Perry was a smart, good kid: shy, modest, and generally unlikely to cause trouble. He was getting straight A's in a challenging and competitive public school honors curriculum. But beneath his academic success, Perry faced a world of troubles, and while it took a while to get to know him, eventually his problems came pouring out.
The problems weren't what I'd expected, though. Perry wasn't being abused by anyone, and his family wasn't always arguing. Rather, at first glance, his problems would seem more like typical adolescent complaints. And they were, in a way.
But it was only as I got to understand him that I realized that Perry's adolescent problems had grown to the point where they cast a large shadow over much of his day-to-day world. And he wasn't alone in that aspect.
One big problem was that while Perry was a strong achiever, he was not at all a happy one.“I hate waking up in the morning, because there's all this stuff I have to do,” he said.“I just keep making lists of things to do and checking them off each day so I can get into a good college.” Once he got started, Perry's discontent spilled out. “There's so much to do, and I have to ... It's just stupid!”
Perry was well loved by his parents. But in their efforts to nurture and support him, his parents increased his mental stress. Over time, they had taken on all his household chores, in order to leave him more time for schoolwork and activities. Perry never really did anything for them except use up their time and money, and he knew it. And if he thought about backing off on his schoolwork ... well, look how much his parents were pouring into making it go well. Trapped between anger and guilt, Perry had begun to wither (消沉).
24.What can we infer about Perry from the text
A.He was completely understood by his parents.
B.He was a perfect young man in every aspect.
C.He often helped his parents with the housework.
D.He was stressed despite his good performance in school.
25.What caused Perry to be in the present state of mind
A.That he had to make lists of things to do every day.
B.That his parents showered him with plenty of selfless love.
C.That he had difficulty achieving remarkable academic success.
D.That he was under great pressure because of his parents' expectations.
26.What did Perry think of himself
A.He did nothing for his parents.
B.His performance made his parents angry.
C.His problem was unusual among his peers.
D.He was gifted enough to enter any university.
27.What is the main purpose of this text
A.To try to explain the reason for Perry's stress.
B.To show a good example of an excellent student.
C.To reflect the concerns of parents of excellent kids.
D.To introduce Perry's life and his family background.
C
As a deep-sea researcher at South Africa's Department of Environmental Affairs, I lead marine (海洋的) research that helps my country to reach its ocean-sustainability goals, especially the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs). MPAs are like national parks, but in the ocean.
To establish MPAs, we need to know what lives in them. I spend about half my time on the ocean, sampling species. Otherwise, I'm analysing data, planning expeditions and advising on the sustainable management of marine resources.
I often stand on the observer platform of our research vessel (大船), the RV Algoa. As an expedition chief scientist, I am responsible for the scientific crew. One area of continuing MPA research is Cape Canyon, off Western Cape. It's a massive undersea system, up to 3 kilometres deep. We survey marine life there as a guide for where to establish MPAs. Our recent study documented seabed-dwelling animals in Cape Canyon, including marine sponges, deep-water corals, a rare sea urchin and an ancient sea star. The canyon head of Cape Canyon has since been made into an MPA.
My tribe, the amaBhaca of the Nguni people, has a strong tie with the ocean that began with our ancient ancestors. We go to the beach every New Year, but just to stand at the water's edge because we think the ocean is a sacred (神圣的) space that we value and respect. Some people in my community viewed my work as disrespectful because I had not remained on the shore. I explained my research and why I do it to my community members—who are now excited by my work.
As a native female researcher who advises the government, I try hard to ensure that communities' views are accurately represented. I address past injustices using ocean sciences as a vehicle for change.
28.What's the main duty of the author
A.Deciding where to build national parks.
B.Preventing MPAs from being destroyed.
C.Helping with sea sustainable development.
D.Managing Department of Environmental Affairs.
29.Why does the author spend much time sampling species
A.She prepares for the building of MPAs.
B.She is devoted to preventing ocean pollution.
C.She longs for adventurous sea expeditions.
D.She is crazy about exploring marine resources.
30.What can we learn about Cape Canyon
A.It's been an MPA for many years.
B.It's the author's observation platform.
C.It's an unfamous tourist destination.
D.It's an area with a huge marine system.
31.Why was the author's work considered disrespectful at first
A.Because the environment was polluted.
B.Because the marine life was overfished.
C.Because she wandered on the beach too long.
D.Because she often went out to sea by vessel.

