Candles were burning bright, exciting my two-year-old son, Jack, who moved forward to blow them out. Jack's third birthday was still a few months away but ever since his dad Gary's big day earlier that year, my son hadn't stopped talking about celebrating his own. His older brothers Oliver, 6, and Josh, 10, were happy to sing the birthday song with him.
But, over time, I grew concerned that Jack wasn't well. My lovely boy was now a shadow of his former self. How could I ignore it, though doctors weren't too concerned
One day I was at work and shared my fears with a colleague. She comforted me and said it was safe to be careful. When I returned home later, I packed a bag and took Jack to hospital. In the hospital, I just couldn't shake the feeling that bad news was coming. My suspicions (怀疑) were confirmed. We were told he had a very rare form of cancer. Jack was going downhill rapidly. Gary and I took it in turns to stay with him in the hospital.“Your birthday's coming up,” I told Jack each day, hoping he could remember the times we had sung him happy birthday before.
“Jack's only option is a stem cell transplant (干细胞移植), and a brother or a sister might be the best chance you have,” a doctor told us. “He can have my head if he needs it!” Josh cried. Oliver wasn't as enthusiastic as his older brother, but it was a huge relief when he was confirmed as a match. Doctors were cautious about saying Oliver might save Jack's life in case it didn't work as planned. To their relief, the result was comforting. They were moved by Oliver's bravery.
Oliver, now seven, really did save his little brother and they're now closer than ever.“I didn't want to do it at the very beginning but at the end I kind of regretted feeling like that because now I know how important it was,” he said.

A global citizen is someone who feels like they are a part of an emerging world community and someone who works to contribute to this society's values and beliefs. And global citizens see the world as a whole, value diversity and understand global issues.

Visit your city's Chinatown, attend a cultural festival, or tour the museum to become absorbed in diverse traditions and customs.
Knowing a second language can undoubtedly be extremely helpful for engaging and communicating with people across cultures. It is said that music is the food for one's soul and passion for many individuals. People want it during exercise, their work, and some folk wishes to have it even before sleeping. In particular, when you are around your friends, you want some delicious food in the combination of music.
Music increases energy, boosts confidence, reduces the state of feeling very sad and relaxes those who suffer from insomnia (失眠). Surprisingly, there is evidence suggesting that music enhances the verbal intelligence of children to comprehend words and explain their meanings. Therefore it may be concluded that you do not have to really abandon listening to music while studying as you fear you may lose focus. There are several types of music that actually help you dive deep into your subject. It is considered that music fixed at 60 beats in one minute can assist people in releasing out their stress and put their brain into ease and that certainly enhances your productivity.
Don Campbell, an expert on the power of music, wrote a book where he introduced the idea that classical music can prove to be an assisting tool for learning. He even said that classical music is a powerful catalyst (催化剂) to enhance the level of your productivity. The lack of words in classical music is possibly one of the reasons that this music is able to improve productivity and develop focus while you're studying. Words can distract you and engage you in the interpretation of meaning. It is said that if you are engaged in some writing work such as essay writing or your coursework assignment competition, this kind of music is helpful.
Everything that is natural suits human beings and puts their mind into a mode of relaxation. The cheerful singing of birds, the flow of streams and river, rain, etc. You can listen to tracks that have these natural sounds in them. Music that you can listen to while studying should be not too fast such as hip hop and rock music. Also, the volume should not be annoying for your nerves.

A.Music lovers prefer to make friends.
B.People are closely connected with music.
C.Different people choose music accordingly.
D.Music can always feed one's soul and passion.
33.How does music help children
A.By managing their emotions well.
B.By changing their attitude towards life.
C.By avoiding the state of feeling depressed.
D.By improving the ability to learn a language.
34.Why does the author mention Don's book
A.To list the popularity of classical music.
B.To prove classical music to be a tool of relaxation.

35.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph

Many of us have heard that it takes 21 days to form a habit in our lifestyle. Unfortunately, a study revealed that the true number is around 66 days, or over 2 months. 36 Here are some key tips to help you make continuous learning a habit in your life.
Start small. Make sure that you can reasonably complete the tasks that you set for yourself. They don't have to be large tasks. It might just be to read one article per day on a particular topic or cook 3 new dishes per week. You are more likely to continue with lifelong learning if you succeed in completing your goals. 37
Change and adjust. If something that you have arranged isn't working for you, you can change it. 38 For example, if you are assigned a task that doesn't seem to be helping you achieve your goals or is too difficult for you, change the task to something that is more suitable.
39 Friends that also participate in lifelong learning can motivate you, create a strong support system and make learning more enjoyable. You can learn new skills together, play games in order to learn or begin a new project as a group.
Make learning a priority. 40 So the desire has to come from within. Once you decide you want to make constant learning a habit, it is up to you to make it a priority in your life. Set learning goals, make a plan, and take action to keep yourself moving.
A.Find jobs that encourage learning.
B.This doesn't mean you should give up.
C.If you fall behind, you may lose motivation.
D.Surround yourself with other lifelong learners.
E.You are in charge of your own learning experience.
F.Few external forces are going to persuade you to learn.
G.So leave the TV, your phone and your dog in a separate room.

