Finding an unexpected friend
I loved everything about school except for one person: Mildred.
Every day, as we walked home after school, she would step on the backs of my shoes. Then, when I stopped to adjust my shoes, Mildred would slap (拍打) my back. She scared me.
Soon, my mother figured something was wrong. I told her the whole story. My mom told me not to worry and said she had a plan.
The next morning, my mom walked up the hill with me. Just as we got to the top of the hill, we saw Mildred.
“Hello, Mildred,” my mom said quietly. Mildred stopped, standing as still as a statue (雕像). Her hands and face were bright red. Her oversized coat hung open. There were only two buttons (纽扣) on it.
My mother didn’t say anything at first. Instead, she buttoned up Mildred’s coat and turned the collar up around her neck.
“I’m Marion’s mother. I need your help, Mildred.” My mother’s hands held Mildred’s as she spoke. “Marion doesn’t have any brothers or sisters. She needs a best friend at school, someone to walk up the hill with her after classes are over. Would you be Marion’s friend, Mildred ”
Mildred chewed (咀嚼) on her bottom lip and nodded. “Oh, thank you!” my mother said. “I just know you are someone I can depend on.” Then she hugged us and left as though nothing unusual had happened.
Mildred and I walked on to school. As I looked over at her, I saw that Mildred was smiling! I’d never seen her smile before.
We walked up the hill each day after school together and pretty soon we became best friends.
I didn’t understand my mom’s plan at the time. But eventually, I came to understand her message: Love never fails.

Library prisoner reads literature
David walked down the street. The sun was setting. All he wanted to do was to play basketball with Jim. But his mother told him to first return his sister’s books to the library on the way to Jim’s house.
In his mind, books and summertime just don’t go together. He thought he had read a lot during the school year. But he had never set foot inside a public library. He planned to just leave the books in the return box outside the door, but it was locked. So he had to go inside to return them.
David walked inside the building a few minutes before the closing time. He put the books into the return box. After a quick drink of water and a short stop in the restroom, he would be on his way to meet Jim. He walked out of the restroom. The library lights were turned off. He was locked — in a library.
David tried to use the telephone, but he couldn’t find one. He searched for a light and found a little lamp on the desk. He used a pencil to write a note on a large piece of paper. It read, “I’m locked inside. Please call for help!” He taped (用胶带粘住) it to the glass window on the front door. Surely, someone passing by would see it. He then turned his attention to the library itself.
He was surprised to discover that this place was not so bad. Rows and rows of books! When he saw a book about Michael Jordan on a desk, he picked it up and began to read. Then something unexpected happened. For a moment, David felt that being locked in the library didn’t seem to be such a terrible thing.

Not too poor to care for others
She used to sleep on the sidewalk (人行道) of the Fifth Street Post Office. I could smell her before I came close. She wore dirty clothes and her mouth was nearly toothless. I rarely saw her talk with others. If she was not asleep, she talked to herself. I always had sympathy for her. What a poor old lady! She must be desperate (感到绝望的) and hungry.
One Thanksgiving, we had lots of food left over. I thought about the old lady. She might be still hungry. So I packed the food up and drove over to the Fifth Street.
It was a cold night. There was hardly anyone out. But I knew she would stay at the same place and I would find her easily.
There she was, squatted (蹲着) against a fence (篱笆) near the post office. She was dressed as she always was.
I drove my car over to her, rolled down the window and said, “I’ve brought you some food. Would you like some turkey (火鸡) and apple pie ”
However, the old woman didn’t seem to be very excited about this. She looked at me and said quite clearly, “Oh, thank you very much, but someone have given me food earlier and I’m quite full now. Why don’t you take it to someone else who needs it ”
Her words were clear and her manners were gracious (亲切的). Soon her head sank into her arms again. I was the only person who didn’t know what to say. An old lady who was clearly down on her luck still thought about others.
