A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day.How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m.The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast.Jeff broke two cggs into a plate and added in some milk.Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture.Next,Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan.Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds.Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire.Jenna panicked. Thankfully,Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now.Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

【2017浙江 ·旅行途中遇狼】
On a bright, warm July afternoon,Mac Hollan,a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with
his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on,and they would catch up with him soon.As Mac pedaled( 骑 行 ) along alone,he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him."Man,that's a big dog!"he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all,but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars,he fired the spray at the wolf.A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief,it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later,it was by his side again.
Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag.He fired at the wolf a second time, and again,it fell back only to quickly restart the chase.
Mac was pedaling hard now.He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slowdown. He saw a steep
uphill limb before him.He knew that once he hit the hill,he'd be easy caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment,Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bikes on the side of the road.A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike.As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf.Mac heard a large vehicle behind him.He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.
The car abruptly stopped in front of him.
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived.