It was a bright and sunny morning. Daniel woke up and jumped out of bed, ready for a full day outside. He ran down the stairs and sat down at the kitchen table. His mom was making pancakes: Daniel's favorite. She made pancakes every Saturday morning.
“What do you want to do today ” she asked Daniel.
“I think I'm going to go exploring in our backyard,” he told her. “It's so nice outside!”
Daniel quickly ate up his pancakes and rushed upstairs to get dressed. He put on a red T-shirt and jeans.
“Alright, Mom, I'll be back later!”
“Don't go too far!” she told him.
When he opened the door, Daniel felt a rush of warm air. He smiled at the sun. Perfect hiking weather, he thought. Daniel loved his backyard. There were plenty of tall trees. If he walked far enough, he would reach a lake. When it was really warm outside, he could walk in the water to cool off. The water was always cool.
The leaves were just beginning to grow on the trees after the cold winter. Daniel wandered for a bit. He picked up a long stick and used it to clear a way through the forest.
Suddenly, Daniel saw something in the distance that wasn't a rock or a leaf. When he got closer, he knelt down to investigate. He found a small injured bird between the fallen leaves. He looked around and saw a bird's nest sitting on a branch. He carefully climbed up the trunk of the tree with the nest to get a closer look. The nest was empty, and he didn't see any birds around. Then, he ran back to his house.

M:Are you still working on that city planning project I thought you'd finished it. Honestly, I don't like eating sandwiches day after day. I just can't stand it.
W:You could cook some spaghetti. It would be quick and easy.
M:You are joking, aren't you Do you remember the last time I did the cooking I burnt everything. Where's the phone number for the pizza delivery service
W:Next to the mirror.
(Text 8)
W:Simon, can you imagine I forgot to remind the boss of the important meeting
M:What an awkward mistake! As a secretary, you shouldn't forget to keep the boss informed of all the important schedules.
W:I certainly know it, but this morning I didn't feel very well, so...
M:That's really a silly mistake. Any small mistake may cost our company great losses.
W:I understand what you mean. It makes me look incapable. I'm afraid I will be fired. How can I fix it
M:Apologize to him and give an explanation.
W:I hope our boss will forgive me. I really don't want to lose my job.
M:Relax. I believe he will take your condition into careful consideration.
W:You are so sweet.
(Text 9)
W:Professor Brown, which do you prefer, writing or teacher training
M:Well, I enjoy both very much. In fact, I wouldn't want to give up either. These days most of my time is spent on writing. I go to the university just two half days a week to work with graduate students.
W:What plans do you have for the future
M:Now that we have completed a textbook and its new CD program, we plan to develop more textbooks for other markets. People sometimes say to me, “You work too hard.” The truth is that I enjoy what I do, and I don't consider it to be work.
W:What do you like to do that's not education-related
M:I like playing the piano. I'm fortunate to have been born with the ability to play the piano by ear. If I remember a music piece, I can play it. I'm not sure how I do it, but I've had that ability since the age of twelve. I took music lessons from the age of six. I also write music. Although I'm a language teacher, I can't write words to songs. I have to turn to others for the words. Actually, I have more confidence in my book-writing ability than my song-writing ability.
(Text 10)
M:Leaves are nature's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas called carbon dioxide from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and a kind of sugar. Oxygen is a gas in the air that we need to breathe. Plants use the kind of sugar as food for energy and as a building block for growing.
As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. This is how the trees “know” to begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, the trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the greenness.
The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in the fall. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn cause the leaves to turn this kind of sugar into a red color. The brown color of trees like oaks is made from wastes left in the leaves.
It is the combination of all these things that makes the beautiful fall full of different kinds of colors we enjoy each year.

A.He hesitated to donate his stem cells at first.

D.By improving the ability to learn a language.

A.To list the popularity of classical music.
B.To prove classical music to be a tool of relaxation.
C.To show classical music can improve learning productivity.
D.To show disagreement with previous findings on classical music.

His mom knelt down and looked carefully at it. “Let's try to save it!” she said. She gently picked up the bird and put it in the shoebox. Then she said,“We can take it to the animal hospital in town.”
They took the bird to the animal hospital. After a few days, the vet visited Daniel's house with the bird. It was healed. Daniel and his mom could hear the bird singing when they opened the door. The vet said,“The bird is ready to go back to its home in the trees.” Daniel was so excited. He looked at the bird and said merrily,“I'm going to name you Chirp!”
