa’s. A young girl opened the door. “I’m sorry, young lady. I was just looking for Teresa Green, but I might have gotten the address wrong,” he said.(大卫决定回家乡去找史蒂夫、多萝西和特蕾莎。小镇变了很多,他发现多萝西和史蒂夫的房子不在了。大卫仍然满怀希望,决定去拜访特蕾莎的最后一个住处。一个年轻女孩开了门。“对不起,小姐。我只是在找特蕾莎·格林,但我可能把地址搞错了,”他说)”以及最后一段“Suddenly, the girl shouted, “Grandma, you have a visitor!”(突然,小女孩喊道:“奶奶,有人来了!”)”

根据首段中的“Teams and watchers knew there might be no winner at all, because these vehicles were missing a key part — drivers.(车队和观众都知道,可能根本没有赢家,因为这些车缺少一个关键的部分——司机。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, organized the race as part of a push to develop robotic vehicles for future battlefields.(美国国防高级研究计划局(DARPA)组织了这场比赛,作为推动为未来战场开发机器人汽车的一部分。)”
根据第三段中的“The “winner”, if there was any, reached 7.8 miles before it ran into a long, narrow hole, and the front wheels caught on fire.(如果有“获胜者”的话,它跑了7.8英里后就撞进了一个又长又窄的洞里,前轮着火了。)”
根据尾段中的“The robotic vehicles, though with necessary modern equipment such as advanced computers and GPS guidance, had trouble figuring out fast enough the blocks ahead that a two-year-old human recognizes immediately.(尽管这些机器人车辆配备了先进的计算机和GPS导航等必要的现代设备,但它们很难足够快地识别出前面的街区,而一个两岁大的人却能立即识别出来。)”

根据第一段中“Some people love the challenge of working out maths problems, but many fear the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry. It can seem discouraging, but this ‘maths anxiety’ is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. (有些人喜欢解决数学题的挑战,但许多人害怕处理数字和数字的时刻,并感到真正的担忧。这似乎令人沮丧,但这种“数学焦虑”是完全正常的,你绝对不是一个人。)”可知,数学焦虑是非常普遍的,并且你绝对不是唯一一个感到焦虑的人。这表明作者认为数学焦虑是常见的。故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段中“The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be
affected. 以及“Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, told the BBC she believes giving students, particularly girls, good role models “is significant, especially at a young age”. She thinks the key is to get people, especially women who love teaching maths, to teach younger children.(波士顿大学奎斯特罗姆商学院的舒拉米特·卡恩告诉BBC,她认为给学生,尤其是女孩树立好榜样‘很重要,尤其是在年轻的时候’。 D选项“Confidence in maths needs developing in childhood.(对数学的信心需要在儿童时期培养。)”
根据第三段中“And once we assume we’re not a ‘maths person’, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.( 一旦我们认为自己不是一个‘数学人’”,我们就会避免解决我们可能会做的事情。)”
根据最后一段中“That fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears clearly can loosen their hold on you, and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat (威胁). We need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.( 这种恐惧的来源可能有很多,但一些人认为,清楚地表达你的恐惧可以放松它们对你的控制,并鼓励孩子将数学考试视为挑战,而不是威胁。我们需要积极地看待数学,给它第二次机会。)”可知,一些心理学家建议,清晰地表达你的恐惧可以减轻它们对你的控制,鼓励孩子们将数学测试视为挑战,而不是威胁。这表明孩子们被建议勇敢地说出他们的恐惧,以求改进。故选B。

Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom.(在契诃夫1897年的戏剧《万尼亚叔叔》中,年轻的妻子叶莲娜抱怨道:“我无聊得要死。” C项“But what if boredom is a meaningful experience (但如果无聊是一种有意义的体验呢 )”与上文构成转折关系,引出下文两项研究的新发现:无聊可以激发创造力,同时C项中“boredom is a meaningful experience”与下文中“That”构成指代关系。故选C。

39.设空句和下文“This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking.(这可能会让我们暂时缓解无聊,但它会阻止我们更深层次的思考)”都是Mann的观点,根据下文中“This might relieve us temporarily(这或许会让我们暂时放松)”可知,设空句会提到一种暂时缓解无聊的方法。F项“We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.(我们试图用移动设备打发无聊的每一刻)”中提出我们用移动设备打发无聊,与下文“This”构成指代关系,上下文语意连贯。故选F。
40.下文“The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything.(好的类型激励你看到它(带来的好的)结果。相反,糟糕的类型会让你感到疲惫,让你觉得自己什么都懒得做)”提到两种不同类型的无聊。A项“And there is, of course, bad boredom.(当然,也有糟糕的无聊)”引出下文对两种无聊类型的对比和讨论,上下文语意连贯。故选A。

故填was offered。

此处的position特指上文的“settled facedown onto the heated table and comfortably lay there”,应用定冠词the修饰。故填the。

I am terribly sorry to tell you that I’m unable to help you with your Chinese study.
We have been learning with each other for a long time and I am really grateful for your effective guidance, without which I wouldn’t have made such great advances in English. Also, I am happy to know that you have progressed a lot in Chinese. However, faced with the College Entrance Examinations, I have no time to surf the Internet regularly now. Would it be possible that we continue our communication after the exam
I would appreciate your understanding for forgiveness. Looking forward to studying with you online soon.
Best wishes!

67.范文
Emma quickly left the table with the full plate of food in hand. As Emma approached the homeless man, her eyes filled with empathy. She greeted him with a warm smile and handed him the plate of food. On receiving the food, the man could hardly conceal his excitement and thanked her joyfully. Meanwhile, Emma sat down beside him, engaging in a heartfelt conservation. Witnessing the moving scene, the mother felt a sense of satisfaction.
As Emma returned, her mother smiled proudly. Moved and delighted, her mother gave her a big hug and praised her for extending a helping hand to the homeless man outside. With another large plate of steak ordered on the table, a surge of happiness and warmth running Emma, she was so relieved that she tasted the steak happily. At that moment, the mother realized that Emma had taught her an invaluable lesson-the joy of giving. While the steak may have been Emma’s favorite, Emma understood the importance of sharing and making a difference in someone else’s life.