With more lunar missions than ever on the horizon, the European Space Agency wants to give the moon its own time zone. This week, the agency said space organizations around the world are considering how best to keep time on the moon. The idea came up during a meeting in the Netherlands late last year, with participants agreeing on the urgent need to establish “a common lunar reference time,” said the space agency's Pietro Giordano, a navigation system engineer.“A joint international effort is now being launched towards achieving this,” Giordano said in a statement.
For now, a moon mission runs on the time of the country that is operating the spacecraft. European space officials said an internationally accepted lunar time zone would make it easier for everyone, especially as more countries and even private companies aim for the moon and NASA sets to send astronauts there.
NASA had to solve the time question while designing and building the International Space Station, fast approaching the 25th anniversary of the launch of its first piece. While the space station doesn't have its own time zone, it runs on Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC, which is strictly based on atomic clocks. That helps to split (折中) the time difference between NASA and the Canadian Space Agency, and the other partnering space programs in Russia, Japan and Europe.
The international team looking into lunar time is debating whether a single organization should set and maintain time on the moon, according to the European Space Agency. There are also technical issues to consider. Clocks run faster on the moon than on Earth, gaining about 56 microseconds each day, the space agency said. Furthermore, ticking occurs differently on the lunar surface than in lunar orbit.Perhaps most importantly, lunar time will have to be practical for astronauts there, noted the space agency's Bernhard Hufenbach.
“This will be quite a challenge” with each day lasting as long as 29.5 Earth days, Hufenbach said in a statement. “But having established a working time system for the moon, we can go on to do the same for other planetary destinations.”
32.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Holding a meeting in the Netherlands.
B.Establishing a common lunar reference time.
C.The increase in the number of lunar missions.
D.The 25th anniversary of the International Space Station.
33.Why does the International Space Station use UTC
A.It's the most accurate time system so far.
B.It's the most advanced time system in the world.
C.It's a balanced time system for different space programs.
D.It helps astronauts adapt themselves quickly to life in outer space.
34.What's paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Various issues to consider in establishing lunar time.
B.Debates about when to launch spacecraft to the moon.
C.The great significance of setting and maintaining lunar time.
D.The difference in clock speeds between the moon and Earth.
35.What does Hufenbach think of setting a lunar time system
A.It's a piece of cake. B.It's out of the question.
C.It has far-reaching significance. D.It has infinite commercial value.

What to Consider When Purchasing a Bird Bath
Location: Selecting the location for the bird bath helps in choosing the best one for the area. You want to place it in an area where the birds feel safe. 36 If you use a ground bird bath, place some stones around it so the birds have a place to rest.
Type: 37 The most common types of bird baths are hanging bird baths that can be attached to things like tree branches and poles. They are good choices for smaller areas and are easy to maintain. Ground bird baths are easy to clean and move around. Deck-mounted types are good for small spaces and give you a viewing area that is close up. Wall-mounted bird baths attach to a wall or flat surface. One-piece types are the most popular and come in a wide variety of styles. 38
Height: The height of the bird bath can determine which type of birds will frequently visit. 39 They don't feel as threatened on the ground as smaller birds do. Taller bird baths attract small birds because they have a better view of what's happening around them.
Movement of Water: The majority of bird baths are nothing more than an empty basin filled with water, while some fancier types include options to keep the water moving, including those that are solar-powered. They include features like a bubbler, drippers, misters (弥雾机) and water fountains. Moving water isn't necessary as long as you regularly change the bird bath's water. 40 Water circulation also makes it easier to keep the bird bath clean.
A.Shorter bird baths attract larger birds.
B.A decorative bird bath makes the location stand out.
C.Placing it near trees or bushes offers the birds shelter.
D.However, it does prevent mosquitos from laying eggs.
E.You'll find wild birds visiting to get a breath of fresh air.
F.Pre-selecting the location will help you narrow down the type of bird bath.
G.If you live in a cold climate, you might want to invest in those with a heater.

In a new study, 56 (publish) in the journal Cell, TAU researchers found that the sounds emitted (发出) by plants are click-like, at a volume similar to human speech. 57 , the sounds are emitted at high frequencies of 40 to 80 kHz, beyond the 58 (hear) range of the human ear, and can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, 59 (mouse), and insects. These discoveries may change how people view the plant kingdom, which has been considered to be almost silent until now. It was also found 60 these sounds are mostly emitted when the plant is 61 (stress), and contain information about its condition. Each plant and stress type is associated with a specific 62 (identify) sound.
In their study, the researchers 63 (record) and analyzed sounds made by tomato, tobacco, wheat, corn, cactus, and henbit plants. Machine learning algorithms developed by the team were 64 (ultimate) able to identify the plant from sound recordings and determine the type and level of stress. It was found that unstressed plants emitted less than one sound per hour, on average, 65 dehydrated (脱水的) or injured ones emitted dozens of sounds every hour.

In a small town, there was a high school with a group of students who shared a passion for robotics. The school did not have an official robotics team, but these students were determined to change that. Their dream was to build a competitive robot and participate in the annual national robotics competition. However, they faced several challenges, including a lack of funding, resources, and experience. Despite these obstacles, the students were committed to working together and overcoming the challenges they faced in order to bring their dream to fruition.
The group, composed of students with diverse backgrounds and interests, decided to divide the tasks based on their individual strengths and areas of expertise. Some focused on designing and building the robot, utilizing their skills in engineering and mechanics. Others, who were proficient in programming languages and had a keen interest in software development, worked on programming and controls. Yet others took charge of securing funding and resources for the project by reaching out to local businesses, seeking sponsorships, and organizing fundraising events, such as bake sales, car washes, and community talent shows. The students also sought guidance from their teachers, parents, and other advisors in the community who had experience in engineering, technology, and robotics, attending workshops and lectures to expand their knowledge and hone their skills.
Over the course of several months, the students worked tirelessly on their project, meeting after school and on weekends to cooperate and make progress. As they encountered difficulties, they learned the importance of effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. They quickly discovered that the key to their success was not just in their individual abilities but in their collective strength and determination to work together towards a common goal. Along the way, they also forged strong bonds of friendship, which served to further motivate and inspire them to persevere.

