教材分析
The first period of Using Language is a listening and speaking class whose topic is exploring the meaning of greatness.The listening material is a conversation between Dr.Wang,his daughter Wang Lin and his daughters'friend Anna Smith.In the listening part,students will know about some people with great qualities and learn to match them with the related information from the listening material.In the speaking part, students will learn to use cause-and-effect words and language fillers to express opinions and reasons about the great people they admire and have a good knowledge of the true meaning of greatness.
学情分析
Students have a basic understanding of great people after learning the text in Reading and Thinking and are eager to express their opinions in class.Besides,they grasp some basic listening skills.They know about some famous people with great qualities.However,they are not familiar with some great people who are not well-known and know little about their achievements.

By the end of the class,students will be able to: 1.use the strategies for noting down key words to acquire the speakers'opinions and
reasons; 2.apply language fillers to give themselves time to think while talking;
3.state their understanding and opinions of great people;
4.have a good knowledge ofthe true meaning ofgreatness.

Teaching key points: 1.Grasp the speakers'opinions of great people and reasons of admiration. 2.Use cause-and-effect words and language fillers to express opinions. Teaching difficult points: Talk about great people with cause-and-effect words and language fillers.

Step 1 Review(3min) Teacher shows a photo of Tu Youyou whom the students have learned about in the previous class.Teacher helps students conclude the great qualities of Tu Youyou by reviewing some sentences from the text. T:These great qualities make Tu Youyou a great person.Now let's see some other people and explore if they have some other great qualities. Purpose of design: Reviewing the previous class not only can help students consolidate what they have learned but also stimulate their interest to explore great qualities. Step 2 Pre-listening(2min) Teacher lets students look at the pictures from the textbook,asks students the names of the people in the pictures and introduces the names to them. Purpose of design: It is helpful for students to be familiar with the names of people that will appear in the listening material. Step 3 While-listening(2min) Activity 1 Listen for opinions.

Purpose of design: This activity can strengthen students'ability of grasping the key information including the achievements of the people whom students are unfamiliar with and some adjectives which can show the speakers'opinions while listening. Activity 2 Listen for reasons. Listen again and answer the questions below. 1.Why does Dr.O Wang say“money isn't everything ” 2.What is the real reason Anna admires the famous people,and what examples does she give 3.What kind of person do you think Wang Lin admires Why Purpose of design: This task aims to improve students'skills of listening for reasons by paying attention to expressions like because,due to and the information after the opinion or decision.Besides,it inspires students to think about the meaning of greatness. Step 4 Post-listening/Speaking(12min) Teacher shows students some pictures of different types of people. T:After listening about how other people express their opinions and reasons about the great people they admire,it's your turn to talk about the great people you admire. He or she can be a scientist like Isaac Newton,a politician like Sun Zhongshan,an inventor like Thomas Edison,a philosopher like Confucius,an artist like Mei Lanfang or just someone around you like your parents,your teachers or your classmates.
Activity 3 Make a dialogue. Interview your partner about a great person he/she admires and make a dialogue with some language fillers if possible. Eg.S1:Who is the person you most admire
S2:Oh,let me see.I admire ...because he/she ....How about you S1:Well,er,I think ... (Er/Oh/Um,)let me see/think ...Right./Sure.Well,er,..Really Anyway,..Well,I guess,..Just a moment.You see/know,..Hang on a second.So,...May I think about that for a moment I've nealy got it,er,...How can/shall/should I put this/it Well,it's on the tip of my tongue.
Teacher first introduces the definition of language fillers and gives some examples to help students understand.After the discussion,teacher asks some pairs of students to perform their dialogues.Students can finish like this: S1:Who is the person you most admire S2:0h,let me see.I admire Thomas Edison because he invented the light bulb and was not afraid offailures.How about you S1:Well,er,I think Tu Youyou is a great woman due to her contribution to the medical work. Purpose of design: Brainstorming the great people can inspire students to think about different types of great people and realize that great people can be anyone in any field,old or young, man or woman.Even ordinary people with good qualities can be regarded as great people.In addition,making a dialogue with a partner using language fillers can help students learn about the function of language fillers,get a better understanding of greatness and cultivate their creativity and thinking ability. T:Just now you talked about a great person you admire.He or she must have some great qualities which attract you.Now brainstorm the great qualities with your group members and discuss which is the most important quality to be a great person

Purpose of design: This activity is carried out with the aim of helping students know about the evaluation criteria for people's greatness and thus form the correct values.By discussing and presenting their opinions and reasons,students can not only develop their critical thinking ability and cooperative ability but also have a good knowledge of the true meaning of greatness. Step 5 Summary(1min) Teacher shows students a picture ofMonument to the People's Heroes.
