Unit 3 The World Meets China
Starting out
Textbook Analysis:
This course is part of the Optional Compulsory Volume 4 of the Foreign Study Edition(2019)and is the sixth unit of the volume.The text mainly focuses on China's cultural tradition,modernization process and international influence,and uses highly difficult vocabulary and sentence patterns throughout the text,reflecting the exchange and collision between Chinese and Western cultures.
Objective: Through this lesson,students should be able to master the following aspects of knowledge and skills:
1.Understand China's traditional culture and modernization process; 2.Master the keywords and expressions in the text;
3.Able to describe the cultural characteristics and modern images of China;
4.Cultivate students'intercultural communication ability and critical thinking.
Teaching focus:key words and expressions in the text,Chinese traditional culture and modernization process.
Teaching difficulties: Students'understanding of Chinese culture and description of modern Chinese images.
Analysis of learning situation: Students are senior two students with a good English foundation,but their understanding of Chinese culture is limited,usually limited to some relevant knowledge of traditional culture.Therefore,it is necessary to help students form an open international outlook and cross-cultural communication ability through the study of this lesson.
Teaching strategy: Interactive teaching methods such as multimedia display,group discussion and cooperative learning are adopted to stimulate students'learning interest and participation.
Teaching methods: Based on task-based teaching,on the basis of independent learning,students are guided to carry out theme display, role play and communication and discussion,so as to cultivate students'

comprehensive language application ability.
Introduction (about 5 minutes):
Teaching content:Introduce topics to stimulate students'learning interest and thinking ability.
1.Show a map of China and ask students to observe and answer questions about China's location and border countries.
Teaching activities:Students look at a map and answer the following questions:
-What are most of the border countries of China -In what part of Asia is China located
-With which countries does China share land borders -Where is China next to Russia
Teachers can guide students to answer by asking questions,and give appropriate guidance and correction to students'answers.
2.Guide students to think about "China's impact on the world".
Teaching activities:Teachers guide students to think about the following

questions by asking questions:
-In what ways does China influence the world -Can you give me an example
-How do you think learning about China has helped you
Classroom interaction(approx.35 minutes):
Content:Explore China's influence on culture,economy,science and technology through group cooperation and discussion.
1.Group activities:Students will be divided into groups to discuss the influence of China's culture,economy,science and technology.
Teaching activities:Each group selected an aspect,collected information and discussed it,and made a poster or PPT to show the influence of China on this aspect.Students can discuss with each other,gather information,share ideas,and present them in class.
2.Share and discuss:Each group presents its own results,and comments and questions on other groups'presentations.
Teaching activities:Each group sent representatives to present their

posters or PPT,and the other groups listened and asked questions. Students can share their own research results,opinions and feelings, and promote the collision of ideas and in-depth inquiry through mutual comments and questions.
End session(approx.5 minutes):
Teaching content:Summarize the learning content of this lesson and stimulate students'thinking.
1.Summary discussion:Students review the learning process together and summarize the key points and gains of this lesson.
Teaching activities:Teachers guide students to answer the following questions and discuss:
-What did you learn from the poster or powerpoint process
-Do you have a new understanding of China's impact on the world
-How do you think and understand your country through today's study
2.Stimulate thinking:Students think and envision China's impact on the
world.

Teaching activities:Teachers put forward open questions and guide students to think and discuss:
-In what other ways do you think China will influence the world in the future
-What can your country learn from China's experience
Through the above teaching process,students will engage in interactive learning through various forms such as map observation,problem thinking,group cooperation,presentation and speech,so as to understand China's impact on the world,and cultivate critical thinking, cooperation and expression skills.At the same time,through the summary and reflection at the end of the session,students can be guided to further deepen their understanding of China and the world on the basis of thinking.
Teaching reflection:
The teaching theme of this lesson is "Global Witness China".In this lesson,I introduce China's long history and rich culture,so that students can understand the situation of China's opening to the outside world

and the reasons why foreigners come to China to learn Chinese language and Chinese culture.
In the process of teaching,I found that the students were very interested in Chinese culture and full of enthusiasm for learning Chinese. They are curious about traditional Chinese culture,tea culture and martial arts.Therefore,I have included some pictures,videos and interactive activities in the class to make students understand and experience Chinese culture more vividly.
However,I also met some problems in teaching.First of all,due to time constraints,I did not have enough time to explain the details of Chinese culture in depth,which made it relatively easy for students to understand.Secondly,due to the uneven English level of the students, some words and sentences were difficult for them,and I did not give them enough help and explanation.Finally,my teaching method relies too much on books and lacks sufficient multimedia resources and interactive activities,resulting in students'low interest and participation in learning.
In order to improve the teaching,I plan to add more interactive activities

in the next teaching,such as showing objects or pictures,so that students can have a more intuitive understanding of Chinese culture.At the same time,I will also give more guidance and explanations according to the students'English level to ensure that each student can understand the class content.I will also actively use multimedia resources,such as video and audio,to enrich classroom teaching and increase students'interest in learning.
Summarizing the teaching experience,I realized that in teaching,apart from letting students understand cultural knowledge,it is also necessary to pay attention to their learning motivation and difficulties in the learning process.Through rational use of a variety of teaching resources, provide intuitive display and rich interactive activities,can better stimulate students'interest in learning and enthusiasm.