W:Spanish and Italian are similar. If you know some Spanish already, it should be easier for you to pick up Italian.
M:Yeah, I think I'm going to choose Italy. Maybe I'll even stay for a year. I will miss England, but it's a good opportunity. I'll be studying under a famous scientist, too.
W:I wouldn't miss the chance, either. I'm trying to get into a medical program at Oxford right now.
(Text 7)
M:Morning, Mary!
W:Morning. It is pouring outside. How did you get here
M:I took a taxi.
W:How long did it take you
M:Well, about 40 minutes. It's about the same time as I usually ride my motorcycle.
W:Why not try public transportation
M:There is no direct bus from my home to the office, and the nearest subway station is fifteen minutes' walk.
W:Pity you!
M:How about you Do you take public transportation
W:Me, either. I often sleep in. That gives me no other option but to take a taxi for twenty minutes.
M:That saves time but costs a lot. It's time for the meeting. Hurry up!
(Text 8)
M:Hi Mary, why are you selling your exercise bike It looks new, doesn't it
W:Yeah, but I seldom use it. Back home every day, I would rather sit on my sofa, eating cupcakes and watching TV programs.
M:Do you work out after that
W:Oh...that's the last thing I want to do.
M:You'll get on fat if you stay that way.
W:Well, I've put on a few pounds lately. But look at you, the same as ever!
M:I've actually lost some. I remember that you were always very active when you joined our team in the company.
W:Yes, I used to play tennis twice a week.
M:I enjoy jogging, but I can play tennis with you if you like. Let's say today after we finish here at the office I'll book a place in advance.
W:How about tomorrow I have a lot of work to do today.
M:OK. See you then.
(Text 9)
M:Why do you wear a mask over your mouth all the time
W:Don't you smell the smoke in the air today
M:Yes, I do. Isn't that probably from someone's fireplace
W:Jared, the smell is all over this town. Can't you see it in the air, too
M:I thought it was just fog.
W:Wrong again!
M:What Is there a forest fire burning nearby
W:No, it's pretty far away. But it's large, and the smoke from it is covering the whole town. You should stay inside as much as you can. Today, the air quality is at the “dangerous” level.
M:Oh, but I was just going to start my run.Do you have an extra mask
W:I do, but you shouldn't run today, in my opinion. Running makes you breathe harder and faster, so you'll be damaging your lungs more.
M:All right... I'll wait until the air is less dangerous, then. Back to my original question, though... why are you always wearing a mask,Vicki
W:It's not all of the time. But during certain seasons—particularly summer and autumn—pollution gets trapped in this huge valley. So I'm more aware of it.
(Text 10)
W:Good afternoon, everyone. I know that you've just arrived for a few days and you're probably not aware of the problems you may face while studying for your degree. However, it is important that you will go through ups and downs during your stay here. Fortunately, you don't have to go through all these alone. At the school advisory office, we have several experienced advisors to help you with your problems. The office is open Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Saturday 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.
If you need advice on study-related problems, you can make an appointment with Rodney Reid. If you're looking for a part-time job, Jarrod Howard may help you.

One possible version:
A survey of students' health
A recent survey shows that the health of the students in our school has been going from bad to worse during the past year. Near-sighted students has increased from 77% to 93.5%, with overweight students from 38% to 57.2%. Most students don't have enough sleep due to more homework. Besides, mental health is worsening.
It seems to me that the reasons for this lie in heavier learning burden especially more homework, thus making students unable to exercise or sleep well. To solve the problem, we call for less homework. Only in this way can students get plenty of sleep and be healthier. Proper diets and exercise should also be paid attention to so that they won't easily put on weight.
第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One possible version:
As the competition approached, the team faced some difficulties. The robot's initial design had faults that caused breakdowns during testing, and the students struggled to fix the issues. Time was running out, and the team members felt overwhelmed. However, they supported one another and worked together to find solutions. They communicated openly about the challenges, shared ideas, and used the expertise of advisors and fellow students to improve the robot's design.
In the end, the team's hard work and cooperation paid off. They fixed the robot's issues, and the finished product exceeded expectations. The students represented their school at the national competition, demonstrating teamwork, problem-solving skills, and creativity. Though they did not win, the experience brought them closer together and taught valuable lessons about cooperation and perseverance. Their inspiring story spread throughout the school and community, encouraging others to work together to achieve their dreams and proving that when people join forces and support one another, they can overcome any obstacle.
